I wonder if the reason some people think they can live the Christian life apart from the church is because the churches they have been a part of have not been very helpful to them. In which case, who can blame them? The blame is on those church leaders who don’t understand the point of it all. Hurts my heart, I wish everyone could know that there are healthy churches out there in which they can thrive and help others thrive too.

Hey Luke - I think some of it is just that. Especially in the last 10 years or so. But I think a larger part of it is the culture of individualism we have pretty much always had in the USA. Alexis de Tocqueville, a frenchman touring the young United States in 1831, identified the spirit of individualism as both the best and worst thing about America. Plenty of other sociologists have always gone back to his theories of "American Thesis" regarding the role and spirit of liberty. Tocqueville even warned if this spirit of independence and individualism was to remain unchecked, it would slowly start to erode society. If one looks at the development of religion in American, a unique strain of Protestantism developed with many of these ideals at it's core. It shows in our commitment to Revivalism, the developments of pre-millenial dispensationalism in the late 19th century, and 20th century congregationalism. Move this forward a couple hundred years, we get this idea informing the idea of a "churchless Christianity". I don't want to do a super deep dive into this in a KZbin comment, but I feel this is a a pretty strong reason for the behavior. I'm glad you've had a great experience with churches, I've pretty much been in the same place. Healthy churches are always a great thing for everyone.

Interesting comment of live streaming. I find that live streaming is almost a 'free' add on. If we still want to record video of the sermon to edit and then post, just streaming the live streaming is really no extra 'cost' in time. Now - we don't have a heavy production approach to our services. No special graphics, no camera people running around, etc. We're a church of about ~100 on a Sunday. We don't do shorts, reels, etc. We are thinking the opposite - just live stream, time mark the stream after its done and be done! The post editing of the service recording for a podcast and a sermon video to post on KZbin, etc is where additional time is needed!

As someone who is crazy about pens for my Bibles. I have so many pens, my wife just shakes her head. But typically I use the Pigma Micron .01 for underlining Scripture and circling words. I use the Pigma Micron .005 for writing in the margins. I use the Mr. Pen Sleek yellow highlighter for highlighting. And I flip back and forth between the Pilot G-Tec-C4 and the Pilot G-2 07 for writing in my Molesikine Journals. Now, thanks to you, I have a new set of pens to order and try fpr writing, Chinco 12 Pieces 0.35 mm Black Gel Ink Pen Extra Fine Ballpoint Pen. 😊 Thank you brother and have a blessed week.

My fav pen is a Zebra F-701, but then mine's special. I hack it and put in a fischer space pen refill. I love the gnurling, gives a great firm grip. The fischer refills last a long time. It's my daily driver, and I use it im my bible too. WHen I'm carrying my small bible in my backpack (cause a turkey buzzard is too heavy) I use a micron for marking up. 100% zebra highliners! I don't use note cards, but always have a notebook of some sort, typically field notes. For the same purpose. You never know when inspiration hits and its important to write those thoughts down so they are retained. For me too it can be quotes from books I'm currently reading, something in devotion God says to me, or just a random project idea. Note taking is very very very important.

Most the ones in stock are w apocrypha and us protestanrs cant use that. It sucks the NIV kinda overwhelmingly took over and was more favored over nrsv. I wish nrsv was still used more often and produced

As someone who has a lot of stuff going on (9 to 5 day job, in seminary working towards an MDiv, husband, father, youth group leader, etc), I do try and spend 45-60 minutes a day reading "for fun" (i.e. not school reading) a day. It is usually in the morning or on my lunch break during the week. This allows me to read 50+ books a year.

Wow! I know I'm late to the party, but I'm fascinated by your motivation here. First, I think you're confusing differing roles for men and women within the church for differing value or importance in ministry. While Jesus clearly broke the norms of his day by including women in worship and in service he also never appointed a woman to a role of authority or leadership within his congregation. But I'm more interested to know what translation DOESN'T clearly draw a distinction between the roles of men and women in ministry?
