The music is so fast because in 1992/3 we were all on Snowballs which were not MDMA, they were MDA created by chemists employed by the state of Lithuania. It needed to get foreign currency quickly to stabilise its economy in the transitionary period between the Ruble and the Lithuanian Lita, because of the collapse of the CCCP which rendered the Ruble worthless. MDA is akin to a cross between crystal meth and LSD. TBH I actually prefer MDA to MDMA. It's a lot more fun. A night out back then was an aerobic workout. The NI scene was dominated by DJs playing 138BPM+ pitched up UK (Progressive) House, European (predominately Italian) Hard House, the emerging German Trance sound, Italian and Dutch Hardcore Techno and some UK breakbeat Hardcore. Once you started, you literally could not stop moving. If you were raving during 1992/3 it was entirely normal to bring a change of clothes on a night out and T shirts were literally being wrung out in car parks from Donegal to Portrush. It might be worth noting that because of the Snowballs, the punters were very intolerant of DJs who didn't get in and out of tunes pretty quickly, which I would wager is why this mix is as rushed as it is. Crowds here were very demanding at the time, and ravers chased faster and more direct music, which is why you saw the shift into Hard Trance at places like Kelly's and the Point Inn, which was spear-headed by Molloy who got into the new sound coming from Europe at the time - check his phenomenal Keep 'er Lit mix which features tracks from labels like XVX, Frankfurt Beat, No Respect, Edge and Eye Q where he outshone DJs like Sven Vath or CJ Bolland, who were comparable at the time. On the night of the tape's release, Glen did what Glen would often do - he played the same set live and then sold the tape after. Fortunately I was there to hear/see it go down - he literally tore Kelly's a new arse, with Sonic Infusion's - Unfuture being a particular stand out. I never saw a club with a few thousand people respond in such a manner to simply the introduction of a hi-hat. If you don't know, it's a very repetitive track with a sample of an Aphex Twin/Polygon Window track as its kickdrum, that just at the point where you think there's a problem and the record is damaged, this hi-hat pattern drops in. Granted, it's a trick the track only gets away with once, but to hear a cheer from a packed club go up for something as simple as a percussion loop, illustrates the power of this music under the 'correct circumstances'. A mate at the time bought the tape in Kellys' lobby on the way out for £5. It's a great set and one of Glen's best. No Need 4 Hype is really not representative how good Glen could be.

I was one of the STV camera crew that filmed this. One of my earliest jobs as a rookie in the business. I've filmed OCS several times since then. This summer I'll be in charge of crews filming Pulp, Sam Fender and the 1975, to name but some. 😎

I was there :) 1st ever gig, 3 best mates and me, 15 years old, mind blowing. One of the best nights of my life. I'm now the age my good old dad was when he bought us the tickets at Ripping Records in Edinburgh and then drove us all to this gig and picked us up afterwards. My dad is an absolute legend, as are OCS.

I used to sit and watch the DVD of this gig with my best mate of many years who's no longer with us. I no longer have the DVD but I like to watch this video occasionally to remember him and those mad days we had. Even just listening to the albums still brings me to tears most times. Miss you Jason, wish I could hear you rip the fuck out of this crazy world nowadays. You'll always be with me, especially when I have a jam to myself the way we used to Ocean Colour Scene and Joy Division records. I'll never let this world forget what it's missing without you. Never stop raving up there in the sky pal. RIP Jason. It'll be 4 years this June, and you best believe I'll be back to listen to this when your day you caught the train comes, and no doubt a few times before it comes.
