Not bobbin chicken! Yes I have at least 100 spare bobbins in cases ready to roll. Top tip, I add cut plastic tubing, normally used in fish tanks, on bobbins to prevent them unwinding.

I’ve been quilting for over 50 years and it is such a pleasure to see someone who is trying to instruct possible new quilters the correct way to square up and bind a quilt. So many quilters just cut the excess batting and backing off to be the same size as their quilt rather than squaring up a quilt properly like you did. Excellent job of teaching a good way to bind your quilt as well. I do hand stitch my binding on just because I enjoy it. Thank you for your excellent instructions to new quilters.

Never have I had someone complain about a machine sewn binding. And a bonus about it is that it is much stronger than hand sewn.

I machine bind as well; it is stronger that hand stitching. I make quilts for people to use and pass down to future generations.

This video is to demonstrate the final joining of binding that has been joined with diagonal seams. This style once folded and sewn to the edge of your quilt spreads your seams apart along the quilt edge. This avoids a hard lump in your binding because your seam allowances don't stack up. The final joining of the two ends of the binding can be tricky. The tutorial shows you that to make a diagonal join for binding you need to add a piece of fabric the shape of a square that is the dimension of the width of your unfolded binding. The hack .... find where the two ends meet and cut one strip longer by the width of your opened binding. Instead of measuring the binding strip width and then adding this length to your binding strip before you cut it, you can use the width of the loose end of the binding directly to measure the extra length you need. An extra perfect square of fabric is exactly what you need to make the diagonal seam, just like making one half square triangle by sewing two squares together on the diagonal point to point. To help you get your head around this, try it then finger press the seam open and the flaps will make a perfect square the exact same size as the extra length you added. And just like for a half square triangle you will now remove the extra fabric triangles leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
