Your mast rotator lever is centred, ease it out to 30-45degrees off centreline to get more power in the mainsail. You only want it centred like you have it in this video when it's really blowing & you want to depower the main. Lovely boat, I don't think Mark sold plans for it?
@RusinVanDyke
@RusinVanDyke 3 ай бұрын
Hi Steven, it is my understanding that the mast should be set such that it is parallel to the wind. There is no standard degree setting. It is based on current wind speed and direction (apparent, not true) based on boat speed. You want the mast to direct the wind onto the sail in a non-disruptive fashion, not to act as a forward flap/slat such as on an airplane. This was my first time sailing the boat and I may have had the mast rotation set too tight on this initial outing. Thanks for your thoughtful input and please direct me to an educational resource if my understanding is incorrect. I am assuming that too much angle on the mast would cause wind disruption on the windward side of the sail and potentially lead to luffing due to the decreased pressure at the windward luff of the main. In any case, the leach tell tails were streaming nicely. I have simple plans from Mark if you get me your email. I have thought about selling the boat but haven't listed it yet. I have too much stuff. Rus

Also, apparent wind higher on the mast will be more forward than lower on the mast.

Hello Glenn, the mast was also built by Mark. I tried some of the links that showed its' construction, but they no longer appear to work. I will have a maintenance/repair video uploaded in a few months that will show some mast details. It is primarily ply, wood blocking, foam, and glass, with a slotted tube for the sail track. Well made and light. Here are some links that might help you with finding the photos of the mast build: smalltrimaran.co.uk/drifter-17-trimaran-building-plans-now-available-in-pdf/ smalltrimaran.co.uk/building-the-drifter-17-trimaran-interview-with-mark-gumprecht/ Ok, here is a better one: www.boatdesign.net/threads/multihull-structure-thoughts.62361/page-60 Good luck, Rus

"Total crap"? The many videos of the gun being shot with no issues using expensive ammo by skilled users would not appear to jive with that. But I am not here to debate it. The gun works fine when used as recommended. My use in this video gave it every chance to not function properly. It works just fine now with upgraded ammo and break-in, as several folks have also experienced and provided feedback.

I bought the same Escort bull pup shot gun over two years ago in FDE and had the same issues with the lighter bird shot shells it cycled my 2 3/4” slugs no problem. Took it home and cleaned and oiled it and cycled the gun by hand quite a few times went back to the range and it cycled a lot better but still had a few light bird shot rounds that wouldn’t. I also picked up two 10 round mags and had the same cycle problems with it, it liked the slugs much better but it just needed some rounds cycled through it once it broke in it’s a nice gun to have for play and home defense. I put a $100 red dot on it and it was a lot more fun to shoot my wife loves it because it’s not my Remington 870 with a mag extension and weighs a lot less, she loves shooting .12ga and the Escort fits her well. I bought a Glock 41 .45 ACP and went to the range and at 25 yards sighting it in I didn’t even hit the paper with the first several shots and my wife said let me try and she hit the bullseye with her first shot and stayed on the paper for the next 7 rounds sets the Glock down and said there’s nothing wrong with this gun so I just went back down the line to my Remington 700 .308 and AR 15 .556 and she was fine shooting our various pistols she just didn’t like loading the mags until we got a couple mag loader now she loves it, she even told me she see’s why I bought so many magazines for our various guns and said it’s a lot of fun shooting not so much loading I just agreed and bought more magazines. Keep at it your Escort will come around.

Hi caesar, it is a less expensive gun and requires cycling and heavier rounds. Not a negative necessarily. I would just rather shoot cheaper stuff at $9/box than $25. It is currently loaded with heavy/expensive stuff while sitting in the closet. I looked at some red-dots but didn't buy. The battery would probably be dead when or if I had to use it. Just point and shoot is pretty accurate at close range, or in the dark. Sounds like your wife has a calmer trigger finger than you? I have a few guns but don't shoot a lot. Including an AR set up for competition shooting and 1954 303 Enfield that I rebuilt and is currently on the wall plaque I built - with both spike and blade bayonet and bandoleers. Have fun shooting with your wife.

"Error, the middle body should be 1.5 m more". Hi, please explain your statement. There are few hard and fast rules in Trimaran design. The boat performs beautifully. It is designed to be a minimum length, self-contained, for one person. Your statement makes it a two-person boat, heavier, and harder to store and transport. You are welcome to build yours to your chosen dimensions. Rus.

