I work with Autistic children, I can't understand how adults can treat children like this! The closest thing to a restraint I have used is to hold a child's hands in mine or their arms at their side to stop them hitting me or trying to choke me or something (very rare) I never use much strength, it's more symbolic as a way to interupt unwanted behaviours, there is no way it could leave a mark and if the child became upset or struggled I let go straight away. As for seclusion? The closest would be putting a 7 year old boy with high functioning asd and adhd in his room to cool down (if the door is closef I am standing right outside, but usually I leave it open) the door doesn't lock and I can either see or hear the child at all times. I can Possibly understand restraining a child who is coming after you with a knife or something Seriously dangerous (life or death) but multiple adults holding down a scared and upset child is sickening. I have high functioning ASD and find being touched (Especially when upset) can be very diatressing...if you Seriously can't calm the child down, taking the to a spot where they can safely roll around and cry would be far more effective and humane!

We shall banded the use of restraint and seclusion

If he was your son in so sorry so hard to even watch I rather see actual video of it but this come on restraints have caused a lot of abuse they should be banned which in NY they are legal in only 33 states. People are trained to do that in case if emergencies not random Abby in the cape cod video I liked I didn't mind it which is cine just imagine how it would feel. Me I've experienced that hold for 3 hours and 45 minutes I was only 6 mind of a 3 year old I have the same diagnosed.on the news on 4.16.15. Same abuse it feels good to be held like that. I've been held in A standing basket. Seated basket, a t hold , a prone team prone, full arms behind back, small child, chin lock, figure 4 leg lock head lock, half crab, I have been secluded for days 3-4 days. I can't get over this I restrain my dolls even myself my care giver holds me if needed deep presser only like a basket hold we call it a backward hug. When I get a child I'm naming it Abby and going to restraint. Her like that video. Exactly the same holds. The schedule would be wake up 2spanks hard. Bed bath then hold. If Abby throws a piece of ppaper she will be held like that in a corner. For 20-40 minutes . so when Abby is held the reason would be not going to bed, not bathing getting up not handling the dinner. Not brushing her hair, not following orders. Which is a lot of stuff. Abby would have a straight jacket. Abby will have four points a stretcher or transfer board of Olympic papoose and a weighted blanket.

I would think in this day and age that a teacher would not do this but try to hold him, gently cuddle and let him know it is alright and when he calms down put him in a close to her where he is safe and just explain kindly that the child is upset and will settle down..tell the others to keep on with their studies and get to school nurse in to help. Never abuse an autistic child or any child for that matter...these women should be promptly fired. this is so tramatic I cannot believe this child will ever trust a teacher again. SHAME ON YOU WHO ABUSE A CHILD FOR ANY REASON!!!!!

What too many 'teachers' and 'specialists' don't get: behavior is communication, violence is behavior. When a child lashes out, it isn't a behavior issue, the problem is NOT, NEVER with the child. The problem is with the people forcing something on the child that is painful, too much as far as sensory input, or just frustration at not being allowed to be themselves or do what they need to do to cope with the world around them. My son is only 6 and he is helping the special needs educators at his school to change how they view these types of situations, because I am helping them to understand him.

@therealvenna could I please get an update for your son? My daughter exhibits the same early signs as your son with autism (facial expression and using thumb instead of index finger) Is he able to communicate now?

This was my childhood from 5-14 for having "ADHD" but in reality, now after countless assessments in both by teen and adult years, I have only PTSD thanks to my "treatment". This isn't all that happens in these schools and psych wards. Rapes, seclusions, restraints, forced medications, and authoritarian rules not unlike Juvenile hall, actually 10Xs worse (I've been to both). I knew it was wrong then, I know it's wrong now, we have to stop this. :'(

At the last day of school when I was in 12th grade and about to graduate, I was upset because one of the aides was short with me and another one was snippy also, and they grabbed me and carried me to a seclusion room and kept me there for five minutes...it was across from the cafeteria and I just sat there and watch my classmates being out there and having fun...while I was still in the seclusion room....

there is training to restrain a child, but only to defend yourself or keep the child from hurting others or themselves... but only then... there are steps to be taken... restraint is the last resort... ive never seen that technique used before... them teachers should be fired...
@bizarreabomination11 жыл бұрын
2:08 - 2:12... We call that a "basket hold". It is used in training as an example of how to never restrain someone, because it crushes the lungs and suffocates the patient. People have died in police custody being held like this. Restraint should only be a last resort, when they are trying to hurt themselves or someone else. NEVER as a punitive measure.

