The bridge on my Yamaha bass rusted badly because my cat peed on it. I just bought the Himass because it was the lowest priced on ebay at the time. Better sound over the stock L bridge is a bonus then!

The crucial task for any bridge upgrade on a Fender-style bass is that the saddles not be able to move side to side. Either the saddles themselves, or even just the adjustment screws, should sit in some kind of trench in the baseplate, fixing them in that lateral position. So many solutions out there are over-engineered to do this, but that’s really the simple job to do.

Great comparison!!! I have installed this model for 4 string on my Harley Benton JB75 Jazz Bass it turned really cool! But in precision it sounds with few low end, it had removed most characteristic of precision bass.

Contact per se isn't important, it's overall stiffness. You don't want vibrations being transferred to the body if you want more sustain. However, the test here is flawed as the new bridge went into new holes, potentially more securely, making the system stiffer. So the before would ideally include taking the original bridge, drilling out the holes, plugging with dowels, redrilling the holes and refitting the original. An advantage I find with high mass bridges is that if you palm mute and your hand rests on the bridge, it feels more pleasant. They also look better.

Yes. It’s an upgrade every player can do. For the most cases, it just requires unscrewing and screwing (and of course, re-stringing).

Those pull through holes for the strings are a deal breaker for an expensive aftermarket part IMO. No reason to not have quick slots like on Ibanez or other modern bridges.

@@wbertie2604they are excellent for gigs, every time i break a string its just pull the string a bit to stretch the windings and detatch from the bridge slot, and leave the string hanging from the headstock. Keep playing... just be alert enough to transpose on the fly. Mmm bracing...

To me the “standard” Fender bridge seems like a cheap piece of bent metal, but to be fair they are quite functional. I put the Hi-Mass bridge on all of my Fender basses because I “feel” like it’s built to last better than the standard bridge. I do get a little more sustain, but in real-world playing I never hold a note long enough for this to be of any benefit compared to the standard bridge. The bottom line for is that I feel it’s a nice solid piece of gear, and make me feel that it will hold up better.

I have noticed similar tone differences just by loosening the strings, stretching and releasing them a few times and then re tightening them. I do it periodically to refresh the brightness and sustain of my bass in between string changes. Glad you like the upgrade, even if just for the feel under the fingers.

You did some nice work to make that bridge fit. Fender’s website would do well to add some diagrams with dimensions next to the bridge they are selling like the Gotoh Japan website. It sure makes it easy to tell if a bridge will fit or not without all the extra work.

I can totally hear that the hi-mass has more civilized high-end and sounds warmer in the mid and low with more sustain. Sounds good with that Nordstrand NP5FA. also, real talk: if you honestly can't hear the difference a-b between the recordings, might consider a hearing check. Most of the difference I heard was in the high end.

I’m a professional audio engineer and like to think I have a trained ear. What I heard was there was a slight increase of the low midrange making the bass sound slightly warmer. Sure, not a lot but I can’t tell you how many thousands of hours and dollars I’ve worked and spent on making an instrument sound slightly better. 😅

The fender bent steel bass bridge is garbage. This is close to garbage. The real bass bridges out there give you much more midrange growl and much more sustain. I can understand your thousands of hours fighting stock Fender basses. I now own zero.

High mass bridges rarely make any difference in recording, but they offer a little bit of note definition and a more "balanced" tone in a room in my experience, not by much however overall IMO the biggest upgrade they offer is reduce neck dive

Whether or not it helps with tone and sustain, a heavier bridge could still be useful for neck dive. Basses have larger and heavier headstocks so it’s understandable for that problem to be so common.
