I've yet to see any Cambridge outlast a Yamaha. Unlike Yamaha, they aren't exactly setting the bar in this department. If your's survives a decade or longer, it's an anomaly. Yamaha amplifiers usually last anywhere from 15-30 years, sometimes longer.

Hi sir great review. Currently have a rega brio with q acoustic 3020 ( treble bright ). Planning to replace my speakers with either Rega Kyte or AE 100 -2. Demoed the Rega Kyte with musical fidelity 3i amp, there were excellent in the midrange. Also heard the AE 300 ( AE 100 no stock ) costing 3 times with the same amp, sounded fantastic and more lively.Both these speakers were highly reviewed by you. Which speakers, Rega Kyte or AE 100-2 would match the Rega Brio tonally? Thank you
@analogholic_reviews4 күн бұрын
I own the AE-100 mk2 and have paired it with my kid's Brio and I like it! Decent detail and warmth, no brightness. I have not heard the Q3020 but I heard the 5010 model powered by Rega IO. Not a warm sound but sounded more detailed and crisp without being bright. Hope that helps!
@Shan-t2d2 күн бұрын
Thank you very much. The AE 100-2 uses a 130mm midrange driver compared to Rega Kyte 125mm midrange driver. Also the AE has more choice in finish compared to Rega Kyte's phenolic resin cabinet. I am going for the AE. Thanks

Great review. I'd never heard of Robin Trower, so looked him up on Tidal. I was brought up listening to John Peel, so I've started ther. Wow. I can't believe I've missed that one. Brilliant. I'm sure he's been an influence of The Black Keys. Their early stuff is very reminiscent of this. Thanks.

You have been bitten by the Chord Electronics bug, eh? You mentioned before that Rob has a top-of-the-line Chord Electronics set-upon his house that is really impressive and I wondered when you'd start reviewing their stuff. Also, Robin Trower is a great guitarist. His vibrato, sustain, and phrasing is second to none. The only thing I never could get behind is James Dewar's voice. I hate it. I know many people like him but I can't tolerate his style. I saw Trower live ere in Kalamazoo about 5 years ago. He was great but, he had a singer that sounded just like Dewar and I was sitting there listening to the band and caught myself thinking, "Man, I wonder what Trowwer would sound like if he was in a band with a really good singer?" and then I caught myself and started laughing because, he WAS in a band with several really good singers: Procol Harum!
@analogholic_reviews4 күн бұрын
Yes, Chord makes some excellent electronics. The Ultima range is a treat to listen to when I visit his home or the store’s main listening room. Dewar isn’t my favorite vocalist but I enjoy his singing sometimes, especially in the tracks “In this place” & “daydream“.

Thanks again for your excellent review! I have the Elex mk4 and have to agree that the mk4 is slightly nicer sounding than my former, yet excellent Elex r. I am currently running a pair of wonderful sounding Rega RX3's with my mk4...but......I think I should have waited and bought the Ayas....oh well. Still happy with what I'm hearing.

Hi !! I am new to this channel and I'm quite impressed with the speakers shown here ! First, in my opinion, the drivers are one of the best we can find on the planet. Second, the cabinet seem also to be optimised to fit the drivers and the port on the bottom is one of the best configuration to give the best bass. I would have liked to see the crossover, that would have been interesting. Thank you !!!

I was taken by the look of this cabinet. At an estimated cost of 11500.00 US ? HDF cabinet. Highest quality internals, One transducer, one tweeter in its configuration, Veneer. As a person who understands the build complexities of a perfect cabinet, With the knowledge of speaker prices plus crossovers. The cost of high end veneer? You are trying to tap a market of people above my pay grade.

