How gravel is helping ? filtering the water ?

It is an aquaponics grow bed. The gravel is both where the plants live and where the bacteria live that convert waste from fish tanks into plant nutrients. The plants then can remove the waste as they grow and produce food you can eat. Fish get clean water and plants get nutrients!

Thanks! I wish id made it less level to add a tilt to the hives. Water retention was an issue during winter...
