I've got a 98 LS model with 49500 miles on the clock, still looks like new.since your car is 24 years old you might want to change transmission fluid and filter if it's never been done. Had mine done shortly after I bought it. Just a suggestion. Nice car. Hold on to it there's not many left in this good of condition!!

I am a recently retired mechanic. I have been driving Ford Panther cars for over 30 years. I bought a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 11 years ago, with 97,000 miles on it. It now has 381,000 miles on it and still runs like new. I've had to spend less than $1000 on actual repair parts since I've had it. But nothing lasts forever, and I was worried what I might get stuck with when my 2006 started having serious issues. So about 6 months ago, I bought a 2007 Grand Marquis LS, in like new condition, from the original owners, an older couple living in a retirement community, which came with a stack of service receipts. It had 36,000 miles on it. I gave it a thorough going over, the only thing I found wrong is that it needed windshield wipers. I paid $10,000 for it. Considering what a new piece of junk car costs, I would likely have paid twice that much. These are 400,000+ mile cars. it's about the same color as that one. My 2006 was white, but half the paint peeled off. That is only a problem with white paint. Beware of that. I prefer the 2003 and newer models, because some significant improvements were made that year. But they are all great cars. They use mostly 1990s technology, they are easy to work on, parts are cheap and plentiful. They are super comfortable, and will get 30+ mph on the highway with the 2.73 rear axle. They have a 400 mile range with a full tank. That6 is not aluminum trim on the side, it's silver colored plastic. The AZ sun turned mine brown on the 2006. I may have it covered with vinyl wrap by a sign shop to protect it on my 2007. There are a few things that tend to go wrong with these cars, only one of them is serious, and only if you live in a cold climate. In the rear, the air suspension will eventually fail. The airbags rotted out on my 2006. I replaced them with coil springs. Permanent fix, around $200, couldn't tell any difference in the ride. The power window regulators will eventually fail. They do in all cars. Only the drivers door window failed on mine. New one was under $100, old one that broke still had the factory rivets in it, so it lasted a long time. The plastic intake manifold can warp and start to leak coolant. They are fairly easy to replace. These are single overhead cam engines, and the timing components eventually wear out. There are 2 chains, 4 sprockets, 2 tensioners, and 4 guides. So far my 2006 with 381,000 miles still has the originals. I constantly listen for cam chain rattle, but haven't heard anything yet. How long these parts last depends on how well the engine is maintained. I change my oil every 3,000 miles. The biggest and most expensive issue with these cars is the blend door actuator in the automatic climate control system. It is what controls the temperature of the air, by mixing warm and cold air. It has a little 12V motor and really cheap plastic gears in it that will fail, and mine did. Replacing it means removing the dash, something I would not try to do. VERY expensive job at a shop, close to $2000. I live in Phoenix, AZ, where I don't need heat, but have to have A/C. So I rigged mine for A/C only. If that is not an option, it could get expensive.

This comment is mint. I just picked up a 97 Marquis in Ivory tan with a vinyl top and am in AZ myself. Any tips for making sure the vinyl top won't fade? The color of my car is literally like a pudding cream tan color.

What shocks me about these Panthers is how little the “outside world” has heard about them. What do I mean? A good solid reliable car is a Toyota or Honda- period. Don’t get me wrong- they are as reliable and solid as a rock- but I see the Panthers as being in the same league and not getting the recognition it deserves.

@@PMSPauline Even if a Toyota or Honda could last over 400,000 miles, they are dinky little front wheel drive cars. The Panther cars, especially the Grand Marquis, is a large, V8 powered rear wheel drive luxury car. And they are not the gas guzzlers most people think they are.

@@geraldscott4302 My father was hooked on the Mercury Marquis and I know all about the comfort the way it drove. The Marquis, Crown Vic, and Continental were undervalued bigtime. Up until 2-3 years ago they traded at a discount while the Camry’s traded at a premium. Totally illogical but Japanese cars were always seen as the best. I’m in your camp and happy these cars are getting the respect they deserve.