@RusinVanDyke Жыл бұрын
Hi Jared. And who might this "pro's" be? EProps didn't have a definitive answer, and I pressed them in several emails, but they did agree I should try the next shorter prop they offer for the Bailey with Quick Release System and agreed to sell it to me at a "discount" price of $270US plus shipping. Bailey no longer sells this frame (not designed for a trike) but does still offer parts, and they are not located down the street to drop in and ask questions. I have written earlier about the inadequacy of the Matrix frame in triangulation and subsequent stiffness. I am trying to work around that. I was using the prop recommended by Bailey, but possibly those specs are for their new frame? Bailey originally sold their kits with Helix props. Mine came from the previous owner with an old style (skinny) EProp. Between the cage/frame flex, prop flex, large glider, rough ground, and poor piloting, well, you see what happens. I am sure another dealer would be happy to sell me their product $$. This is happening on the ground so I think I will continue to work on it on my own. I have video from my last flight my wife took from the right angle that gives me some information to work with. A prop strike from dumping the trike is self-explanatory. Thanks. Rus

Hello Mr. B. I would call them inexpensive bird shot. I purposely bought them to test. As I showed, after about 40 rounds they actually started to cycle the gun and went through one rapid fire of the mag cleanly- I missed turning the camera on for that. I also clearly state I am not a professional shooter. Other shooters of this gun have had the same issue and overcame it purchasing expensive high brass rounds. I have some also that I have not shot yet. Maybe someday I will. Thanks. Rus

is this a variable speed fan , and whats the max CFM?
@RusinVanDyke
@RusinVanDyke Жыл бұрын
Hi Jared. I would go directly to their website for CFM info. When only using the photo panel for power, yes, it is variable based on sun exposure. I can hear the speed constantly vary as clouds move through and speed up and slow down as morning and evening transpire. When plugged in and using the power supply, the speed is constant. I only use the solar as the power supply seemed to run the unit all night - looking for 70 degrees as a auto shutoff. 70 is too cool a set-point in my opinion, thus wasting electricity. Nights are easlily 70+ this time of year in Ohio. Rus.

Hi bbj. I wrote "cocked" below in one of my responses when I meant Locked Open, as you suggest. I recall seeing references to your gun in a YT video as an earlier version of my gun. how much did this trimaran cost you
@RusinVanDyke
@RusinVanDyke Жыл бұрын
That is a question not typically asked of a private owner by a stranger, or answered directly by me ... I just looked up a retail price on a Dragonfly 25 - about $80,000 plus VAT plus shipping. So, allowing for age and 8' shorter length you can come up with an approximation. I take my time, educate myself, do my due diligence, and watch for what I have determined is a good price when making a purchase, thus seldom overpay. That means someday when I sell this boat, after keeping it in good shape and making improvements, I should be able to offer it at a good price to someone else - plus tax and shipping. How much do you think it cost, plus tax and delivery? (Hint: delivery was kept reasonable at $1000 as the seller was headed my way on other business.) Rus Some links- www.theyachtmarket.com/en/boats-for-sale/type/sailing-boat/multihull/trimaran/ www.boattrader.com/boats/type-sail/class-sail-trimaran/ Here is an interesting tri at a "lower" price point plus tax plus shipping/delivery costs: www.boattrader.com/boat/2022-trimaran-searail-19-8906713/

Thank you. I agree with your assessment. Below are some links that I have posted under other videos. One link that was informative is no longer active. You can do additional Google searches using information from these links. This is the only "Drifter 17" that was built. Mark is very creative and moves on to other projects/boats quite readily. Last time we wrote, he had moved to the Azores. Like you, this is the boat I was looking for, and meant I didn't have to build one. Eventually there will come a time to sell so I would recommend anyone interested keep up to date on new videos I post that may advertise the sale. Right now, it is too smoky from the Canadian fires for me to be motivated to go sailing. I do have plans to sail the islands, then to Canada and back, on a route to put me out of sight of land. www.boatdesign.net/threads/multihull-structure-thoughts.62361/page-60 smalltrimaran.co.uk/building-the-drifter-17-trimaran-interview-with-mark-gumprecht/ nauticaltrek.com/bateaux/essai-trimaran-drifter-17/ and this new one ... trimarans54.rssing.com/chan-13346167/latest-article4.php Rus

