World worst plane by such a inovative past of A V Roe , so wish the the goverment then had got rid of the gr4 plan years before they did. Poor plane built on a realy brillant concept and great name of the Nimrod of the past. Shame it cost so much and most people will never know the reality of its departure.

I so miss Woodford Airport. My friends and I riding our bikes there from our homes Bramhall to watch the Vulcans taking off and landing. Wonderful site. Now most of it is being developed into a bloody housing estate. Shame. Always thought it could have been developed into Manchester's second airport rather than the drastic expanding of Ringway especially as now they've finally built the bypass from High Lane to Ringway Road it would have took barely 10 minutes to drive between the two.

Scrapping the Nimrod MRA4 is the worst decision the UK government has ever made.

Typical of the UK! Always on the cusp of great success - only to be doomed by inept politics and an inability to spend the tax payers money wisely. Why not build a conveyor belt from the Royal Mint straight into a black hole! That could be successful! Great movie!

While I was disappointed when the MRA4 was scrapped, it should never have got off the drawing board in the first place. The aircraft it was based on was already a dinosaur in the early 70s, when the MR1 was entering service. When the MR2 was approaching retirement, it should have been replaced by an all new design. We could have partnered with Japan on their Kawasaki P1 program. The Nimrod, based on the Comet 4, should never have been considered for such an extensive modification program to create the MRA4, 50 - 60 years after the Comet was designed, using fuselages built in the late 60s.

An aircraft design & production facility with this capacity now lost because of Labour screwing the project and Cameron's shortsightedness. And now we can't even track Russian subs off our coast. Great, our country is being run by jerks.

In the right hand corner at about 1:28 there's what appears to be a small out of focus flock of birds.

I watched PA5 arrive at Woodford as an MR2 in November 1999. She was the first aircraft I worked on during my time there. Subsequently worked on PA1, 2 & 3 before leaving the UK to move to New Zealand. Biggest moment for me was the flight of PA1. If people realised the amount of work that went into getting the MRA4 airborne, it would never have been scrapped. Tory lunatics!

as RAF we were surprised at the day we got told its gone, up until D-Day we thought it would be safe , thats at least what we were told, But afterwords it was head of BAE that cancelled it, dfirectly to PM. The Army and RAF and NAVY all wanted it . Before the cancellation it was the Friday before the Pm took advice from BAE, it was all a go but politics we all know.

You seem to like calling David Cameron a cunt. For some of us the real 'cunt' was Gordon Brown who fucked up our economy big time and left us in a situation where (as Liam Byrne noted) "There is no money left". So, given the £35 Billion black hole Labour left in the Defence Budget (ie kit ordered and no funding for it), how would YOU have sorted it Mr bloody Know All? Nimrod was years late and billions over budget and should have been stopped years earlier. And I speak as ex RAF mate.

It should never have been considered as a viable option for replacement of the MR2. It was a massive turd-polishing exercise, based on the flawed assumption that modifying an existing design would be cheaper & easier than creating a new one. In some cases, that's most certainly true. With MRA4 however, the extent of the new-build (around 80% of the total aircraft) was enormous and therefore very expensive on it's own, while the condition of the remaining structure was atrocious, with so many redundant features, so many modifications needed, so much corrosion damage to repair & so many integration problems - that an all-new design would have been so much easier to produce, but would require more extensive certification. This whole farce was the result of poor procurement policies, and a stupid idea that was promoted by the default winner of the MR2 replacement competition, in order to circumvent them. I spent over 4 years on MRA4 & I'm actually glad it didn't enter service.

I was told that it was full design faults & would of cost a further £1bn at least to correct them.
