I coach youth. The biggest pet peeve I have is when players turn up before a session or game, stick a ball down outside the box, and just smash it at the goal. They want to shoot and you can't stop it, so I stick cones down. They have to at least dribble past a stationary object first to get some sense of game realism.

This is why I use the Joner Football App every day when training my girls. I’ve now used it for 13 months. The training doesn’t need to be flashy … it just needs to be consistent, purposeful & with intensity. Thanks Lee!!

I've been coaching since 2000. The sweeper system was still being used(crazy). I'm seeing so many new coaches teaching young players the hot new trends. But those trends DO NOT translate to the field. I only train fundamentals. Because I feel a player can pick up fancy play with time and experience.

Henry - they're all in the box. Emphasising the 6 to 12 yards comment from Rooney and Sturridge earlier.

We largely agree, Lee. Interestingly on the first part of your video, there is a great interview out there with René Meulensteen, and he discusses how he took a young Ronaldo at United and explained to him that (Ronaldo) needed to learn EVERY type of finish, so that in a game he could recall the correct muscle memories. He also suggested that sets of four work at match pace. Sturridge said 5-7 in your video. René Meulensteen believes four work. Thus, we believe when training a player if you want to increase their match speed then doing four reps then stopping is the key. Anything above that is probably endurance territory. Not too sure on the Henry remarks, though. If you notice in all of his goals how static the keeper is. We believe modern strikers are actually a response to a genuine increase in the training and improvement of keepers. Take Alison for example at Liverpool. If a modern day Henry was 1 v 1 with him, we all know Alison is rushing out and calmly making himself "large" blocking that side footed shot (like he has many times). Therefore, our best guess is a modern day Henry would probably have to side-step a top keeper before side footing it in. Great video! Thank you for raising it.

You’re saying a modern day Henry wouldn’t score past the keepers now ? 🤣 of course he would. Most of his goals were always away from the keeper regardless of how well spread they are. In terms of training the wrong way I am on about players just hitting free kicks and shots outside the box all the time which is what we see on social media . Did you watch the full video?
@FootandBallAcademy3 сағат бұрын
@@JonerFootball Thanks for your detailed response and feedback. It's an excellent overarching point about the trick shots and just hitting free kicks outside the box. We did watch your whole video and hope we interpreted it correctly (?) Our first point was in regards to what Sturridge said inside your video, about the 5 - 7 reps at match speed each day. We pointed out that Rene believes it was four (or sets of four). We also cited an example in support of your Rooney-Sturridge video about Rene and Ronaldo at United. Where Rene showed Ronaldo a video of all his first season goals and explained they all look too similar. Rene argued training should encompass a wider variety of all kinds of shots and goals to account for all the different possibilities in a game. This, also, being in wider support of your video's overarching argument about only doing trick/long shots, limiting an attackers development. As for the Henry remark, it's probably contrarian and controversial but we do agree that a modern-day Henry would still be prolific, and side foot his shots, placing them in bottom corners but GUESS he may also need to account for the array of top modern-day keepers and how they rush out to close the down the space and angles, limiting the side footed option. This MIGHT express itself as an additional side-step or skill to the side of a keeper just before the side pass into the goal. The way keepers defend 1 v 1's and close those bottom corner angles in this era can be top draw when executed well.

Spot on. I always tell my attacking players low and hard and aim for the inside netting. Top corner looks sexy, but every goal is worth the same, so the most important thing is to make sure you score

You’re so spot on. In our training session I call them TicTok shots when the lads are shooting high going for TC. I remind them that no one has ever missed under the goal, aim low. Social media has a lot to answer for in terms of behaviour, skill and mentality of young players.

Oh I’m a U11 coach 9v9 level. In Norwich. Thanks for the great free content Lee. I’m banging my head against a wall trying to get the dinosaurs that run our club to invest in training gear including app subscriptions for all our coaches. A lot of them still coach like a 1980’s PE lesson! We need to move coaching forwards in England. They still think a Rondo is a Brazilian striker!!

At the end they play 1 in 1 do not use any fint , and of course loose the ball all the time and the coach do not tell anything , just say: Good... what is good there, I do not understand this. I would ask the questions, why they do not use any fint? How they want to but the opponent without using any fint?? Thanks
