I am unable to remove my grinder bit…have you any magical techniques to remove my bit?
@SCOARTGLASS19 күн бұрын
Try a little spray of WD-40 down the top of shaft if it is the type that is open in the center of the bit and let it sit. Take a pair of channel locks or regular pliers that are wide enough to fit around the bit. Loosen set screw and try to wiggle back and forth and pull up at the same time. This has worked for me when my bit seized up on the shaft. Before putting it back on ensure to put some grease on the shaft to keep it from seizing up and take it off or move it up and down every so often helps.

So if you wax the piece, you don’t have to use a patina?
@SCOARTGLASS22 күн бұрын
Patina is optional. It depends on the look you want. This one I chose to keep it silver so wax is all I needed.

Well shoot I was hoping to get some help but just like your hanging piece my hanging stained glass piece does not lay flat when it hangs from a chain, it twists to one side or the other it's very annoying it doesn't look good and then when I open and close my curtains it sometimes catches on them because it's not laying flat and I was hoping you would show what type of hook or chain to use so that it faces forward and not to one side or the other. I'm beginning to think my problem might require rocket science. Nobody seems to have an answer.
@SCOARTGLASSАй бұрын
Are you using “jack chain” ⛓️💥on a single o-ring? It will sometimes cause the slight twist. If you can add another o-ring and hang like a picture it most likely will take the twist out.

This didn’t help me…I have a very large framed stained glass, hanging something small is easy…but I don’t know how to secure a huge one…
@SCOARTGLASS2 ай бұрын
What’s the size of the framed glass? Are you putting it inside the frame of an existing window? Provide a little more details and see if I can give you some tips? I have secured a few larger pieces inside a window frame and on a wall.

What brand of bits do you recommend? Also which size do you recommend 1” or 3/4”?
@SCOARTGLASS3 ай бұрын
If you don’t have a specific branded grinder that only takes that brand bits then I recommend the Aanraku Glass Grinder Bits - 3/4 inch “Twofers” : scoartglass.com/product/aanraku-glass-grinding-bit-3-4-inch-twofers-stained-glass-mosaic-supplies/. No need to foil where the hobby came will be. Also, if you have a Vice, use it to stretch your hobby came. In addition, they make a “stretcher” for around $15. Screw it to your workbench. It is the easiest thing to use and you come away with perfectly stretched came every time. Happy lobbying!

I purchased 5/64 Hobby Came its considerably wider than the glass. How do you use it? What size did you use in this instruction video.
@SCOARTGLASS6 ай бұрын
I center the glass in the channel and solder at where the solder lines from the project meet the hobby came. This holds the hobby came in place. I also like to add a quick solder line along the front and back edge of the hobby came to fill in the tiny gaps that may form depending how well you form the hobby came to the projects edge. It adds strength in my opinion but is not required to do this. Some people super glue the hobby came on by running super glue along the glass project edge and then stick the hobby came on. Hope this helps and happy glassing.

I know you may not see this, but where can I get that glass hold tool? That's a great idea for the small pieces! And do you have a pump on the grinder? I don't have that but the water tank under the top of the grinder...? Thank you! nice informative video!
@SCOARTGLASS8 ай бұрын
I usually carry them on my website, an affiliate of amazon, but here is the link on amazon for the "Grinder Cookie". It saves your thumbs from little glass scratches! amzn.to/3OP4w3D. I had a pump in the bucket that pumps the water up to the grinder (amzn.to/3UIuF7U). I will be making a new video on a new pump system for the grinder later this spring. Setting up new studio now.

Newbie question here. If I have a cutter’s mate cutting system could I just put the pattern under the glass and cut the glass without having to outline the pattern with the sharpie?
@SCOARTGLASS9 ай бұрын
If you are comfortable with your cutting ability and can see the pattern lines clearly enough through the glass then try it out! It will save you some time. You will see a lot of experienced artists do this. I do it on simple patterns. But, remember to cut on the inside of the pattern line. Good luck and happy glassing!

