Hi Sonia I’m curious to know more about the scope of practice involved with swallowing assessments. As a long term care dietitian, usually we have the SLP screen the residents for any potential swallowing issues. Typically, if the resident comes in with a hx of dysphagia, cerebral infraction, etc they are screened right away. I always ask if a resident has chewing/swallowing issues with IDT or residents. If so, I will always refer them to speech therapy.

Anyone watching this in 2024 in the US: as of January 1st, 2024 in order to become a registered dietician you need to complete a masters degree that is ACEND-accredited as well as having over 1000 hours of dietetic internship to take the board exam and become a registered dietician.

I thought SLPs do the swallowing assessments?
@soniadunutrition7 ай бұрын
SLPs do, but RDs are taught to conduct these assessments as well. And depending on the place, RDs and SLPs conduct it together, or RDs conduct it alone due to the state of the healthcare system present.

So, your manly upset that you aren't as good at marketing as Dr Hyman's team and that his message is hitting home with people. Oh, and I can't believe you mentioned calcium from dairy, now that's and industry that knows how to market, they haven't spent any money for years on convincing people that there is calcium in dairy, (also because it's a lot harder to lie in marketing these days) but they still have even trained dietitians supporting their claims of calcium in dairy.

Hi, I am a soon-to-be-Senior and am thinking of going into Nutrition. I have always been interested in food and love to put good food in my body that will help it perform its best. Is this information still relevant today and are there any other bits of advice you would add to this video? With all that being said, this was an interesting and well informed video. Thank you for the help!
@soniadunutrition7 ай бұрын
I think this video is still pretty relevant. The only thing I would add here is to think broadly about the career too. There are a lot of traditional roles present but eventually you may be someone who wants more, thus it's great to remain open to ideas and opportunities and build those soft skills and know how to sell those skills as transferable.

I have a doubt... I have completed my Bachelor in ECE and currently working in IT job for 3 years. I wish to do Masters in Clinical Nutrition Do you think that's possible? And if so would the pay be good or really low as my Bachelor is another stream ?
@soniadunutrition7 ай бұрын
Can I confirm what ECE stands for? I believe most or all of the masters of clinical nutrition programs require you to have had a bachelors in nutrition/dietetics. It's a very niche masters so it's likely not open to everyone. The pay I can't say for sure, since honestly both IT and RD roles can vary. I believe IT may earn more.

Hi! My question is whether you are happy with the career, or would you do something else if you could go back to highschool and decide again? If so, what? I'm currently applying for masters in dietetics, and I'm so afraid I might regret it later, even though I've wanted this for the past 5 years (: it might just be last minute nerves though.
@soniadunutrition7 ай бұрын
I don't think I would do anything different -- there was honestly nothing else I wanted to study for 4 years. The only thing I would add is to think more broadly and maybe see if it's possible for a minor (ex. business). There may come a time where you want to expand on your responsibilities and tasks, thus it's great to remain open to opportunities and build a diverse skillset!

Hi Sonia, I've seen how helpful you've been to so many people here, that's so very kind of you. Could you please guide me too? I completed my bachelors in Food Science and Nutrition. The NHS decided to change the norms from the very year and have made a masters degree compulsory for future dietitians. Can I become a dietitian with a one-year masters degree in Nutritional Sciences? Followed by an internship ofcourse, but does this masters degree qualify? Or do they only accept a two-year masters in Nutrition and Dietetics?
@soniadunutrition7 ай бұрын
Is the NHS the UK? I wasn't able to find info regarding the need for Masters. I would confirm with the specific College or regulatory body for where you're living. In the US I know they've begun this but those who have become an RD before the law came into effect were grandfathered in so you may be the same depending on the when the law will come into effect.

Typically from high school your basic science courses, math, and English. Then in the actual program they'll set it out for you -- more science courses, some math courses, then moving on to the specific human nutrition courses.

I had a dietitian that scared the 💩 outta me and I HATED seeing her!!! I think that’s where a little bit of my ptsd came from. She told me if I didn’t straighten up, I’d be dead at 21. In my head, I screamed (excuse my language😅) b*tch!!! I’m 38 now and my A1C is 6.7 and I so badly wanna rub it in her face and tell her she was dead wrong for that and how she needed to be patient with a child dealing with an adult issue. I couldn’t stand that woman 😡😡😡😡

I’m sorry you had that experience! Healthcare professionals have their own methods (and I hoped she meant well), but for sure this particular scare tactic can be more harmful than helpful, as you’ve experienced.

Hm, I've never heard of this until you mentioned it. Just with a quick search it's not giving me much, so best bet would be to email the specific College and request more information, especially on what constitutes a practical exam and MMI (interview). The knowledge exam is likely similar to a typical exam for RDs

I related SO MUCH with the grade 11 part, where you don't know which major you want to pick. I've been obssessed with food for over a year and I didn't even realize, I've seen all the health problems my family went through. I actually am interested in helping people live better lives by eating healthier. I also get the expanding knowledge part, I do want to be a fitness instructor. I even track my diet, nutrition, intake, what type of foods I eat, and all of that stuff. But the only problems I have are: I have no knowledge of biology or chemistry, and I SUCK at talking to people. Overall, very well thought out video and super detailed 👍

@@FR0ZTi_ @jaclyn0418 Hi! I'm just finishing my bachelors in sport nutrition now, and applying to masters in dietetics - and i am also horrible at talking to people lol. I still struggle with presentations and interviews, but I'm hoping to learn and refine that skill as i go through masters and enter the work force. I volunteer on the side to further develop my social awkwardness. As for biology, you can teach yourself certain things; such as anatomy, nutrients, and the body's systems; and there's not tooo much chemistry in here YET tbh.

The total cost was probably a bit different from how it is now but it seems as though right now the tuition is $11k per year (4.5yrs cause of internship), living expenses, food, travel (depending on where you live), textbooks (couple hundred $). I would highly recommend you ask the particular schools if they have an estimate

Dairy calcium is far inferior to vegetable calcium. Cow milk is meant for calves. Glutin causes inflammation and fiber from whole grains is unnecessary when you are eating 75% fruits and vegetables. And yes bad on Healthcare as nutrition is best medicine but that's not really taught in med school.