Hello GW, sounds like a nice, manageable trip. Not familiar with the area but Googled it. Lots of protection, it appears, at your destination. The M17 is a nice looking, very capable boat. Stiff enough to handle Lake Erie. If alone, I highly recommend an auto-steer to allow you some time off the helm to move around, and less stessful rigging. I have yet to be in the water as our cool Spring has not warmed the lake sufficiently to be comfortable/safe for solo sailing. Got some boat painting done though. My plan is to do the Islands, then Canada, and back to US while out of the sight of land while crossing - 5+ days. Covid restrictions are removed, making it simpler. Let me know if you are going to launch from Lorain and if I am available I will provide assistance/ recommendations if I can. Allow a full day for Lorain to Kelley's (you are a little slower then me) and check your weather window! I have launched and then slept on the boat to get an early start. rusvandyke at yahoo dot com.

Hi Ron, I just read that the other day too. I have also read that dry racking the gun a few hundred times can help, rather than running rounds through the gun. I just priced high velocity rounds (1500+ fpm) online at $3.00/shell - OUCH! I won't be using those to further break the gun in. No doubt the Winchesters I used are just potent enough to cycle this gun, at 40 cents/shell. It was fun when I put five rounds through it as fast as I could pull the trigger - I missed turning on the camera for that. Rus.

@RusinVanDyke Жыл бұрын
@@ElHossoLive Hi, I bought some more ammo but haven't shot the gun again to test it. I don't know much about shotgun ammo, but there was a fellow at Dunham's that was helpful. I bought a box of OO - 2 3/4" and a box of 3" #2 shot @ 1550 velocity - $24 and $20 (on sale). He told me the 3" shells will all have more gunpowder and give better cycling. Slug shells will also have better cycling power but are more expensive and not what I want to use for home defense. I just watched a video of a similar bullpup model that did not cycle properly with "game shot" shells like I used, but then cycled fine when fired with 2 3/4" OO shells. You can also try dry racking the gun several hundred times (cheaper than shooting), or store it cocked for a few weeks as someone else suggested. I am OCD about gun cleaning so not in a hurry to test the new ammo. Anyway, it is certainly less expensive shooting the game shells from WalMart @ $10/box, and they may start to run properly after break-in as I start to show. Let me know how it works out for you. Hello Eric. Mark designed/built the boat for himself when he lived on the NE coast. He then moved to Colorado where there was no opportunity to sail. He has designed/built many other boats. He sold it to a fellow in Nevada that "loves" tri's and owns several - but then found himself in a position to sell several, advertising via Ebay. I was shopping around for small tri's with a cabin and spotted it, did my Google "research", sent emails and made phone calls - spoke with Mark, made arrangement for shipping to Ohio, and then made the purchase. I previously watched, with interest, your build videos and will follow up with viewing your new posts. Hello Cullen. I only have to make sure there is nothing that can freeze, and I remove the batteries as they don't like cold temps. I cover the bottom of the amas with plastic wrap to eliminate chafing due to the silver Harbor Freight cover moving during winter storms; 40+ winds sometimes. I also place cardboard at higher chafe points on both amas and mast where the cover makes contact. I decided to let paint work go until Spring. I have other things to do and outside conditions this Fall are too wet and windy so far for acceptable results. I pretty much sail alone. Not being in a marina around others, and not knowing anyone else, I just make my own plans. I am just that way with most everything I do. Makes planning easier, I guess. Maybe always sailing smaller boats is the reason? While I had a very calm anchorage that night, for the Brown's football game that Sunday, during timeouts while showing off city and waterfront, they showed a surfer in full wetsuit on 5ft waves off the beach where I was anchored! A safe haven should always be in reach on the Great Lakes - they can get "mad" quickly. You take some nice photos. Rus.

My backup plan(s) is a Sea Anchor or if nearing shore a heavy @20# mantus with 200’ line and 20’ chain. I sail a Montgomery 17 1600# tough little boat.

Thanks so much for the interior shots. And yes to the wooden decor! I think Mark mentioned how in a small cabin like this, it's really nice that you are not just in a fiberglass shell and it sure looks nice. And like you said in your first video description, it sure looks like some good craftsmanship, too.

As for camera mount, you could use a simple headstrap. I don't know which camera you are using but GoPros since Gen6 has had pretty good image stabilization and since 8 it's out of this world efficient. Efficient enough that a head strap might not induce seasickeness in your viewers;). Alternatively, which could be cool, too - mount it on your solar panel holder. They make mounts that are meant to go around tubes and they may just open up enough.

