Much improved since this film was produced. Greater variety of employment opportunities, better leisure facilities, better schools, dockside being developed, new General Hospital, shipyard thriving with order book full for years ahead, Dock Museum, The Forum, modern police station, improved transport links to the M6, ……….

There was a guy lived in North Scale village by the name of Ambrose Turner.. What he couldn't tell you about the area wasn't worth knowing. I met him a couple of times. Such a pity all his knowledge is lost.

It was once a great town. Even I, living in distant New Zealand, have heard of this shipbuilding mecca. I am sorry it is now in decay.

I left Barrow shortly after this date. Happy memories, but now there is virtually nothing left of the place I called home. Of the four schools I went to until I was 16, only one remains, South Newbarns Junior. In the dream of "progress", the town was killed.

@b.nichols3255 Same here. Abbotsmead Infants, the Grammar Schools and College of Further Education all seem to have gone. I am surprised the awful old Roose Junior building is still standing but like you I moved to South Newbarns.

I was 12 years old and living on Walney in 1980. Great video. Less traffic on the roads then nowadays and less litter. Tidy streets. Nicer then today. Great childhood memories of living in Barrow.

Amazing footage. I was born that year so it's really interesting to see. Just to the left of the cooling tower was the school I first went to in 1973... namely Thwaite Street school (which is now replaced with Ramsden Infants which I also went to briefly in 1975) which was a classic Victorian type school... I've never really seen any decent photos of it inside sadly... I put a lot of them on the Barrow in old photos facebook.

The title picture is synonymous of what is wrong with Barrow's inner town area. All the high street is dead, and all thanks to this kind of shopping estate. Barrow is a hollow husk of what it used to be.

I remember barrow being this way.teachers told everyone back in ‘88 that moving away was the best thing we could do because there was no future in barrow for us. After seeing some of the videos on KZbin recently, they obviously knew something well in advance.

I would be very interested to know what that tower like structure is located behind the left side of the viaduct, it is visable approx at 1.46 minute into the video and also at the 5.03 mark. You could always see it on the " End of Part One Title" during the mid to late 80s

I remember ringing home from the phonebox & told my mum that''s where I was calling her from 😂😂, I went on the granada studios tour twice as a kid, was a good day out from what I can remember.

The liveliness of the town in this film is something I wish would return to Barrow. The market hall is half-empty with nearly no outdoor stalls, & most of the units on the high street look half-derelict. Someday, maybe, the town will regain some of that life.

I can't say I disagree! KZbin doesn't have much selection of copyright free music and this was uploaded before I started using an expensive music provider. Unfortunately I can't update or change anything on an existing video without removing it and starting again.

Marvellous! A wonderful record. The organ sounds well and Mr Whitten's playing is pretty near impeccable. As for Mr Noble, it's great to hear a local accent (I'm from Penrith) and if nobody told him otherwise, how was he to know how to pronounce Karg-Elert? Thank you very much for this.