OMG! When I was watching/reading it. I swear I was dreaming. I thought someone stold my son story. This is one, of many that happen to him, almost to the t. He was 5 when it started. Almost every special ed teacher, aid or other has hurt him, or left him unattended 2 let others to bully aND BEAT HIM. HE was arrested when he was 6 charged with DV and property damage because he couldnt breathe after 5 teachers that thru him on top of a table in an illegal prone restraint yet they werent charged.

I an ABA therapist and there while they're are a few occasions where children should be put in holds it should ONLY be used when someone could get seriously injured otherwise. That's ridiculous that a five year old was put in a hold just for crying. My client is five and he hits and bites and there still is no need unless he was really out of control. (We have never done a hold on him) No one should be doing it without a certification either.

This is a problem in all schools and i think it would be in every ones best interest to have camera's threw out the entire school,or let us put a camera on our special needs students and then we will feel that they are safe.

You work in a Psych ward! NOT a school! We had teachers who would tie kids to kids to their chair with their hoody sleeves. One even put a big heavy room divider around my desk so she did not have to look at me. All of which is illegal in MA and should not be legal anywhere. It is abuse and a dangerous if there were a fire.

So he was restrained for throwing a piece of paper on the floor? Wow! Was he hitting you? Then a restraint would not have been necessary. He's autistic give him a break. I was restrained too when I was 8 and now 14. And I was restrained again at 13 when they gave me a shot in my a** cheek 'cause I was banging on the bed with my foot. They asked me if I wanted to take the pill and I said no, and I didn't think they would come with a needle and hold me down and shoot me in my a** cheek! I think i

I DO have asperger's syndrome myself and god how I would love to tell everyone especially the schools that those on the spectrum attends that we are not animals. we are humans who simply have some annoying issues with the way our outside world rushes in at us with no respect for our feelings, and yet they wonder why we feel the way we do.

A husband "merely held his wife down so she couldn't move" every time she said or did something he didn't like or anytime she was disobediant. Although the wife was not beaten, would you consider this action to be Spousal Abuse? A form of forcible restraint? Would you say that this husband was using his strenght and size to intimidate his wife into being Obediant? Yes... Yes You Would! Why is it though that people don't have the same compassion for children or individuals with disabilitiy's?
@crissiwatson112 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking that either your an idot or we are not watching the same video? Did you miss that fact that this child wasn't being aggressive until this teacher felt the need to restraint her for "NOT SITTING DOWN"!! Does this really seem reasonable? If this were your child or one "WITHOUT" a disability would you be "OUTRAGED"? This is sickening!! This treatment creates "VIOLENT" individuals and these teachers need "JAIL TIME"!!!

In defense, it's an unfortunate truth many teachers r not trained in the proper methods o/caring for special needs kids. I worked for an Autism Intervantion Center. We strove to educate and enrich the lives of Autistic children in the comfort of their own homes. We were shown a restraint method which did not utilize our hands, but arms -a gentle but strong method used for the sole purpose of calming the child by creating a 'bubble' around them. It worked in moments, & we were back to learning.

@annam20 these kids don't need to go to school if they are being mistreated. what in the world would they benefit just because they need to be in the public if they are constantly being abused? my son is 21 and autistic and that happened to him. I have to be his voice if they can't depend on us, who else are there.

kicked, and many other assults. But this is the argument for many people. Truth is I care about every patient I have ever had. But the systems that manage these programs do not spend enough money or time to eliminate seclusion or restraint with medications or effective therapy. For the respect of this video I hope that the workers were re trained and or repremanded. I also hope isaiah is ok. what I saw was also an attempt to keep isaiah and then selves safe but they failed to do so.
