Yes, they need to be anchored and secured so the wind can’t blow them over. For additional questions, you can reach out to us at [email protected]. Thanks!

I’m not an HVAC professional, but I enjoyed your video. Very informative. I have a question regarding return air in a zoned system. You mentioned that dedicated return ducts are necessary. My questions is, do these return ducts need dampers as well as the supply? If all of there returns are connected to the air handler, wouldn’t the unit be pulling air from every zone and not just those calling for air? Like I said, I know nothing about hvac systems so the answer may be obvious to those who do. Thanks!

While each zone will have a small amount of return air pulled from it when one zone is calling, the majority will come form the zone that is getting air due to the fact that if you put air into a zone and equal amount of air will have to leave that zone be that either through a dedicated return which is actively removing air (preferred) or through “sympathetic” leakage of air into other zones through then home and then getting pulled back to the air handler to be conditioned. Either way if you put air into a zone air will have to leave that zone. If you have a dedicated return, it prevents crossover of the conditioned air leaving the zone and leaking into others. Return dampers can be useful in cases where zones are a long distance from the air handling unit but in most cases simply having a dedicated return(s) is sufficient and more cost effective. This is of course all predicated on each zone having adequate return duct work to be able to handle the full amount of air that is being supplied to the zone. Since the recording of this presentation, I have installed zoning in my own home using the dedicated return method and after extensive testing using extreme temperature differences between zones I notice little to no crossover of conditioned air into other zones all without return dampers.

Fun fact: ECM in the automotive trade is always Engine Control Module. It's usually associated with the main computer of the vehicle. Since in HVAC we associate ECM with Electronically Commutated Motor, it seems to me they made a mistake in labelling it Engine Control Module when it clearly controls the ECM motor. I'll bet on that.
