You could also divide both dides by 3 to get 2x+1 = -1 and then slove for x. 2x=-2 x=-1 This method is quicker to do mentally

"Every straight line is going to be in the form y = mx + b" is an unhelpful rule when you consider the existence of point-slope form. And having x in the denominator is unhelpful when you consider that (y-b)/x = m is just as valid. On an exam asking students to identify the equations of straight lines without graphing them, I would certainly expect these sorts of questions. The rule should properly be explained as "every straight line can be written in the form y=mx+b".

Or just multiply both sides by 2 (which would be 6x+4=22) Then you subtract both sides by 4 (6x=18) Then divide both sides by 6 (x=3)

That’s another good way to do it! I actually realized as I was editing that that probably would have been easier 😂 but either way knowing how to split up fractions is a good skill to have 🤷🏻♂️

y=-1x+5? subtract x from both sides to create a slope-intercept equation
@numbernerdmath11 күн бұрын
I know it can be confusing because "xy" doesn't have any sign, but when there's no sign that means it's multiplication! So the only way to move it to the other side is division, not subtraction.

It's definitely a more basic version of some of the problems on the SAT, but it's important because it is the basis for almost all the other problems!

5:32 Small correction: the SAT gives you a list of geometry formulas (which is basically every formula), but does not include algebra formulas, so it would help if you have the quadratic formula memorized! And if you don’t, just search up a version of the quadratic formula song and it will be seared into your brain for the rest of your life. Let me know if you have any questions about the SAT!