Hi AV, I use an Akaso V50 Pro that has similar mounts. I am not open to mounting something to my head - too easy to get knocked off on a sailboat, and it looks stupid. I will take a look at mounting it to the solar panel mount, but not sure if that is high enough to clear the cabin for good effect. It is fine if I am not in the picture. Rus.

Rus, came here from smalltrimarans as I do go into that rabbit hole once in a while - and someday will buy/build something in this size. But I just wanted to say THANKS so much for your elaborate video descriptions. I think you think of YT as a bit of a depository for your thoughts and experience you are gathering on this boat and cudos for sharing it with everyone for years to come. I, for one, much appreciate it. And Gypsy looks exactly like what I dream about when I can keep my dreams in check. Those are, of course, "bigger, faster, more space" - but bigger boats don't get used as much and cost a heck more in upkeep. Congrats on finding and getting this gem:)

Hi AV, thank you for your kind words. I could do much better in filming/describing things, but I am not doing this for anyone but myself, frends, and family - I am also not monetized or that motivated. Someday I will sell the boat and these videos might also be helpful in that regard. Figure out how to get your email to me safely and I can send you the very basic plans that Mark provided me. I was poking around on Ebay looking for boats when I came across the ad for this tri. I moved quicky when the price was reduced and changed to "Buy Now". Cost another $1000 to deliver to Ohio from Nevada. I will have another video up in the next couple of weeks or so. Rus

Thanks for your comments. On Forespar's website it says the winch can handle up to 200sqft that should be larger than my jib. If you don't mind another question on rigging your boat. in one video I saw some attachment points for attaching the helping shrouds when you raise the mast. Where do these lines attach on the mast and what do you do with them when sailing?
@RusinVanDyke
@RusinVanDyke 2 жыл бұрын
Samuel, I would be more concerned with using the winch to raise the main. With my boat if I don't make sure that all pressure is relieved from the main it can be very tough getting it fully raised. The bridal consists of a top shackle and two bottom aluminum and plywood support brackets. The top shackle attaches to the mast about 6' up at a stubout. The port and starboard brackets slide onto the Jenny pulley track and get secured with two screws into 1.5"x3"x1/8" SS plates mounted to the deck. The bridal is removed after raising and lowering the mast. I leave it in the car. Stop this video 15 secs in and you can see the "stub" on top of the mast between the amas. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJivlXugg8h_oLc While you can see the brackets later in the video, I don't have good shots. I also had some extra lines I used the first time rigging, running from the brackets to the gin pole as I was unsure of what to do. Mark set me straight. Here are mast build pictures. smalltrimarans.com/blog/self-built-mast-for-small-trimaran/ Rus.

@@SamuelLanghorn Sam, as long as the mast is light (mine is) and the stays are kept fairly tight then there is not much load on them and 6ft works. (Any higher and it can't be reached to disconnect when raising mast.). Different story if the mast is heavier and gets to drifting too much to the sides. If you can design something that can be left in place for the deck attachments, without being a tripping/snagging hazard, that would be preferable to removing and installing brackets each time. There are hinged rings available that might work. Rus

Hi Samuell, I only used this anchor once, in tandem with the Lewmar when space was tight and I couldn't put out much rode; as shown in one of my videos. Probably the FX7: fortressanchors.com/anchors/fortress-anchors/ The primary anchor I use, as it is smaller and stored in the forward compartment, is this: www.amazon.com/Lewmar-2-2-Lb-Claw-Anchor/dp/B000N9V8UY/ref=asc_df_B000N9V8UY/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=241946017885&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9403873492167599210&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1023798&hvtargid=pla-653439233680&psc=1 Both anchors came with the boat. @@RusinVanDyke thanks for the details and the link. Are you happy with the winch? in some reviews I read that the plastic material does not hold up..... probably all depends how you use it. I think this winch is all I need. I will expect to use it for raising the main and maybe the jib sheet.
@RusinVanDyke
@RusinVanDyke 2 жыл бұрын
@@SamuelLanghorn I just read those reviews too. I don't use the winch handle so have no experience with the plastic not holding up. I just grab the line and pull! I also allow the jib/jenny to backwind first, then release the upwind sheet while quickly taking two wraps on the leeward winch and fully sheeting before it loads up. Makes for no effort to be fully sheeted. If necessary, I will then release some tension. With the Jenny having to go through the slot between its halyard and the furled jib, backwinding really helps guide it through. Otherwise, I have to seesaw the lines to clear it. You will have a larger rig to deal with (?) so I would contact the manufacturer and get their advice/input. You may need something stouter based on the complaints we both noted. Good Luck. Rus

