this was the third time Libyan planes interacted with US Navy planes, 1981 and then 1986...I was on the way back from the Barents Sea in 1981 on a US sub and we got orders to the Mediterranean Sea, thought we were going to war!..after the shoot down things cooled off and we headed back to the US...

So - the "fox 1" is a sparrow missile which was actually fired by the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer - aka the back seat guy), not the pilot. The pilot of the 2nd F-14 is actually the one going "oh jesus". The first two sparrows (fox-1) actually miss and fail to track. (The first went dumb when the 2nd fired and the 2nd failed to lock on and missed) the third Fox-1 is the kill shot - and then the 2nd kill is when the pilot realized he had the wrong weapon selected and fixed it - then you hear the sidewinder (Fox-2) growl - indicating he has a lock. Also worth noting the ALPHA - BRAVO - Weapons Hold - Yellow - command was an Admiral on the Carrier - ordering them NOT TO FIRE. However the Rules of Engagement at the time stated that if you were jinxed into 4 or more times by the "enemy" you could fire. In this case - you can hear the lead RIO going "He's jinxed into me again - that's 3, 4 and 5 times" so in his and his pilot's mind they were clear to arm (Master Arm - done by the pilot) and then the RIO fired the 2 sparrow missiles. (The RIO could fire the Sparrow and Phoenix without the pilot - the pilot could fire any of the 4 main weapons - with or without the RIO)

@@TheButcherClan Its politics man, google the 1989 Libyan conflict. The TLDR is that Mig-23s are all that the Libyans had, and Gaddafi wanted to push for control of the Gulf, and the US Navy wasn't having it. I'm sure the pilots weren't wild about going up against a Tomcat in a Mig-23, but when the commander tells you to scramble, you don't have a lot of options.

@@TheButcherClan The MiG-23 and F-14 were introduced around the same time. The F-14 had it's first flight in 1970, and was introduced in 1974. The MiG-23 had it's first flight in 1967 and was introduced in 1970. The Soviets were just terrible at making planes.

The RIO (Steve) in Gypsy 207 and I flew together as Army Aviators in 1969. It appears that Steve set the tone and standard for this successful engagement. He was a good Army pilot and who apparently became a really good NFO.

If only there was a way yo pressurize the cockpit and male special suits to keep you alive at the mach8.8 would be awsome to be able to send a human down that sled trackk in order to possibly make hypersonic space craft so we can fly put of our solar system going mach 8-10 and not take 15 years but woild take more like half a year or so i know thats a stretch but maybe one day we will send a human to another solar system at hypersonic speeds or even speed of light
