That shape of ginunting is not for chopping wood, you know what i mean

I do know what you mean. Thing Is I’ve tried straight, thick, thin, curved and full tang and they have all failed in the same ways. They have bent or they have broken at the tang. I make blades. I know exactly what I’m talking about when I say all the issues I’ve experienced have been because of two reasons. First, the woods I cut are very hard and dense and twisted. I test the blades hard on these woods and am not surprised when they fail sometimes. Second the heat treatment on everything I’ve tried has had some issues. The one I’ll eventually build will hopefully rectify those issues. I’m not saying it will for sure. I’m testing to see if I can. If the one I build passes. It will confirm my theories. If mine breaks it’ll simply confirm that the blade type cannot do what I’m asking it to.

I wanted a Kukri, and the cost difference between a good one of modern make, and an original wasn't really big, so I went for the real deal first. I have one of the Longleaf Kukri from Atlanta Cutlery, and used it to down a couple of small walnut trees in the yard by the property line. My neighbor saw me and was blown away how quick I delimbed and took them down with "just a knife". Then I told him how old it was. These things can put in some serious work. The devanagari on mine dated the blade 1901-1929, so the dates IMA and ACC are giving out aren't strictly accurate for the arsenal, but it was neat seeing which battalion it was made for.

I think anyone who thinks they want a Khukuri should at least try an original to baseline what they have in mind when they look for a modern one. The originals are amazing. There are still some Bishwokorma that can make them like that. But they are hard to find.

I’ve always said, any great cook can work with any knife. I personally use an ESEE Junglas for most of my food prep, both at home or in the bush. I’m getting a Kukri some time within this week or so, and to learn its nuances, I will use it in the kitchen first. It’s a great baseline for knowing your knife’s limitations. Great video!

The Modern Bowie is a great knife! Unfortunately though I’m one of those who are not a fan of the handle shape. I’ve used it a lot and bear a nasty scar from it (my fault, not the knifes) 😂 Ultimately it was traded though on though to someone who really needed the stainless qualities

The Garab you got is a rendition by the good guys from Mindoro province. Maybe that's why you got a double bevel. Visayan blades are usually chisel grind.
@sundogforgebydml1050
@sundogforgebydml1050 Жыл бұрын
That makes a lot of sense. It was to my benefit as I’m left handed so it would have been difficult to swing with a chisel grind intended for a right handed person.

Tell me where does the sundog originate from?
@sundogforgebydml1050
@sundogforgebydml1050 Жыл бұрын
SunDog in this context has multiple meanings. In the scientific sense it’s part of the natural phenomenon called a Parhelion. But it can also invoke the mental image of an exhausted dog that’s been too long out in the sun. That’s a very Australian image. I plan on a sunburnt dog holding a knife and drinking a beer with my emblems being printed on merchandise at some stage. As for the symbology and mythology behind the Parhelion? That would take forever to write here because the primary visual representation of a Parhelion looks a lot like the old Celtic cross which is one of the oldest symbols in the world. I hope that helps at least a little. Happy to chat more about it if you’d like to PM me through Messenger.

Amazingly well. It actually looks way better now. The one I’ve got touring has been beat to shit and is loving life. The one with me has been beat up even more and hasn’t missed a beat. True apocalypse knives so long as you can control the rust but in my environment I’ve done nothing to protect mine besides a natural patina and it’s been totally fine. No rust at all.

Mate you under estimating the capability of that type of blade it's not even an abuse to use a ginunting on that size of a wood, it would be an abuse if you used it on a log but at that point we usually use a heavy machete(I weighted mine and it's a kilo) if we don't have an axe but I guess that's less durable considering the short tang and what you got is not really for heavy work but more for martial arts or light work, I'd say great review and can't wait to see your version of it
@sundogforgebydml1050
@sundogforgebydml1050 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback. I’m still learning about Ginunting. There are many different types so I believe there must be one similar to what I’m germs made that would suit my purposes. Since this video I’ve actually used this Ginunting a lot and although I’ve bent it a few times I’ve managed to straighten it easily. The handle has held together perfectly fine and the edge is fine. The geometry of the edge and the heat treatment being the only problems to truly improve and that’s only based on one example. I’ve friends that think I may have gotten one that may have been tempered different to usual.
@idccharls6003
@idccharls6003 Жыл бұрын
If you want an all rounder sword/tool you could base it on a top Prado ginunting with the long hand guard and if you want a durable heavy duty the tfw ginunting that skallagrim reviewed would be a good basis
@sundogforgebydml1050
@sundogforgebydml1050 Жыл бұрын
@@idccharls6003 I’ve got something similar coming. It’ll be similar to what I’ve got but in 80crv2 steel and tapering tang that goes all the way through the handle. Handle will be stacked leather with brass guard and butt cap. Either peened together or with a threaded nut so that I can replace the handle later on. More of a spring temper to allow flex and return rather then it bending. Traditional locking scabbard. I love the scabbard exactly the way it is.

This was purchased through Kailash Blades and I supplied the steel to Andrew myself because he was going to Nepal at the time. As such, it’s currently one of a kind. They don’t have access to 80crv2 normally. I think one in 5160 would cost around 350usd but you would need to discuss it with Kailash Blades. I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more use but if you’d like the specifications and design for a reproduction through another smith or company, I’d be happy to discuss it further 😊