Hi Cullen, If not for the batteries running low it would have been almost boring .;-) The bascule bridge. further downstream in Lorain, was dedicated to Charles Berry - Medal of Honor, Iwo Jima. Since I primarily worked in the railyard section of the Mill, I don't have good overall knowledge of the other sections. And, it has also been many years. Hello Cullen, the one negative to me is the two hour set-up. And I won't pay for mooring or dockage so that won't change. Yes, this small tri was well designed by Mark. I looked at smaller commercial built tri's and they were just too expensive, especially when shipping and exchange rate is added - would love to own a Dragonfly 25! The F31R is a powerful boat. I prefer staying on the Great Lakes for sailing with the better winds (there is a reason they are called the Great Lakes; hint: they aren't small). Planning on going out tomorrow and maybe meeting a fellow that is interested in looking it over. Running out of fair weather here. Too much sun skin surgeries and other travel have stunted my sailing opportunites. Thank you for your kind words. Rus

@@hoopaa6231 Good video - I am not that motivated to make this type of video as my boat is a one-off. I remove my side stays because they are Dynema and I don't want them seeing any more weather than necessary (5 mins). In my first video of setting up the boat in the yard, I show the removeable attachments that Mark designed for side support of the mast, and the lightweight gin pole (that I tied to wrong and luckily didn't break anything). He also designed a roller for the rear support, with a removeable fixed support (used while on the road) with built in tiedown. (This rear support structure is removed and replaced by the solar array while on the water.) The mast base slides onto the ball via a slot in the delrin base (you can find photos online from Mark's build). Then the trailer winch is used to raise/lower. Very smooth, but still a nervous time. The mast must be raised out of the water as the amas must be lowered and in place to attach the sidestays before raising. Just got back from a two-day weather window sail to Cleveland (video upcoming). My wife was able to stop while I was tearing down and saved me 15 mins off of that 2 hrs - taking off fenders, clearing snagged lines, grabbing odds and ends, and loading the car. The most time during setup is installing the tramps. When lowered, my rotating wing mast is supported only fore (trailer support) and aft as it is shorter and wood/foam composite; very light, stiff, and strong. Sailing single-handed, there are several additional things that have to be done to launch without damage that take time - fenders tied off and accessible bow line and spring line so the boat can be slid off the trailer and walked down the dock to tie-off without getting my shoes wet in cooler weather. The builder, Mark Gumprecht, did a very good job making the boat both light and strong, and self-contained for one person. Looking forward to seeing some videos of your boat. You will have the extra hands to man the camera!

@@RusinVanDyke Hi Rus, Your boat being a one-off is what makes it so interesting to me. I love to see how people have solved problems different ways. Mark has built a really nice boat. I would like to build something that size or smaller in the future. I think it would be so much fun to sail, explore and camp tiny little lakes (not the Great Lakes) in a boat like that. My wife is my main sailing partner so we pass a camera/phone back and forth. I have also mounted a GoPro on the stern looking forward, and another one on the companionway sliding hatch looking aft. Wind noise annoys me so I am using a Rode mic with a dead cat over it, plugged into the forward GoPro. That captures all of our conversation. I may drop it down below the hatch to further protect it from the elements. I’ve learned a lot from Ziggy Lavengood video’s on his Windrider 17 kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn6YhXmqbLyNpK8 I would like to try an Insta360. Hello Lee, my last contact with Mark was via email after he left a comment with one of my videos. He was happy to see the boat on the water. His intention was to move to the Azores, and I believe he did. The Azores had damage due to earthquakes shorting after our last email exchange and I have not heard anything from him since. I did ask him to stay in touch, but I don't know what his wishes are, therefore I am reluctant to make his email available. (I will send an email shortly and ask if he is interested in providing technical drawings.) I am not aware of any plans for my boat or his other larger designs. In my opinion, Mark enjoyed building boats, not spending the time drawing up extensive plans required for others to build his designs. There will come a time for me to sell the Drifter 17. Not sure when that will be, but I will put a notice on KZbin. I understand your frustration in finding the boat you want, yet not be able to obtain either it or the plans. Rus.
