I only now have been turned on to their music in December 2024 and I am absolutely smitten by The incredible instrument tones, The arrangements, The stiles and the way they are making other dimension type copies of popular '60s tunes that are like different better versions of great popular songs...... One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces...... Little fishes!!!! One of these days!!! Awesome!!! -

4 yrs... No comments yet... This means im in the right place! Nobody caught on cricket revisited psyde effects... Lyric says "these are the side effects"... AND the incredibly clever thing about this is they say it in mono on the right channel in the "side fx".... I've caught three of these ltricky word play things on their records... These guys are straight genius! I feel like they made this album for me.... An i their Charles Manson???

Robert Hunter himself said, when asked about the meaning of a certain lyric, that that was for each individual listener to find for themselves. This generation seems to need to be spoonfed all kinds of 'meaning', all the time. And, last but not least, regarding the comment that these songs should have been edited down to "under four minutes", WTF!! Is that because so many people now days have the attention span of a house plant? The Dead were never interested in writing short songs for radio airplay. They resisted Warner Brothers' demands to do so; unlike the Doors, who allowed 'Light My Fire' to be cut down to around three minutes so they could have a hit on the radio. Listen to some the Dead's live material, widely available on KZbin, before you make wide ranging statements about them based on a single album. And no, we didn't all have to use 'chemicals' to appreciate the music.

Too bad you two are too young to really get the Dead . Yes, it was all about the live experience. Jerry himself said that they never made any good studio albums, which many of their fans highly disagree with. Also, when Deadheads refer to the "Wall of Sound ", they are talking about the huge assembly of sound equipment created by Owlsley that only was used for one year, 1974 to 75. I was lucky enough to hear it at my first show (7/29/74, Landover, MD), and the sound was perfectly balanced and clear, especially in an indoor coliseum type setting. You alluded to it, but then used the term to identify something like Phil Spector's production work. Also, to listen to the Grateful Dead's music and not get into Hunter's lyrics kind of robs you of half of the experience. Of course they are mystical and non specific, that's the point!

John here ... Scott and I are 51 and52 respectively, so we're not 'too young' to appreciate the Dead's music. We're just not big fans. Also, I referred to their Wall of Sound PA system when I was introing the band. Later in the episode, I referred to their production technique by that term. Yes, the term was popularized by Spector, but he certainly wasn't and isn't the only one who's used it and I think it's an apt way to describe the Dead's dense recorded sound.

Where should I start? I think that to make a fair critique, especially when it comes to a retrospective look at a classic album, you need someone who has listened to the work repeatedly and has a minimum of context, both in terms of the artist in question and the historical moment in which that work emerges. And frankly, it's very annoying to listen to someone emit snickers all the time while talking about a certain subject, whatever it may be. How is that person going to convince us that he or she takes the topic of conversation seriously, right?

Why does every numpty who reviews this album start by saying it is based on Fish's childhood? There is not a single line in any song that shows any childhood action or thought of the protagonist. He is an adult from start to finish. If the title didn't tip you off, the album is about the ABSENCE of childhood, and about how reclaiming a childlike sense of wonder can be beneficial as a foil against the various despairs of adulthood and lend energy to your endeavours. What kind of childhood do they think Fish had? Booze, drugs, hookers, hitchhiking, dealing with the pressures of fame... poor little fella. Again... NOT ONE image of the protagonist as a child exists on this album. Please listen to the next album you review BEFORE you talk about it. Part 2... You can't figure out what the concept is? Yet you state about 5 times that it's about Fish's childhood. So you begin with a nonsensical misconception and then happily declare that the album has no clear concept. Okay... here's a simplified version to start you off... dude in despair is visited by the spirit of his younger self, who has some harsh messages for him... he reminisces about his ADULT life and sees a bunch of mistakes he has made... he takes some drugs and begs for his childhood back... he reaches a nadir thinking about all the evil in the world (that's what the war stuff is about)... finally has an epiphany, reclaims his lost sense of childhood wonder and adventure and, energised by this, he sets out to change the world for the better. Now listen to it properly, and take note that there are NO lines about Fish's childhood. How can you notice what keyboard was used in each song but not know what any of the lyrics mean? They are written down for you.

Born in 1986, I was young when this came out. My uncle was a classical musician and exposed me to the Juliet Letters (along with Spike/King of America)... It's the only album that's been with me 30+ years, and I'm always discovering new elements that I relate to throughout the years. I've never gotten sick of it. "Who do you think you are" on a rainy day is always a treat.

