You have completely missed the point of the sound on sound review, at the end he mentions that if the original Auratone design had been followed faithfully, they would still be extremely useful. That’s the problem. So while I agree the new design isn’t as useful as the narrow focus of the original 80s versions of you have the origins 80s versions you can use them for very specific fine tuning. Listen to any 70s classic on pair of Jbl 4311s and you will likely hear the intended final studio mix. Would I get another single driver cube monitor for my final mix? Mixing for a pair of Apple headphones probably makes more sense but what self respecting engineer wants to do that.

Good discussion on the Behringer stuff. I'm not a fanboi of the brand, but there's no question that if you buy their more expensive gear, it tends to punch far above its weight. I have a UMC204HD audio interface and I think the Midas preamps are fine. The only real downfall of the unit is its metering, which is just two LEDs (signal and clipping), but even then the noise floor is low enough that it hasn't proven to be a problem.

Regarding crowd funding cs “working for it”, I understand what Mark means, but I’d like to invite you to think of it slightly differently. You have given us a wealth of information and entertainment on this platform, and you have fostered a wonderful community both here and on discord. You’ve done so, and will continue to do so without asking anything in return. That all required no small amounts of work on your part. Crowd funding even a part of this project would allow us to say thank you for all that work, allow us to feel like we were part of building this incredible dream studio, and possibly allow us to experience the studio even sooner. You could even have a wall with our names on it!

Why dont you ask for crowd funding from your subscribers via patreon or something? If everyone who subscribed to the channel gave you £40, that would be £1.92m and you could in return give them a set of in depth videos on the patreon showing how you go through the building process etc. etc.

If we can reach that many people then that’s definitely an option worth some heavy research! Thanks for the suggestion!

Mark and James we have met at your place and I wish you well with this plan. You seem to have a good following and crowdfunding has to be considered. It’s not begging. Musical instruments are crowdfunding so it’s already acceptable in your sector. You could easily give back by documenting the progress etc etc.

I had a fantastic experience with an online course, the one run by Per Bristow about signing with freedom. He has many courses similar to this one, and he is very knowledgeable. I only had expieriance with the singing one for only the first month or two from a yearly plan. Never felt like I regretted it. It all depends on the content, how good it is. He also runs one on one sessions if you want it. Amazing stuff really. Nothing scummy about it. There are other courses where indeed it’s scummy, but again it depends on the content.

This is the second time watching this, as I've yet to decide upon my first _proper_ studio monitors. (I'm slumming it with a crap 2.1 multimedia setup.) With your evaluation that the 8" setup works better as mid-field monitors, it could be the FX50 would work better as near-fields. I don't know enough audio physics to know whether the ratio of the tweeter wave guide to woofer size on the FX50 would make for less or more smearing though. Due to the tendency towards distortion, I imagine both the FX80 and FX50 kit would work better with a sub and HPF engaged to reduce the lows the amps need to process. The search continues.

As a studio service tech that works on vintage consoles around the world I never recommend short run or highly custom consoles to my clients unless they are supported by a well known company that at least provides parts...many of the old desks I service require custom made parts to replace old switches and pots etc etc that have started failing...the 5088 is the best sounding and one of the best supported ones currently in production, in my opinion of course.

A little earlier today, I took a client song and duplicated the project. Opened it and changed it to use the Dolby Atmos renderer and _without even doing anything else_ I could already hear the instrumentation in my cans quite differently. That was very much unexpected. BBC SO seems to like this.

Fun video, thanks! I just switched to Logic Pro and purchased this control surface (after returning the Nectar CS12). It is PERFECT for what I want to do with it. Build quality is better than expected...time will tell. Notes: 1.) The automatic install did not work correctly. After deleting the automatically added surface and manually adding a new "mackie mcu pro" it works like a dream. 2.) They may have upgraded the components. The encoders feel great, the slider is quiet and smooth. 3.) The overlays are a thick plastic with 3M double sided tape to secure them if you choose.

Interesting discussion. I had a serious problem with Logic (10.7.9 on Monterey) recently where if I bounced my master out to WAV, one of the MIDI instruments muted part-way through the track. I spent days trying to figure out what was going on and never solved it. Bouncing to AIF works fine. Go figure. Alas, when I'm delivering a final master to a client who isn't on a Mac (most of them), they prefer WAV over AIF. I guess I'll have to have a look at Studio One since one of my clients is toying with the idea of making their next game in Unreal Engine, which supports Atmos.

Interesting. In my case, I'm doing a lot of strings via Spitfire's BBC Symphony Orchestra. There are so many different voices in the instrumentation that the only way to be productive is to have a strings template that I can load for writing and recording these compositions. That said, though, if I'm just doing a rock, pop or other non-strings track, the template stays unloaded and we just build up the tracks from scratch.
