It's so easy to miss the fact that the chattel slavery centuries were like an alternate universe. It makes me think of the Janelle Monáe movie. A horror alternate reality. There was a very interesting story in Vanity Fair (in the 90s maybe?) about Charles James. It detailed, as was mentioned here, how it would take him a year to deliver a dress and sometimes he would sell it to another person. It also mentioned how he would redo a sleeve over and over - 100 times say. Or how he would deliver a dress and then go to the customer's home a month later and repossess it to redo the bust line. In my opinion, he suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder along with a bit of Narcissism. Not a beneficial combination. I truly believe he was not mentally well - which explains why he could never get along with anyone.

It was a delight to see her retrospective at the MAD museum in NYC a few years back. Such a diverse approach to designing garments and interiors ( retail) yet tied back simply to her iconic lynch pins. (black lacquer, carved roses, butterflies, purple)
