Lionel will not top 10 in Kona. He will bleed time to the front throughout the race - swim, bike and run… even T1 and T2 (his transitions are so slow).

Former D1 swimmer here. Sam Long could use some high level instruction to adjust his stroke and then to take the time to swim slower with a new stroke for a year and we will see real change. There appear to be a few very simple things he could adjust to be so much better. He doesn’t get the full extension of his stroke in either direction. His elbow starts down every pull creating a situation where his hand and forearm are pointed up effectively stepping on a brake. He doesn’t finish his stroke, he pulls out his hand at his waist instead of pushing it all the way through to his thigh. These are all very common triathlete issues. I really wish I could tell him how much I like him and want him to do better in the swim and how easy it could be with a few tweaks. Easy for me to say as a former sub-elite swimmer of course.

Pulling for KB, hope he is ready for heat and doesn’t cramp. Frankfurt had mild weather. Sam and Magnus going to partner on bike and put pressure on. Several longshots with nothing to lose could pull upset. Looks to be windy and hot, wonder who rides the wind the best?

It seems rather counterintuitive for two agents and/or sports managers to dismiss an entire upcoming generation of short course triathletes. Try Vasco Vilaca, Ricardo Batista, Tim Hellwig, Csonger Lehman, Dylan McCullough, Miguel Hidalgo,Lisa Tersch, Maria Tome, Fanny Salazai.

PTO with WT is better simply because I think the best thing for the sport would be if IM goes bust. Having a for-profit entity, whose actions clearly show that money is more important than athletes, basically having a monopoly on LD triathlon is a very sorry situation. Actually it's worse than a 'normal' monopoly as the IM brand is so powerful that nobody will go anywhere else, basically ever. PTO/WT buys the brand from the receivers/IM and then local races come back, competing with each other and licensing the IM name if they chose. PTO/WT runs the LD world for the benefit of the athletes, finally! One can but hope 🤞😅

Not taking anything away from Taylor who I started watching when She was riding a tarmac with her Mom's wheels riding away from her competitors. But Julie really put on a show, so hard for me understand why She would not immediately be at the top of the Wild Card list for next race. Good podcast. Yep, hard to believe that the supertri guys coming after Yee and Wilde could be possibly faster. However, when you think that Wilde is a 13.23 5k track and Yee similar, are the next generation really coming through, lower or breaking 13? They’d be in their national track team for the Olympics. So I think we are on the cusp now with these guys.

I find it something different entirely to make "big swings" about something in your sport, like winning olympics and Kona, or maybe winning all 4 Tennis Grand Slams, to saying to win the greatest achievement at a completely different sport like the Tour de France. Maybe it was a PR gag, but then it was a bad one, because it was disrespectful to the cyclists. I'll give Kristian credit for his new announcement, because winning gold in the olympics is much harder than winning Kona, yet alone because the chance only presents only once every 4 years. And he has shown that he can train short distance and win long distance races at the same time. But all together, concerning long distance he has a long way to go to be among the best (if he wants to). There are several athletes, who won a handful long distances in 2-3 years, but there are very few, who won 10 races in 10 years. Yes, you can't compare those two things qualitative, each achivement is valid and valuable of its own, but the GOATs are people like Phelps, Bolt, Frodeno, Isinbayeva and Duplantis. If Blummenfelt wins another gold in LA he will be added to this list. But the hype around him in the tri scene is greater than his achievements, that's for sure.

Hear you about the IM Pro series races, not much different for T100. When I am able to watch the IM (because the time zones line up) those infernally repeating ads are annoying. My biggest desire is to have better progress graphics. Frequently I have to join part way because I cannot rewind and watch from the start. T100 I rewind on KZbin. The progress graphics and current placing rarely seem to help me understand where things are at in the race. Many times it takes 30 or more minutes to figure out what is happening.

Think Yee and Wilde moved the bar on run and KB couldn’t get quite get there, especially given his muscle memory for slower IM pace probably detracted from his short end speed + age. Vincent Luis also lost a half gear too. Both remarkable athletes. Hope KB has a solid Kona.

Blummenfelt "smashed long course for a couple of years"? He won a Ironman with an irregular swim, another with no mentionable competitors except for Kienle and got 3rd on Hawaii. It's obviously a good performance, but WAY far from "smashed". His victory in Frankfurt was impressive, but he has many more to go until we can compare him with Kienle or Lange or al-Sultan or 20 other athletes of the past 20 years. Blummenfelt is a hype, due to his social media appearence with his trainer and his methods, nothing else. Until now. He has everything in his arsenal to become a great athlete (except for humility). If he won Paris, he would be history. But he didn't.

Look at the records of Faris al-Sultan, who surely isn't one of the greatest, first row athletes. He won double as many Ironmans as Blummenfelt, over double or triple the timespan. I'm not saying Blummenfelt is a noob, but he has yet to prove himself. And also victories alone don't make great athletes, but a professional, humble attitude.

Triathlon is boring as a spectator. Yet cycling fans plan months ahead where and how to position themselves on a mountain stage. Only to glimps the riders for seconds. The triathlon commentary remains very American in its nature. There is too much craziness and over the top comments and after 30 min theres still 7 hours to go. Triathlon is still stuck in this hero shit where as other sports have matured and moved past that. Maybe just take on good commentators and not neccesarily retired athletes.

I guess it’s fine to use Lionel’s name as clickbait but Jezus inform yourselves at least: 1) run course wasn’t flat, it started with 10k trail up and down a steep hill and afterwards still had elevation 2) Lionel and Talbot confirmed he was not running at his max, and even did some “intervals” at the end of the run 3) Talbot was giving everyone on the course live splits so main players knew where they stood 4) Lionel AND Sam pushed career best watts (though Lionel technically equaled what he had done in Florida before). Doesn’t mean you’re not right on his Kona placing (seems realistic) but still

Been here emotionally. I've been doing triathlon for almost 20 years. My opinion is that you'll never compete for AG award or KQ if you don't draft. Athletes have been blatantly drafting for decades and there's no way to manage it in an IM race with thousands of participants. I'm a slower swimmer so I get to see how much drafting there is especially on flat courses. Even the pro's cheat as we saw in London and heard the complaints. If you're not willing to "cheat" and want a fair race you'll have to pick the course wisely. The more hills and technical course will offer the best outcomes. A flat course, well you're fucked if you get out of the water late and have an issue with drafting. The way the rules are written for AG are you can only get caught cheating twice and clubs/teams and those willing to risk penalties are going to do what it takes for that KQ or AG award.

LS in Kona, maybe top 10. I wonder to what extent his popularity deceives him into thinking he is 'on the right path', again. His inability to swim with the front pack will require him to push 330w the entire bike rather than the 3 1/2 hours in Penticton, after which he will run 10-15 minutes slower than the winners. And he still does not have his nutrition settled. I think that his addictive personality prevents him from relying on a coach and has him trying to figure everything out on his own with occasional successes reinforcing his behavior, again part of an addictive personality. Sadly, with proper direction, he would have been one of the top athletes at any race.
