Well, here's the "Oddest" question of all! I wonder if this odd fire distributor, can be adapted to run another OddFire 90 degree V6 that's foreign & has the same firing order of 90/150 ect......
@takingbackmejlk Жыл бұрын
It would have to have the same setup and the same timing cover as well as the camshaft with the same exact helical gear that will mate with the helical gear on the bottom of the distributor, as a comparison a lot of even fire distributors go in vertical however the odd fire distributor goes in at a bias angle into the timing cover with a helical gear. Experiment at your own risk because as you know engine parts need to be precise to the thousandth of inch, anything off can cause a complete catastrophe within the engine especially if they do not mate properly. You might try looking online to see if there is a compatible HEI distributor for the engine you are looking to use it on otherwise for liability reasons I have to recommend not to try it.

Not so much a genius just relentless in researching, it took me 6yrs and blowing a motor for it to set me into motion to figuring it out. I have to give most of the credit to the reference link I provided to britishv8 they had clarified the points being designated to odd and even cylinders, without them I'm not sure I would have figured it out entirely, the rest of the footwork on the cap and explaining everything I had put together but I couldn't have done it without them. Hope all who come here can at least take something from it. Thanks for the comment! Have a wonderful day!

I know this video is been up a while. Hopefully you’re still monitoring it. Does it matter what direction the VA points if the piston is at TDC and the rotor is aligned to hit #1 post? If I put my VA pointed to the radiator it gets guillotined by the fan.
@takingbackmejlk2 жыл бұрын
thank you for commenting, youtube is not notifying of comments I apologize for the late response, you should have the nose of the distributor facing pretty much at the nose of the carburetor given the illusion of the angled distributor distorting this perception, basically the way the illustration in the video shows it facing give or take a few degrees, the VA is getting guillotined because of the inaccurate size of the aftermarket VA, the original VA's were shorter and the nipple was shorter as to not intrude the clutch fan, this causes a problem because you can only face the distributor and in turn the VA in only one direction as indicated in the vid, the only thing you can do is look online for a shorter VA with a shorter nipple, the originals had the nipple on top of the VA too, not protruding out the front, find one of those at a local wrecking yard or online and you will be golden.

The Odd Fire ignites at 90 and at 150 degrees of rotation, rather than the 120, 120, 120.. of a 90 degree V8. The 'short' and 'long' duration represents ignition timing of 90 - 150 - 90 - 150 - 90 - 150 degrees of crankshaft travel as opposing cylinders share crankshaft journals.
@takingbackmejlk2 жыл бұрын
absolutely, i didn't want to get too technical with everything so that everyone could understand the basic operation of it, there's so many things you can go over with these engines like 2 pistons per journal set at 30 degree intervals to get the 90 and 150 firing sequence unlike the split pins etc, this was just to illustrate the most basic function. thank you for adding that as well as many who read comments appreciate the technical data as well.

Very cool. I had always wondered on the unequal tabs length under the distributor. Now I see why they are that way. Thanks!
@rgmoffat20723 жыл бұрын
Good job, the only correction I’d add is that your illustration of moving the cap is flawed, remember the cap is keyed to the distributor so it only goes on one direction. Therefore, you can move the plug wires as long as you are on the odd “O” cylinder (1,3,5). I know you said you tested it, but they run fine as long as the odd cylinder wires are connected to the ones you have labeled as “O”. Mine has number 1 plugged in where yours is marked as 5.
@takingbackmejlk3 жыл бұрын
funny story is I actually originally ground off the key on the underside of the cap to purposely place the cap how I wanted because I was having such a hard time getting it to run right when I very first got my 231 v6, originally I did not know or understand anything about the timing of an odd fire engine for 6 years of having my car that had an odd fire in it, I just put that reference in there because looking at all the pics and research I did online over the years it looked like other people had done the same thing I did by way of grinding off the key tab under the cap to face their caps how they wanted, I could tell this because of the vacuum advance and the way the cap was facing in relation to the vacuum advance, the vacuum advance and the cap could not be faced the way it was in some of the pics that are online without modifying and grinding off the key that is under the cap so I just referenced it to prove to anyone who else did the same thing that it was wrong to do so and to face it like how you were saying and that is "the original way that cap was designed" as I stated this after explaining that in the vid but yes most people won't relate to that particular issue or understand why I mentioned it unless they themselves modified their cap like I did originally. ( reference vid time 15:06 I show and explain briefly that I originally ground off the tab and this was way before I had any idea of the timing of an odd fire and way before I ever made the video, the flaw was that I did this to the cap originally in the first place ( 6yrs previous to this video ) to try and remedy the missfiring.

Thanks for the video. Solved all the motor problems with my 69 CJ-5. My mechanic had placed the electronic distributor in completely wrong. It would run but horribly especially under a load and backfire, smoke etc. Even when I bought it the plug wires weren't in the correct order with the old distributer. This is probably the best it has run in 15 years. Thanks again!
@takingbackmejlk3 жыл бұрын
No problem! Yes they actually run pretty smooth, there is a common misconception that the odd fire engines run "rough" because of the odd fire timing but I found this was only the case because no one knew how to set them up properly, I didn't know how either for 6yrs of owning one I was tired of the engine running like crap so I set out to figure out the timing and now we have this vid. Stoked to hear it's running how it should!!

The older odd fires I think had the point system distributors, I am not as familiar with those distributors, unfortunately I can not recommend what to do for your set up. However if you have a 225 dauntless I believe you can convert over to the HEI and then just follow this video. I also did the same thing on my first oddfire rebuild, I put my distributor back the way it was removed and the person didn't have it set right either, it was facing at the driver side cylinders. I spent years having problems with my timing and inevitably I blew an engine because of prolonged misfiring and of course information on how these work is non-existent thats why I put this video up because if I couldn't find any clear way of setting these things up then I knew other people were having the same problem just based on how many ways I saw other people setting them all up differently, it didn't make sense why so many people had them facing differnt directions and having the #1 wire on all different terminals.

It was the crankset of a the aluminum 90 degree 215 inch V8 shortened by two, which meant that the ignition timing would be 90 - 150 - 90 - 150 - 90 - 150 rather than the 120 - 120 - 120 -... 'even fire' timing of a 90 degree V8 as opposing cylinders were still paired on the three journal shaft. In 1977 GM 'split' and offset the paired crankshaft lobes to allow all six cylinders to fire at 120 degrees rotation for 'even fire'. Some 'even fire' 225 engines were built before displacement increased to 231, later rebranded as 3.8 Liter.