I have 'inherited' one of your grinders - Is your Kirstall 1 suitable for grinding broken pieces of chinaware? Is there an instruction sheet? I am not sure how much this machine has been used for glass grinding, but when will I know it is time to replace the existing one? Thanks in advance.
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the question. I am not to familiar with Kristall grinders. I believe these are more available in Europe. Mine is a Diamond Tech Max 2 grinder and it has been a champ based on all the grinding I have done. It should be suitable for chinaware but I would use a a fine grit bit so not to cause too much dust and to test since chinaware (porcelain) is more dense than glass and then go from there. As far as when to replace, stops working or the motor seems to drag or has slowed down after you turn it on. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your help! When displaying this on a window indoors, should the textured or smooth side be facing outward to the sun? x
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
It depends how you want to view it. Most textured glass is used on the "finished" side that most people view. If you want people outside to see it, then textured side out. If the piece is mainly for your enjoyment then textured side facing inside. Really the choice is up to you.
@glasslight7960 Жыл бұрын
What grit do you generaly use? I've been purchasing the 100 standard, but wondering when the coarse or fine would be beneficial.
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
I mainly use the standard/regular grit (100 - 120). I find the course bit useful if you are working with heavily textured glass. Scores aren’t always consistent and glass sometimes has a mind of its own and doesn’t break where you want. This bit lets you quickly grind the excess off and doesn’t ruin you regular bit. Fine I don’t use but recon it might be good for glass beads or mosaic work? Thanks for the question and watching.
@rick419 Жыл бұрын
When you glued pieces onto the glass you left a gap between. Will you need to cut or grind this off?
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
I score right next to the paper with my cutter. Normally I don’t have to do too much grinding. They are small pieces I break off with my grozing pliers. I leave enough space to get my cutter through and grab the glass with grozing pliers if I am not using my running pliers. Hope this helps and thanks for watching and the question.

How do you suggest hanging with roll up blinds? From the ceiling in front of blinds? Windows are vinyl so don’t want to drill into the underside of frame.
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
If you have a small gap and want to hang the piece between the window and the rollup blind than you can run clear fishing line-amzn.to/3YPdiT3 down from the ceiling above the window. If not, the other option is using either adhesive hooks-amzn.to/3KZ1mZn directly to the window or suction cups hooks-amzn.to/3sza61G but with clear tape over it for reinforcement or add the adhesive discs-amzn.to/47Mb4bd to your suction cup hooks. Depending on temperature & humidity, suction cups alone will eventually give way causing potential damage to your piece. Always reinforce the suction cups. Hope this helps.
@jonnyquest29 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Fishing line is probably the best option.

Should you hand it on a window you don't open and us it important to hang it on a window that gets sun!

I would use a window that is sunny and won’t be opened or closed that much. In the video it was a side of a double door that I rarely used and gets a lot of sun during the winter. Thanks for watching and the comment.

Given the same coarseness, does a 1" and a 3/4" bit have different qualities? When would you use one over the other?
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
If your not changing coarse grit, in my opinion, no difference. I primarily keep the 3/4” on my grinder all the time as it is more versatile for smaller inner curves and shaping. To me, the only advantage for the 1” would be larger pieces of glass with minimal curves to get around the glass a little quicker or using it as a base to stack bits to reduce change outs. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

Thank you, Do you have to clean your Hobby came differently prior to putting patina, will it become black as well as the soldering does?
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
I would clean it well and run a copper scrub sponge you find in your kitchen sponge aisle over it and clean again. That will help in getting it black.
@dragonfly3341 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your instruction video very informative, I have a question, Can I use hobby came on an oval panel approximately 14"x 8"?
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
Yes you can. I have used it on a 12” round. I would ensure not to have too long of runs without an attachment point between the hobby came and a solder line.
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
May also think about a zinc edge for more rigidity. It will hold up better. Hobby came is softer.

I recently purchased a ripple bit as I understood it would facilitate applying the copper foil on thick/extremely textured glass. However I am baffled as to how to set up the ripple bit on my grinder (it doesn’t sink into the hole surrounding the grinder motor shaft) and I am not sure how to use the bit correctly. Wondering if you have any videos with demonstrations.
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
Charmaine thanks for your comment. I struggled at first too. Check to make sure the ripple bit you have matches the contour of the shaft. Theses bits do come in handy with thick textured glass. I will see if I can get a video posted here soon on this topic per your request.

So your flower was tinned all around before you added the hobbycam?
@SCOARTGLASS Жыл бұрын
Yes it was. You don't have to do this, most just add the hobby came directly on not to waste solder. It is your preference. I like it to hold better and not pull away. Thanks for the question and watching the video.
