It is a beautiful thing when you see a garment that is well loved and gets new eras of its life. When someone inherits a beautiful bespoke tweed 1970s suit I bought at a garage sale, they will see that I unstitched the lining from the cuffs and carefully added by hand rings of wool from some old trousers. This is because the sleeves are very narrow, and were never intended to be worn with cufflinks, which I always wear. I wanted the lining to be more protected from the links. The tweed is black and white herringbone, the wool is light gray. They will also see that my corduroy waistcoat was well loved, and has handsewn patches on the armholes where the lining wore out. These days, it is only worn for going out shooting in the country with a rough shirt and brown denim. I love that I was able to give the waistcoat a new life in retirement. Sometimes I find totally unworn antique and vintage clothing, and it gets its first life with me, where it will be loved just as if it were that time when it was made.

Thanks for posting this enlightening discussion. I am just about through “Fashion is Spinach” and Hawes has such a vibrant, iconoclastic voice. Enjoyed learning more about her life and work from these panelists.

Good that people are pointing out some inaccuracies and I think Japan should have been in there the different music and fashion of their first two albums.

Stan is a uniform genius! I don't believe he designed my Burger King uniform from back in the day, but I can tell you that nowadays, McDonald's, for example, has no real corporate uniform, and I think that's a shame and a mistake.

8:00 Oop. Drag queen history. Mary Jones. Sex-worker and Pick-pocket. Arrested in 1836. 🤔 How did they fall into sex-work and stealing in 1836? Is it a dna gene? Or perhaps...the way that society is structured...🤔 Mary Jones was shoved into that lane. Like a bowling ball when the gutter guards are installed. A rather regal portrait though. Oop. A little antiblack as well as antigay, in the same vid 😀 *'The Man-M_nster'* 🚶🏿

It's so easy to miss the fact that the chattel slavery centuries were like an alternate universe. It makes me think of the Janelle Monáe movie. A horror alternate reality. The enslaved Africans couldn't wear pockets in their pants. The enslaved African women had to wear loose dresses. All so that they wouldn't 'steal' The compensation for the labor, of their *entire lives* was stolen. And they couldn't wear pockets, *'Because they steal'* 🚶🏿

What an incredible storyteller and authority on fashion trends. 👏 the late Andre Leon Tally - what an amazing episode. I had the privilege of working for Dior Couture for AUS/NZ market during John Galliano's Tenure. And can confirm the pieces and collections are as exquisite and mind blowing as described. My all time favourite is the 60ANS PE haute Couture collection inspired by Madame Butterfly 🦋 ✨️
