I have spent months with the Yamaha AS-301 & now the Cambridge AXA35. The Cambridge is way out in front of the Yamaha. The Cambridge is connected to a pair of B&W DM602-S2s. It has also done buisnes with a pair of Klipsch RP-600M lls. I find the Rp600s to be a bit bright at times when driven by a Marantz PM6007. Bright to the point of being fatiguing. I know it is not a problem with the Marantz or the Klipsch..it’s me and my ears, the sound i prefer. Without writing a book, the Cambridge sounds warm and rich, just beautiful front top to bottom. It is the Integrated amp that will have a lot of people saying that they just found the sound they have dreamed of for years. I will always want more & more gear..i love the research and all that goes with it, but i really have no reason to look beyond the AXA35. I have been an audiophile for about 25 years now. I have not been this happy with a new component in 15 years.

Bought a at-lp2022 which comes with the clear version of this cartridge, and it replaced a goldring 1042. I was severely impressed by the low noise of my system and the detail and musicality. I think it's extraordinary value for the money, specifically because you can buy replacement stylus for 150 euros. I'm not sayin this is the best cartridge for 250 euros, but sure is the best 500 cartridge I've heard. !

First time viewer and I like your reviews. Am an analog guy myself. I've never heard Chord products myself, but have always been curious. You mention brands like Luxman, ARC, Manley and that's high praise. How does the sound of the Ultima compare to the these other tubey sounding amps? From what I hear from you, it sounds like the Chord maybe a bit analytical and could possibly be a bit bright for tube guys like myself. What do you think?

No doubt the Rega Planar 1 is a fine turntable. Arguably, its primary competition is the Pro-Ject T2 and Debut EVO 2 Turntable, the Music Hall Classic & MMF-2.3SE Turntables and the underrated Fluance RT85 turntable. Only a direct comparison could determine the "best" one in that pricing category and the 'winner' would likely be system dependent. Add in personal preference in the priority of audio attributes and we arrive at the 'Gordian Knot' of audio.

After 18 years and many of my own speakers (18 pairs if you count just what I've owned - I've listened to many more) , I have finally settled on Proac. I no longer have the upgrade bug, or wonder what could sound better. This is within reason and budget off course, but I found some pre-owned ones at a great price. I listen to live music often, and offcourse matching that is a cazy task but the Proacs sound the most realistic within my requirements, with the largest genre of music. Thanks for the great review!

The integrity of Rega's reputation rests upon offering real improvements in each pricing category. The clarity of improvements is system dependent. A $3-5k system is unlikely to clearly reveal the improved fidelity of the top Rega turntables and cartridges. Rock's electronic instrumentation does present a barrier to discerning improvements in fidelity but as jazz uses acoustic instruments, when the system synergy and qualities permit, improvements in fidelity are easily discerned.

As always, nice review. You're running the same cart and speakers as my brother. He's running an upgraded ProJect setup that cost about 40% more than this. I like my set-up with a similarly more expensive Rega P3 better than his by a bit. I'm not sure if this TT and these carts match or are more cost effective than what we're used to. I'm just incredibly happy to hear that JBL is getting back to trying to maximize quality for price. TT wise I'm a sucker for Rega and similarly engineered items that minimize mass and maximize rigidity, use of inertia differential and consistency. For MM carts under $1000 it's hard for me to argue with ATs VM 750 or 760, the Hana SL, or the dynavector 10x5. At a pay 10-30% of the value of your turntable for the cart equation that a lot of newcomers are comfortable with, just buy a Goldring E3 IMO. That said I'm running a dynavector DV Xx on a Rega P3 so my cart cost about $800 more than my TT.

Thank you for this video, so happy that you compared to the two Peachtrees. I have been very happy with my 220SE, but it has some issues and I am considering Elek Mk4 or rather the Elicit Mk5. I am also tempted by the Yamaha receiver NR 2000a, have you heard that one? When I first got into this hobby, I went over to a guy's house to check out some OHM Walsh 4000s. He was driving them with some very nice Pass Labs amplification. I don't remember what his streamer was. I don't stream, so that gear doesn't make much impression upon me. Anyway, I requested he play Ziggy Stardust, which he did, and it sounded awful! Other stuff he streamed sounded great, but I was crushed that one of my all-time favourite albums sounded bad on good equipment. That experience still haunts me.

@analogholic_reviews well, the revealing gear revealed what is fundamentally a very thin-sounding recording. But, it was bad to the point of me not wanting to listen to it. As a dealer for the brand, I feel the AE509 and the whole 500 series is very under-rated. If people make sure to feed them pretty powerful high quality amplification, they're shockingly good. From what I can tell online, many do not provide enough electronics to really let them shine. Use something like a Hegel H190 or higher and they'll surprise a lot of people.

@@coytebryson3059oh that’s a tough one, sir. Warmer sounding speakers like the Harbeth, Spendor models might add the color and warmth you seek. I would chose the AXA-35,if only because of the design.Have a pair of Triangle Borea iii speakers( 90 db sensitivity), Bluesound Node 2i streamer. And.. the amp i a tiny Aiyima D03( with a 36 volt adapter). It sounds surprisingly good/warm/full, without being dull. And..(didn't expected that), intern dac of the tiny Aiyima sounds better than the intern dac of the Bluesound! I'm considering buying the AXA-35, here in the Netherlands about €400,- now, new. Yes, i've a small room, about 30m2, but high ceiling(better for the sound , bad for the heating costs). Ohh..i just coneected a SMSL-SU-1 dac between Node2i and the Aiyima D03..and it sounds even better!! Unbelievable! I read the reviews about this tiny cheap dac and yes.. i am 100% in agree!! For €80,-. Haha..don't think i need the Cambridge AXA anymore. But..maybe i will! it's not expensive. Of course i don't know how long the Aiyima will keeping running. Often runs all afternoon/evening and night. At night at low volume of course. And at last..of course there are differences in audio-equipment quality. But it's "all" about the mastering (the quality) in the studio, or live recording, That was already the case in the analogue era. And..room-acoustics!! Very very important. Hahaa..forgot to mention..i've also a fully restored Sansui AU-317. Souns amazing!! But yeahh..no remote and a little heavy and the look is nothing like the nice modern looks of the Cambridge of course. But soundwise..great amp, the AU-317, absolute. And as we all know..the hunt for the perfect sound is a never ending story… Sorry for the long long story..

You have been bitten by the Chord Electronics bug, eh? You mentioned before that Rob has a top-of-the-line Chord Electronics set-upon his house that is really impressive and I wondered when you'd start reviewing their stuff. Also, Robin Trower is a great guitarist. His vibrato, sustain, and phrasing is second to none. The only thing I never could get behind is James Dewar's voice. I hate it. I know many people like him but I can't tolerate his style. I saw Trower live ere in Kalamazoo about 5 years ago. He was great but, he had a singer that sounded just like Dewar and I was sitting there listening to the band and caught myself thinking, "Man, I wonder what Trowwer would sound like if he was in a band with a really good singer?" and then I caught myself and started laughing because, he WAS in a band with several really good singers: Procol Harum!

Yes, Chord makes some excellent electronics. The Ultima range is a treat to listen to when I visit his home or the store’s main listening room. Dewar isn’t my favorite vocalist but I enjoy his singing sometimes, especially in the tracks “In this place” & “daydream“.
