You can tell this is Pick Withers on drums. The drummers who came after him were so mediocre. Sorry guys. It had to be said.

So far, this is the best drum cover of this song, sans the first cymbal crash (performed a mallet roll instead of crash), I've seen on KZbin. My band covers this song and as with this and other Pic Withers tracks, it's both technical and soulful. Very thought out. Great performance!

Pick Withers was awesome and so was your cover. That's not an easy song to drum. I just came out of a long hiatus on guitar myself. Keep it up!

The video description is wrong, this is the re-recorded version from April 1978, two months after the album. The one recorded in Summer 1977 is another one, three studio recordings within a few months !

Just checked this and you are right! Both were recorded at Pathway but as you say a second recording (this one) was made for the single release of Sultans. This single was recorded in April 78 and released in May. The album release was delayed due to issues with the sleeve art and was released in June 78, following a disastrous European tour with Styx.

@@mikewade5902 My source is the Michael Oldfield book about Dire Straits, page 51. The recorded the first and the third studio version at Pathway studio, the second (the album version) was recorded at Basing Street Studios

@JonnyEllis1 I agree 100 % with You ! In 1978. someone brought that single on one of our local radio stations and they rolled it and that was the first time I have heard Dire straits. I was 10 years old and just begin to play guitar and that song and band becomes one of mine main music influences. And, just like You, had that single (someone give it to me, he didn't like it, heh), but lost it durin the years and have been verysad because it was THE BEST version of the song...
