The interviewer looks very much like Rolf Harris and it's really off-putting.

Loved seeing this. Every few years I get on a Crowded House kick again (I'm on one of 'em now, in fact!) These songs seem timeless to me. Just love 'em...

I was front row for Crowded House at Mississippi Nights in St Louis 30ish years ago and one thing that struck me about Nick was how ultra smooth he was on that bass---his fingers gliding note to note like magic. Also I remember a bottle of vodka being thrown, yes, thrown back and forth amongst the band members that night. Possibly it was someones birthday though I dont recall for sure. The boys were quite funny that night, and especially Mr Hester, who is still sorely missed by many. Some lucky fan standing next to me got to get up and sing the entirety of Better Be Home Soon and I was so jealous it hadnt been me. He did a fantastic job though. Crowded House in a smaller venue is like going to a party at Neils house.....everyone feels intimately involved.....it's like a drunken family reunion. God bless Crowded House.

The first time I ever heart Crowded house and still today I knew they were the most sophisticated songwriters ever. What I am saying is that if music and melody was a cup of water then they are an overflowing cup of water compared to about anyone else.

Regarding "Better Be Home Soon" starting as a soul song and ending up kind of country-ish: Any fan of Chris Stapleton knows that country and soul can easily be kissin' cousins.

Neil Finn is one of my guitar heroes...most of my guitar influences are strong melodic rhythm players...I discovered after years of playing, that all the time I was using up learning solos, I could be playing a song. Once I got over the ego element of trying to play solo parts of songs, I felt liberated. I realised I have always been drawn to the percussiveness of rhythm guitar parts.

It's beautiful how perfectly their voices harmonise. My favourite band since the 80s!
@butting23 Жыл бұрын
Both Finns are incredible harmonisers. The best harmonies I heard in my life were at one of Tim's album launches, upstairs pub on Dominion Rd, Neil jumped up with him for a couple of songs. Just the two of them, each with a Maton, and the harmonies... out of this world. Can be easy to forget that one of the things that set Crowded House apart were how incredibly well Nick and Hessie matched that: as a trio, CH were as good as the two brothers who'd been doing it from childhood. Have a glorious memory from the second CH tour: end of the song they held "Better be home..." and then paused. All of Founders sang back "SOOOOON" with a delicious cacophony, notes all over the place, and then when everyone was done: Neil, Nick, and Hessie bring it back in, just the one word to finish with, where it should have been, exactly on pitch, achingly beautiful, magically pure. So very very good. (one hell of a night, that: Paul Ubana Jones, Schnell Fenster, Crowded House, and then an unbilled Split Enz reunion. damn, that was a good one.)
@pubbets7290 Жыл бұрын
@@butting23 that would have been amazing! I saw one of the Enz reuninon tours in Brisbane - would have been early 2000s I think.. Not sure of the exact date. Definitely a life-affirming moment! I discovered Split Enz in 1987 as a very awkward teenager and became OBSESSED right through till my early 20s. I still love the music today, but that period I was totally in love with the whole Split Enz vibe. Every piece of art, every school project, every story and poem was based on the Enz output! Some day I'd love to meet Neil and Tim and tell them 'thank you' for saving my life in that difficult stage. I'd also love to do the same to Peter who ran the fan club back then. I was a subscriber and it was like Christmas whenever a package or letter arrived from Friends of the Enz.

I remember, many or even too many years ago i found a video of Neil Finn, performing "Don't dream it's over" all alone on a stage big enough for 3 headliners... all alone with 1 acoustic guitar and a realky great song. Over the years i lost the link, but the memory of this will never go away!
