Hands down...Kitty "Martin" Mitchell... is the GODMOTHER... of all Ocracoke artistic disciplines. It all started from the time she opened the doors to her studio/gallery at the Variety Store in 1979.

Thanks so much for doing this, Gary. I love Ocracoke. Enjoyed the Ocrafolk Festival for over 10 years & all the great performers that you brought to my attention. Arthritis has closed that chapter of my life for now, but listening to your show is such a treat.

Ocracoke remains a very special place to this day....My family originated on Portsmouth and Ocracoke but due to the sometimes difficult travel to get there I have visited few times....But, because of this remoteness, it has remained one of the few places in the USA least changed...Note the still, english accent of the old-timers....Duke University has studied in recent times their remaining accent..which thankfully remains in the locals to this day because of their remote location. I am not an authority but only attempting to relay my small bit of knowledge...They are awesome people! Seldom traveling to other remote areas, again because of the travel and difficulty in getting to and from their location....Watching this makes me aware of the beautiful and simple ways that do remain there to this day. While visiting the OBX plan a day trip over to visit this unique and beautiful island...where olden ways still remain...Note that their homes are mostly elevated...this protects them from frequent hits by hurricanes...They are so strong and their love of this place has seen them recover time after time from direct hits by hurricanes....This video reveals a tad of their accent and local love of this awesome place and their love for it.....
