You are correct. I have worked on hundreds of HOHNER reed plates and can report that sometimes a HOHNER Technician would be a tad more aggressive <0.025mm with setting the Z-Point

Hello Mr. Pollard, thank you very much for your Video: I had problems to do overblows on channel 4 to 6 on an new rocket amp in C, but with your advisement I could adjust the reeds to do their job! Another comment I want to give is (please forgiveme for my bad english: I am german and out of expericence for a long time), that the zero-points in this rocket amp are much tighter than the 0.025mm you announced - am I correct? Have a nice day and happy harping: your skills in mechanics and playing are so great, thank you.

I’m pleased you found my training videos useful. You are correct-from the factory, depending on the worker, sometimes the Z-Point will be below 0.025mm (null 0.000mm)

Swapping cover plates is a golden advice! The sound of the harmonica changes dramaticly! I bought a Hering chromatic harmonica (years ago), the so called Velvet Voice. A fine instrument, but FAR from Velvet; it sounds like a trumpet 😞 Today I swapped the cover plates (which were nearly completely closed) with old cover plates of a Hohner Toots Thielemans Mellow Tone harmonica (just normal, regular open plates!). The improvement in sound is unbelieveable; just by changing the acoustics of the instrument. After years of not using the Hering Velvet Voice (I hated the sound!), I have a completely new harmonica. Not the velvet, sweet sound of a mellow tone (Hohner), but more like the Hard Bopper; but for me a great improvement. Thanks for this informative video!

EXCELLENT! I'm pleased to learn your retrofit project was a huge success. Well done my Brotha. Originally fabricated by harmonica manufacturers as a shield to protect the reeds, Jacob Hohner (Mattias's Son) discovered that designing the curvature of the Marine Band 1896 cover plates, not only looked terrific but had a profound impact on shaping the sound.

What about the Thunderbird?
@HARPSMITH900Ай бұрын
The HOHNER Marine Band Crossover Thunderbird features the Joe Filisko DRAW Cover Plate. Distinctly different than it's cousins, the "bulbous" drop on it's left side/lower octave enhances the lower partials with the increased tone chamber. In addition, to sealing better in the typical left hand holding style (between the thumb and index finger), it also mitigates the typical click & clack of the #1 Reed hitting the cover plate as it swings wide and low.

Great Class Kenya, good to see different tools. I like to use manicure rotary machine as well as they are very weak and take very little from the reeds. kudos from Brazil (Home of Hering!) .

@HARPSMITH9002 ай бұрын
Thanx for watching! A terrific BLUZ Harmonica "starting" point for both the BLOW/DRAW will be the following: .007" for Reeds 1,2 .006" for Reeds 3,4 .005" for Reeds 5,6 .004" for Reeds 7,8 .003" for Reeds 9 .002" for Reeds 10

Well here I am.... again 🫣🫣 it's after 2am across the pond !! This is soooo interesting and that 1896 Marine Band is Beautiful & sounds sooo sweet. I laughed when you said CNC(Computer Numerical Control)....my father was an engineer, he came home one day from work and announced to my mum and us kid's......"Well that's the end for us Engineers. I watched a demonstration of a CNC Machine that takes away the need for us old Engineers" . Then the Apprenticeships were cut from 5 years to 3 years. You used to be able to be a Fitter/Turner , that was now impossible with the 3 year Apprenticeship, so now your either a Fitter or a Turner. Technology & advancement has good & bad , ying & yang like all things. I digress, great work on the 1896 and perhaps I'll look into purchasing a Harp Smith 1896 Harp. Thank you 🏴👍👏👏😁

@cincinnatipedalsteel43475 ай бұрын
Can you tell me what size screws hold the tees plates onto the comb? I only have 5 holding my tees plates on my special 20 so I need another. Also can you recommend sometimes I can send my harp to and have them set it up for overflows and to gap all the reeds properly? I had a bit too much confidence in my abilities and even though it plays, I can tell some of the notes dont bend properly and don’t play as well as others.
