So this is where Marge Simpson got it from! Any other movies like this one or The Ten Commandments have an intro like this one (where either the star or director in Ten Commandments case comes out from behind curtains and speaks to the audience about the upcoming show)? Does it even have a name?

Tenía 12 años cuando la vi y fue la escena que más me dio miedo, seguido en el bosque y las huellas de los cascos del demonio en el suelo!! Uffff hoy 2024 aún me da miedo

If I saw this in theaters back in 1957: I would be terrified. Seeing a still image of that demon running through the forest is freaky.

An absolutely brilliant movie . The closing scene , simplicity in itself , adds to the overarching sense of menace.

I first watched this years ago on my first night alcohol free for two years. That bit at the end when the ventriloquist dummy stands up made me absolutely shit myself. You dont need gore for a hood horror movie. Tremendous

More than a horror film it seems like a science fiction film in the style of King Kong or Godzilla.

Watching this in the 1980s at 2 am on a 9 inch b&w television-- bad audio and all -- made this movie a true (but brilliant) nightmare. This is such a brilliant anthology movie; perhaps the very best.

When first watched as a child movie gave me nightmares. Outer Limits Children of Spider County was the worst horror of my life. Cause lifelong insecurity in public speaking. Kent Smith made a splendid monster.

I maintain the scariest element of this entire movie isn’t Hugo being alive and evil, but Maxwell being tragically emotionally bound to him. Maxwell clearly loves this twisted creature beyond all reason, so Hugo assumes he can get away with inflicting any torture he wants. At 2:43, for the first time Hugo feels the power balance shift as he sees the rage in Maxwell’s face, and tries to backpedal but it’s too late. Still, even as Maxwell suffocates Hugo, he holds him close and caresses him. And when Maxwell finally snaps it’s not after almost killing a human being who showed him compassion, but only after he destroyed the thing that deliberately ruined his life. In the hospital he appears to be in a state of shock from grief, and probably guilt. I believe Hugo did not truly possess Maxwell, but Maxwell spoke in Hugo’s voice and became a “dummy” in an attempt to bring him back, even though it meant losing himself entirely. What a powerful combination of conflicting emotions. This segment broke my heart.

What makes it even more incredible is all the people piled up in the door on the right, so if you're looking over there you don't notice (or at least I didn't) him standing up at first! Genuinely made me jump

Amazing for the time. This was Michael Balcon’s answer to Universal Horror movies of the 30s and a gamble for Ealing that ultimately backfired but is considered a master piece today. Paved the way for Hammer Horror for sure.

My favourite post war movie, way ahead of it's time, Michael Redgrave as the unhinged ventriloguist and his dummy Hugo was a spectacular piece of short story telling in a 5 set movie, still great today.

I once had a nightmare about a ventriloquist dummy with a similar feel to this film It was black and white and the dummy was sat on a table talking to a man doing electrical repair on a wall. He thought it was a prank and went along with it Then the dummy raises itself up onto its legs like it was levitating, and its voice became very deep and aggressive "I'M ME!! I AM ME!!" It screamed It then produced a gun and shot the man dead Its words have haunted me ever since

Wonderful distant effect. People from the school of theater have this talent. The closeup should either be 8 times darker with more noir lighting and fog, or not at all. Hitting the pole with it's consequences was great.

(2:55) In the original story, Silvester Kee was a nice guy, Maxwell (Hugo's original master) is the creepy one and Hugo is the creepier one. Here Silvester Kee is Hugo's master and is creepy, although Hugo is still creepier.
