Is it suitable for preparing aluminum composite (acm) pannels? Thanks
@MHPaints
@MHPaints Ай бұрын
Hi! Thank you for your comment. Michael Harding NAAP (Non-Absorbent Acrylic Primer) is designed to be an excellent surface preparation product for a variety of non-absorbent surfaces, including metals. It could be suitable for aluminum composite material (ACM) panels as they typically have a smooth, non-porous surface, which aligns with the primer’s intended use. However, it’s important to ensure that the surface is properly cleaned and abraded if necessary, as aluminum composites often have a slick surface that may require sanding to promote adhesion. Checking for compatibility with the specific type of ACM panel you’re using is advisable as well. Some ACM panels may have protective coatings or other treatments that could affect how well the primer adheres. It would be best to test a small area first to ensure the primer adheres well and provides the desired results. Happy painting!

I have prepared some MDF panels with a thin layer of GAC 100 and am now ready to prime. I’m wondering - do I need to apply gesso under NAAP? Or can I go straight in with the white NAAP and start painting? I usually do an underpainting in acrylic as well- can I do this with acrylic paints over the NAAP and then add the oil? (Or use the NAAP mixed with other coloured acrylics for the underpainting?) I don’t have the £ to buy your coloured primers (I wish). Thanks!
@MHPaints
@MHPaints 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question and for using our products. You can go straight in with the Michael Harding Non-Absorbent Acrylic Primer (NAAP) without needing to apply gesso first. Our NAAP is designed to create an excellent ground for oil paints, so there's no need for an additional gesso layer. For your underpainting, you can indeed use acrylics over the NAAP and then proceed with oils. However, it's important not to mix NAAP with other coloured acrylics. Instead, complete your underpainting with acrylics on top of the fully dried NAAP layer. This will ensure the best adhesion and durability for your painting. We understand the budget constraints regarding coloured primers. A practical tip is to tint your initial layer of NAAP with a small amount of acrylic paint to achieve a coloured ground, which can be a cost-effective alternative. I hope this helps, and happy painting!

Very interesting. How does painting over this compare to oil primers? And does it contain any tooth?
@MHPaints
@MHPaints 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for your interest in our Non-Absorbent Acrylic Primer (NAAP). When comparing painting over NAAP to traditional oil primers, you'll find that NAAP offers a different working experience. NAAP creates a non-absorbent, slick surface which can be quite different from the more absorbent, matte surface that traditional oil primers provide. This non-absorbent quality means that your oil paints will sit on top of the surface longer, allowing for more manipulation and blending time. Regarding tooth, NAAP does contain a subtle texture, but it's generally less pronounced than what you would find with some oil primers. The tooth of NAAP is designed to provide just enough grip for your paint layers to adhere well without being overly textured. I hope this clarifies your questions! If you have any more inquiries, feel free to reach out.

I really wanted to like this product. It produces a surface that I like working on. The paint doesn't sink in initially but there is considerable sinking in over days and weeks. I have tried using medium to improve the surface for reworking but that is not the answer. I don't usually varnish my paintings but this may be necessary. Oil primer is preferred.

@MHPaints
@MHPaints Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you're excited about using our product! Yes, you can mix acrylic colored paint into the primer to create a ground tone. However, I would recommend being cautious about diluting the primer too much, as excessive dilution can impact its performance. If you decide to mix in acrylic coloured paint, start with small amounts and gradually add more until you achieve the desired tone without compromising the consistency of the primer. Feel free to experiment and find the approach that best suits your artistic vision. If you have any more questions or if there's anything else we can assist you with, don't hesitate to reach out.

NAAP may be applied to linen, wood, MDF, and other supports to produce a strong, flexible, permanent, and highly pigmented ground. It’s suitable as a ground for both acrylic and oil paint. Do not apply over rabbit skin/hide glue or to unsound, flimsy supports such as cardboard. Note this is a primer, not a gesso. Gessoes, sizes, or other ancillary products are unnecessary alongside NAAP.

@@carolinebeaudoin92 You may apply NAAP to both sides of the birch panel. This ensures uniformity and stability without the risk of warping. I would not use a Multi-Purpose Acrylic Polymer sealer that was glossy, or PVA product in preparatory layer of an oil painting including Gac 100, Gac 200. Good luck with your painting endeavours, and enjoy exploring our lovely Pozzuoli red earth colour! Best wishes, Joelle Harding

Do you recommend sizing raw linen before applying MH Non absorbent Ground?
@brchtklmn
@brchtklmn Жыл бұрын
MH doesn't recommend using rabbit skin-glue. So in that case: no. A size can have two (or three) purposes. A size prevents the oil coming from into contact with your linen (strike through). But any acrylic ground (like this one) does that job. Another purpose of a size is to make your linen stiffer. RSG used to perform this task, and there are a few other sizes that do the job as well. Of course, applying more coats of acrylic ground also makes your linnen stiffer. And then there is a 3rd purpose, which is to block SID (Support Induced Discoloration), but this is only useful when you paint your entire painting in acrylics.