Ribbons can't play low enough to cross over to a 6" inch driver properly, it's a bad design, directivity is probably terrible
@analogholic_reviews10 күн бұрын
There is excellent integration between the drivers and large sweet spot allows for broad seating. I would urge you to listen. It might change your opinion.
@razisn10 күн бұрын
You are quick to judge by principles without considering mitigation factors and the skill of the, sadly late, designer in selecting his compromises. I don't know about the K1 but the D2R with the same tweeter and a different 6.5" mid woofer is crossed over at 2.3KHz which, I believe is lower than some other ribbon 2-ways. The tweeter is recessed in what can be loosely described as a very shallow horn. The same configuration is used with success in all the Response ribbon line plus the K1. The rest of the K line are 3-way floorstanders. ProAc were one of the first manufacturers to put ribbons to good use and they have been doing it for ages. My subjective impressions of the D2R is that it's fine as long as you keep it reasonably away from the side walls or you're using some decent first reflections wall treatment. No such issue at all with floor and ceiling as tweeter vertical dispersion is narrow due to their length. If they (the D2R) do have a problem, this has to do with their elevated upper octave (10-20kHz). This does not really affect this 64 year old and can be easily EQed out if required. You can find a Ken Micallef review and John Atkinson measurements of the D2R in the online site of the well known audiophile magazine.The K1 is better.

Details of the sound should be explained in the context of which amp was being used. It is odd to hear the descriptions when you said you used 3 amps. I'm sure they all cant sound the same. More useful would be how they sounded with each amp. I have an amp and am considering these so that would be the info I would need for myself. Great review and good info. Thx!

I have a 2018 serial number of this new. Matched with a Nagaoka MP-200 and it sounds outstanding. Bettter than my 1200 MK7!!! People who hate this table haven’t heard it with a good cart. The ones 2016 or older had the tone arm bearing issues. Also put a thick mat from a SL-1200GR2 mat and the PLX performs!

I have the Cambridge axr85 and the Yamaha as501, and I'm certain these 2 have a similar comparison and are really too different for any sort of comparison and more about personal preference. To me, it's like comparing a performance auto and a luxury auto in the same price range, both are good at what they are intended to do with that being 2 different things.

II too have the Shelter 901 iii. I started out with the 501 ii about 18 years ago when I began my transition to MC cartridges. Previous I had a Grado Platinum with my VPI Mk iv with an SME IV arm. At the same time I got an Eastern Electric Minimax which I have upgraded and am I very satisfied with. I was floored by the dramatic difference in natural sound and vastly improved articulation of the Shelter and Minimax versus my Grado and mm phono stage. Later I got the 501 iii, and then upgraded to the 901 ii. The Shelter cartridges were quite difficult to source in USA since only Axis and one unpleasant and fancy pants dealer in Chicago sold them. I found a fantastic grey market dealer in HK. who sells sewing machines and from whom I have purchased about a half dozen carts and also my SME arm. Finally I bought a Shelter 901 iii since I lucked into an identical VPI Mk IV table with the TNT platter, SME arm, and standalone motor for an exceptional price. The living room table has the 901 ii with a JLTI and my main set has the 901 iii. In the mean time I got an Airy 3 which was a horrible match for my arm. I am thrilled with the Shelter cartridge with my SME arm and I highly recommend it. I also advise or caution cartridge buyers to carefully research tonearm/cartridge compatibility since I found some cartridges simply don't perform well with some arms and some do. FYI: I do use a sort of spacer since the Airy had a silver spacer they sell for $100. I took a 1964 dime and sanded it smooth, drilled a couple of tiny holes for mounting, and am all set. This adds a small mass to the head of the tonearm. I also played with Frank Van Alstine's old Grado stabilizer bar, and found some improvement but chose to not use it for its lack of convenience.

The PLX1000 tonearm is 2mm SHORTER than the Technics. Therefor some shorter headshell that fit Technics won't fit PLX1000. This also means that Ortofon Concorde cartridges won't be long enough for certain alignment.

I own both of those amps along with about a dozen more. The Yamaha will blow the Cambridge away hands down. I also have dozens of speakers and never did the Cambridge come close to the yamaha. The Cambridge axa35 is just plain dull and lifeless compared to the Yamaha. That Yamaha is the best bang for the buck amp you can buy for the price. It doesn't compare to my Hegel or Mcintosh amps but for the price... no brainer.
