It's good that this was never in the game. As in the actual version, Reznov is more caring for his comrades death. It's a lot better than finishing someone he has known for long, and gesture of taking the diary also meant a lot to Chernov, as it showed that Reznov cared about him.

I think both turnouts are good but I have to admit that you (or reznov) shooting Chernov was much more merciful as he was suffering. The final version we all just left him while he is slowly dying a painful death.

I think the only reason they changed it was for Chernov's diary. The game wasn't afraid of being "too dark." The final version also conveys that Reznov cared about Chernov, despite being hard on him. This version makes Reznov seem heartless toward Chernov.

In all seriousness, I'm glad Treyarch didn't go through this scenario, because I like the current Reznov's character, him deeply caring about his men while being tough on them. (Love his deep suppress emotion when he took Chernov's journal so someone could read it)

i think the developers over-researched their source material. I am confident that they also watched that controversial Russian series called "Shtrafbat" aka Penal Battalion. Its the same as band of brothers series, and there is that one particular scene where Antip Glymov coup de grace his own dying comrade and was also forced to shoot his own best friend in front of the whole battalion.