Thanks for sharing your review of this album guys. This is my favorite album by Living Colour. A lot of times music, whether it's an album or a single song, can bring back memories to times in our lives, but this entire album was the soundtrack of my life when I was in the middle of a rough breakup, and I left my home town for a couple of years to reset. You nailed it by saying it is aggressive and pessimistic, and I LOVED it. EVERY song hits me. Good work! Thanks again✌

Nice review! I love to see one of my favorite bands getting some attention! At one point you wondered how Freezepop made their way into Guitar Hero/Rock Band. I can answer that. Freezepop is based in Boston. Harmonix, the company that created Guitar Hero 1 & 2 and all the Rock Band games are also located in Boston. Freezepop's former bandmate, The Duke of Pannekoeken (Kasson Crooker ) was an employee at Harmonix. Since licensing famous songs is expensive, a lot of the songs in the early games were either covers or originals from smaller/local groups. Many other employees at Harmonix also had bands that were featured in their games. There are 7 Freezepop songs in Rock Band 1-4. Also, since you were curious about how they'd work in a rock oriented game, I can attest that the songs are really fun in the game! A couple songs have remixes that were specifically made for the game containing electric guitar (Get Ready to Rokk, for example). The rest all have you playing the synth leads on the guitar, which is totally fine since a Rock Band guitar is really more of a keytar than a string based instrument anyway. The vocals are obviously fine, and the drums are mostly really fun, I think in big part because they're recorded in real-time as you mentioned. Cheers, A devoted Rock Band and Freezepop fan

Thanks for the info, Sam. I wish I would have seen this before we recorded tonight so I could have read it on the show. One of these days, I'm going to have to find a way to play Get Ready to Rokk in Rock Band. A while hack I figured out how to play the riff on guitar and it's a lot of fun. I can only imagine that it's even more fun in the game. - John

@@johnandscotto5207 Thanks for the reply! The solo on Get Ready to Rokk is pretty nuts, Less Talk More Rokk is also great on guitar, and Science Genius Girl is crazy hard on drums (which is pretty funny because it sounds kind of innocuous). I'm a drummer at heart so here's someone playing Science Genius Girl, if you're interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4ndfHWkhsyNpNUm52s&ab_channel=Hunnybee2SH (I linked only the last minute of the song because it shows the main beat found throughout the whole song preceded by an extra difficult drum break)

Anderson is my favorite vocalist as well. Mainly because of an amazing range of emotion I haven't heard from anyone else. The Baroque section you note is even more interesting when you consider it actually, more specifically, mimics Gregorian chant. The Strings are actually strings, conducted and arranged by David, (now Dee) Palmer.

It sounds to me as if you've never done drugs. There's so much to this music that isn't standard. A lot of it seems lost on you guys. Im glad you overall liked the feel and energy, though. I highly, highly recommend going back to their first album. Its much more compact and punchy and is likely far more too your liking (and Flea plays all the bass, Jon is in rare form and Omar is much more bluesy). A couple of notes though - John Frusciante did a number of solos on L'Via - im not sure how this wasn't obvious. But then, i don't get how you could have a negative view on Omar's solos either so, fair i suppose. Cedric has specifically said he doesn't mean to sound like Plant and isn't particularly influenced by him. Just FYI The continual references to other music seem like real over-reaches. I GET them, but you're being hyperbolic to and end that, appears, to be a want of dislike. Its pretty weird to make comments on the band's mindset (impressed by themselves etc...) kind of not a music review at that point. If you listen to their albums (most pointedly this one) as SOUNDTRACKS and not Albums all of the points you disliked become incredibly poignant and meaningful. There's impatience coming through your notes that speaks to an expectation that makes no sense here.

This is one of the most superficial reviews of a recording, or book or anything else I've ever heard. These 2 knuckleheads are making the claim the lyrics are superficial? They must've gotten the Cliff notes for this " review. " Just one example: " Dear Brumus "......Robert Kennedy, Jr.'s head was literally blown apart in 1968, L.A. The name of his dog was Brumus. Brilliant lyrics.... " Dear Brumus, the ship'll be ours and you got to roll with it Though your master's head's blown off you got to go with it Roll with the natural flow Like water off a spinning ball..." Kantner is enticing Brumus to get on board....speaking to him in a vision he can understand and enjoy...." like water off a spinning ball..." Next time, one of these guys might want to delve deeper than the millimeter of thought they gave to one of the more defining Albums bridging the 60's and 70's.

Saw them do Frances in NYC at the Roseland Ballroom. I can't believe it was so long ago. They actually brought out this old dude to play piano on those Latin sections of Via. The whole show alternated between rippingly fierce and abysmally boring. I agree the stuff meanders and is derivative. I like derivations with energy like this because the classic bands are no longer making music. It's sort of brand extension rather than mimicry. I feel like the stuff I grew up with lives on in more than a cover band. PS Thanks for the mention.

This album is one of the holy grails of engineering. Producers use this album when they judge to a control room. Its that sonically incredible. Jellyfish is an homage to all their heroes. you guys must be insane to use the word derivative. This sounds like everything, yet it sound like nothing. This is pure power pop/ The word play is uncompromising, deft and compelling. They are not trying reinvent the wheel, just supercharge it. These compositions are so complex, it might take a few listens to actually comprehend whats going on. these are all stories. this is not floss, Its genius. Musicians bow to this record. We are all in awe of the monumental achievement. Maybe its just to clever for its own good. while people were staring at their shoes, these guys made this inexplicable monster.

You can get the lyrics readily. And they are not what you think. Translation is often not easy idiomaticly. Example: give me a break comes out give me a rest. Or the phrase breaking new gate sang in English should have been translated breaking new ground. The new song Bubble was written for a TV show but their meaning is clearly don't put us in a bubble. Or don't categorize us.
