@heritagecreationscutflowers
@heritagecreationscutflowers Ай бұрын
I was up in the air about keeping feverfew for next year. We decided to pull it because this particular bed needs some work. We are removing the yarrow and separating it out to plant elsewhere.Adding compost to the bed to mound the bed a lot more to improve drainage. So we sacrificed the feverfew. I have started more feverfew to overwinter. I think with the amount of bed space I have I may need to just treat feverfew as an annual. Tarnish bugs .... well that's NO GOOD! I hate that for you! It is always something to fight in the garden! It seems when we figure out one thing - bam another insect or disease comes along. Good luck fighting those tarnish bugs!

I went to one in my small town in Florida zone 8b, last spring. I paid $65.00 for the class. Paid for the class ahead of time to hold my spot. The class was at a "high end" store. I say high end because that is how they advertise. When I got there I found out I had to purchase a vase from the store, I did not know this ahead of time. The size of vase had to be big for the arrangement we were going to make. It cost me another $45.00 plus tax for the vase. I was fun but honestly I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know, except the "florist" does not grow her own flowers. There was no color choice either. And my vase broke a week later. I am a new flower farmer and next year I plan to open to the public with a few bouquet bars, a few classes and a gladiolus You-Pick. The bouquet bar each bucket will have a price. They will be able to bring a vase in or just pick what they want. So, they can spend little and make a bud vase or make a $30.00 bouquet. This will be held under a tent at the front of the property. First come first served.
@heritagecreationscutflowers
@heritagecreationscutflowers Ай бұрын
@zaneymay thank you for your response! Interesting that you did actually attend one in your small town & now you are a grower. I think your idea sounds good. They will have options to spend what they want. The tent at the farm will be great because that will be a fun experience for them! Will you have a drop in during a certain time or be there at say 5pm & run it like a class?
@zaneymay
@zaneymay Ай бұрын
@@heritagecreationscutflowers the bars will open at a certain time and close when flowers are gone. First come first serve kind of thing. I will probably do mornings and evenings. Hi. As far as GeoSeeds goes, you don’t have to order 1000s. If you look at the catalog page (available online) the very first square in the spreadsheet reading to the right, after the plant description is a little block that says trade pkt. or something like that. Look up in the legend at the top. It varies but I think I got 100 snap seeds for $3.99 or close to that. They have a HUGE selection of cultivars also. It can be a little slow ordering on the telephone but those ladies are just sweet as pie so I can’t get annoyed at all.

interesting! I have always used netting with my snaps and never had an issue with the netting. I did have bent, curvy and split snap stems this year. I'm not exactly sure what happened. My guess... too much rain, lots of cold/warm temperature changes throughout the winter causing inconsistent growth habit where the plant needed more nutrients than the cool soil could provide.

@heritagecreationscutflowers
@heritagecreationscutflowers 4 ай бұрын
Apples of Peru is a great crop! It is a warm season crop. Harvest once seed pods (seed pods look like lanterns) have formed because it is the seed pods that you really want. I remove all the large leaves so the seed pods are more visible to give the foliage more interest. I have found it lasts a long time 7+ days in the vase. It can wilt once cut but give it several hours to hydrate and it recovers beautifully. I have gotten a ton of filler foliage off of these plants. The other benefit is it is a trap crop. The leaf footed bugs, beetles, etc love it. I have killed so many bad bugs on this plant but also found lady bugs on it as well. Since I take most of the leaves off, it doesn't matter!! 😂 I didn't think anyone would be interested but I can do a video on freshly milled flour! It is so good for you and I am pretty passionate about it!

Actually, you’re my hero of the day. You made this video, which is more than I can manage to do. Truthfully, I’m going out tomorrow to harvest all of the flowers for my FIRST EVER bouquet stand. I didn’t sleep last night and I’ve puked twice today. Oddly enough, I’m trying to retire from 33 years as a paramedic/nurse/firefighter. An incredibly dangerous, stressful, overwhelming career that I’ve had more than enough of. A few years ago I played around with a hobby flower farm and have increased more production and knowledge each year. THIS was supposed to be the year for me. Not only was I determined to have a beautiful and profitable flower farm, but I was going to start a KZbin channel and film it all. Yep. After 3 failed attempts at a KZbin video (because I just freeze and go completely blank🙄) Oh, and a bunch of snapdragons and sunflowers that are not cooperating, I’ve all but given up on this weeks bouquets. I won’t quit. I can’t quit. But I really want to right now. All of a sudden, chaos, bloody bodies and dying people just really doesn’t sound so stressful….Anyway, I’m not sure why I felt the need to share all that with you? I guess I just wanted you to know that you rock! You just did something I’m obviously not cut out for. Im incredibly impressed and I will def be following you! Much success to you!!! 💚

@rebeccathomas9804 so basically what I am saying os just give yourself grace! & don't try to do everything at once... Especially if you have not been a gardener for a long time. I have been a gardener for fifteen years, So I couldn't imagine people that are trying to start a farm and cut flower business and trying to learn how to grow things all at the same time! I would probably try To give myself a couple years just to try to learn how to grow things. Some flowers Like more sun than others , some flowers need more fertilizer than others, Some get attacked by pests more than others, etc. That is a lot of stuff to learn about, In addition to you , trying to learn how to run a business, marketing, etc.?!?! *I should listen to this advice I'm giving you about giving myself grace 😂

@ElderandOakFarm you do need to listen to your own advice 😊 Give yourself grace! We all need to talk to ourselves the way we would talk to others! We are so hard on ourselves! This flower farming thing is hard!! Crops can fail! Pests take over! It rains too much or too little … etc! Then we have to sell enough to make a profit! It can really burn you out … especially if you are working another full time job! I’m glad that you’re back in the garden but taking it a bit easier. Go slower and definitely give yourself grace! It’s hard! Take the small wins where you can & focus on those! Try to take some time to enjoy your garden again and let it bring you some joy again. If you have time, sit quietly in the garden for a little while and relax. I am trying to do this now because I am getting stressed out too. There are times when I know I need to slow it down and just enjoy the flowers - even for a few minutes. I also have another full time job and it can just get overwhelming. When I have fallen behind in planting or starting seeds … now instead of beating myself up I am TRYING to give myself grace and tell myself it will get done. It just may be delayed but it will be fine! You got this! We got this!

Thank you for your kind compliments! I try to be efficient in making bouquets but I also want them to look good. I know I spend a little more time on them then I am "supposed" to (from a profitability standpoint. The more I do it the quicker I get. My skills have improved with time so I think the time spent is worthwhile 😊

Cool flower stand! Is it out on a road? It looks like it's in your driveway.

The flower stand is in our front yard. it is right in front of one of our flower fields. It is set up as a drive through type stand.
