Oh wow I think this was from a fantastic soul show that aired on Channel 4 for a while - they had some truly incredible performers on there such as Tremaine Hawkins, Shirley Murdoch etc - it was amazing to see - introduced me to artists I'd never heard of.

I'm pretty sure this gig was at S.O.B.s in New York, the credits on the end show that it was a record company (Zomba) production but the pictures are quite different from the BBC's version broadcast as part of their "In Concert" series (1970s) which I have on VHS. I would love to have a digital recording of the whole performance which was truly Epic!

@@jaycooper2624 Hi Jay, My VHS recording comes from a late night broadcast on ITV as there are commercial breaks between the songs but I think I remember seeing it on the BBC as an ‘In Concert’ show. I wondered if there were other songs not broadcast to make way for the ads but Zomba don’t seem to have released this as a VHS at the time. Cheers

@@chambersofhourrors9393 I didn't know that ITV broadcast the gig, my VHS is definitely the BBC version (introduced by Annie Nightingale) and different picturewise from the one featured here although both enjoy excellent audio quality. I have a VHS player, but haven't yet been able to connect it up to my "Smart" TV ( no scarts these days LOL!) but I'm determined to watch my recording again before I kick the bucket (77 and still going). Back in the day I played it many, many times to fellow music lovers and it was always well received. Unfortunately my memory doesn't stretch to all the songs featured although I'm sure that the first number was "Serafina". "Pula Ea Na (its raining)" is also on it as well as "Motla Le Pula - The Rain Maker". As I remember it, the broadcast was not very long and apart from "Don't Go Lose It Baby" probably doesn't include more than A.N. other. I think the performance was used as a promo for the "Techno-Bush" LP and single "Don't Go etc." . BTW, I worked for BBC radio for many years and interviewed Hugh twice and when I moved into television, I filmed him for Central TV, coincidentally the day Nelson Mandela was released! I saw him live more than a dozen times over the years and spent many enjoyable hours in his company, a Great Guy full of wit and humour and deeply knowledgeable, the world of music is much the poorer for his passing. BTW2, If I can manage to view my VHS I'll endeavour to communicate the set list to you. Regards.

Somewhere in the depths of my collection, I have a VHS off-air recording of Hugh Masekela live at S.O.B.s (Sounds Of Brazil) in New York which was broadcast by the BBC as part of their "In Concert" series in the late 1970s. Lack of a VHS player means that I haven't viewed it for many years but I believe that this number could well be from that performance which, believe me is Superb!. Certainly the stage wear of the artists is identical and the sight of the Late Great Barney Rachabane on Sax clinches it for me. I have dreamed about getting a DVD of the whole show which, unusually, is not to be found on YT. My VHS copy is only a part of the performance and begins with "Serafina" and ends with an absolute "Tour De Force" rendition of "Don't Go Lose It Baby" with the Mother and Father of solos from Barney and Hugh that will take you into the Stratosphere! BTW, Back in my Broadcasting days I saw Hugh live on a dozen occasions, interviewed him 3 times for Radio and filmed him for TV - A beautiful guy, full of wit and humour and possessed of a deep intelligence he is truly missed.

At the time Chaka should use SEQUENCER. Coz the music sounds "empty" not full! Or in 1985 sequencer technology was not matured yet? Fortunately the voice of Chaka covered the music arrangement! 😄😄😄
