Lady, straw singing totally works. I am a new singer and practicing with a straw works like a charm every time. Maybe it doesn't work for you but who are you to decide if it works or not for others? Silly and arrogant.

Thank you for this, I am sort of getting it. I love to sing, but am never invited to sing with others, because they hate my voice as much as I do..

I missed the workshop, but I was never told about this, my voice kept getting stuck in my throat, even though I had an open throat, raised soft pallet, and was using my breath support. My abdomen was firm, not locked, so it was supplying that steady small stream of air, still I was in my throat. Then, I started focusing it on the soft pallet, and came to realize what you're saying, before seeing this video. My teacher never mentioned the hard pallet, but told me she wanted a full supported sound with good projection, but if she would've mentioned the hard pallet, I would have gotten their much quicker, without working my vocal chords until I figured it out. I did get some mild inflammation while I was discovering, and finally came to this effortless result. If I had been told about the hard pallet, I could have avoided problems altogether. It's a learning experience.

Please explain this in a longer video, this is my main problem and it is killing me slowly, I feel frustrated and desperate for years. Everyone explains it like this spinning note but HOW do you actually do that? I am begging you. Please. I'd give an arm or a leg to learn that. Have been struggling for a decade. Arden? I wanted to tell you about something else! Since I made the realization that the goal of appoggio is the Bernoulli effect in your vocal tract, and the wings of an airplane just rely on this scientific principle to make the plane rise, this last week or so, I am trusting my technique on a different level than I was before! During Mass on Sunday, little kids in particular were staring at me. When I saw this, I just closed my eyes, and sang to God, so I wouldn't even be in the mindset of wondering what people thought. God won't judge me for singing. He gave me the voice to start with. Singing IS all about connection with that universal energy, and helping others tap into that energy as well... Take care. Thanks again! Love, Susan

I suppose that, even if you are just warming up on lip trills, you are still making music! And, hopefully, BY practicing your craft, you eventually will make a difference in the world! Thanks, Arden! Be safe on Election Day. Take care. Susan

Does this mean that using a thumb and a finger on either side of th emouth to make the trill easier, is actually counter productive and to be avoided? If that is true, I could probably manage a few trills in a very low register.
@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio 15 күн бұрын
Hey John, good question. With efficient breath support you should be able to do a lip trill without having to hold your finger on either side of your mouth. What you're doing by keeping your finger there is managing the amount of air coming out your mouth which really should be managed by your lower support. The fact that it's hard to do it w/o your fingers gives you some data that you're moving too much air b/c your support isn't doing what it needs to do. Since you're resonating with this, have you seen the free 7 Day online Masterclass Series I'm doing starting this Thursday 11/14/24? We'll be coaching a ton on breath support, there will be live, hands-on coaching opportunities for participants - you should come!!! Arden? You might appreciate this story! Yesterday, when I was at work, my person was watching Jeopardy. They explained the Bernoulli effect. Something clicked, and I realized something. The Bernoulli effect is the "feel" of supported singing. When you lean on your support in one continuous motion down and out of your abdominals, it is almost like you can feel a pocket of air beneath your larynx, extending the relaxed feeling all the way in your neck and jaw and tongue over to where your collar bone meets your shoulder... I hope that this post will help someone in your collective! Take care! Susan
@pointofnoreturn3103
@pointofnoreturn3103 26 күн бұрын
Arden? I did a bit of research into how Bernoulli effect works on the wings of an airplane. The reason you can feel that pocket of air beneath your vocal chords when you are singing correctly is because the shape and tilt of your larynx, combined with the slower velocity of air coming up through your vocal chords caused by appoggio singing, creates that vacuum of high air pressure. It is all science! Do the wings of an airplane need to learn to sing correctly in order to rise? No! It is all about that right, steady air pressure that enables a baby to cry with a full bodied, resonant tone without going hoarse! Appoggio singing enables the Bernoulli effect so you don't have to tense up your neck, or raise your larynx, or support with the root of your tongue, or sing with jaw tension! That is exactly WHY the shape of support is like a Christmas tree coming out of your back! Color me dumbfounded! Take care. Happy Halloween! Love, Susan

Hi, Arden! I chuckled when you talked about reinventing the wheel! I felt my abdominals go out when I laughed! Our bodies DO know how to make a supported sound! It's just a thing of one continuous motion down and out throughout however many pitch changes there are in the phrase... Thanks! Susan
