Great choices here; the Source Audio Zio is definitely underated, either to add gain or add volume to main drives & fuzzes pre or post. Surfy is a newer discovery, and I've used their Spring for a while now.Before that, I used the SA True Spring, which is the only digital emulation I've really liked; I'd still use it anyday, especially live, where it's hard to tell from the real thing. The Stereomaker will soon replace my Orange Detonator, which is great, but doesn't emulate stereo.I was curious about the Brownfacer/Blossom Point, for the presence control and possibly to set the overall level going to the amp at the end of the chain(?).It does have separate input & output levels, which is a surprisingly difficult feature to find.With such effects, you always want to keep noise floor, headroom, and the amount of potential power consumption related in mind.Otherwise, it's easy to end up with this squashed, indistinguishable mess, - in stereo. Another discovery lately has been Thorpy, out of England; if you can't find whatever effect that does it for you, Thorpy probably make it.

Hello Mark, thank you for chiming in with your comments. I'm glad that you found the video interesting and that you like the choices for the pedalboard. Surfy Industries make some terrific pedals. The Blossom Point is not always easy to integrate in a pedal chain. It is best suited as a stand alone pedal to emulate the typical saturation of a Brown or Tweed Fender amp, it's really good at adding that kind of "colour" to any amp. More in general, the Blossom Point adds some dirt and personality to a clean tone. You may be interested in the following episode, where I deal more in depth with the Blossom Point: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5SxeIt8f7eCa9k I agree, Thorpy pedals look really original and well built.

Good question Jason, it's hard to say since a side by side comparison with same settings and same environment it's impossible. For sure, the amplifier sounds great now, probably "better" than it used to. Relying on theory it should sound a bit creamier, more aggressive and less "polished".

Ted must have disclosed the constructional concept of Les Paul's The Log to Ray, as this is the closest thing to (Polfus') original idea. By a fortunate mistake, I obtained an ebony Historic (reverse) Firebird V in Oct 2006 for $1270 (hardcase included) as the salesman mislabeled the tag as a Studio model. I have had several people mention that it has that authentic sound like the older ones, even though the pickups test out much at higher readings.

Hello Douglas, looks like you bought a great guitar at bargain price,congratulations! About the "Polfus' Log", in my opinion the ES-335, designed by Ted himself in 1958, is actually a lot closer to that concept even though McCarty never admitted that the Log was his source of inspiration. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4mZq4uXr7aqkNU

@@BobsToneReview Reference correct. The wings of The Log were hollow, as was the 335, the block installed to minimize feedback...the Les Paul was solid as was the Firebird, to maximize sustain along with neck pitch and string pull/ tension.

GREAT video of my all time favorite guitar, the Gibson Firebird. I longed for a Firebird ever since 1963, when I saw a whole flock of them in the shop window of the local music store, suspended in mid air like a fleet of custom-colored spaceships. Ten years later, I lucked onto an original ‘64 Firebird III (or ‘third’ as Bob calls it 😂) and now play a ‘72 Firebird V Medallion. Produced by Gibson in commemoration of the ‘72 Olympics in a limited numbered run of 366 (1972 was a leap year), the Medallion was the very first reissue of the original ‘63 Firebird V and shares its two-piece center block (nine-ply center blocks came later) and logo-less pickguard. It sounds every bit as good as the original thanks to the left-over 60’s alnico pickups Gibson still had lying on the shelf. Subsequent reissues employed newer ceramic pickups and lacked the magic of the originals. Believe me, absolutely NOTHING sounds like the neck pickup of an original Firebird. The Firebird’s bridge pickup is often criticized as sounding too shrill, but easing up on its tone control actually dials in mids and takes you from Tele to Les Paul territory with the flick of the wrist, making the Firebird the perfect studio guitar. I’ve done countless sessions in my time and the first thing producers would tell me was “bring your Firebird!” as it covers all grounds and is a time saver. On top of its sonic magic, the Firebird, to me, represents the epitome in design, together with the Studebaker Avanti, another goodie from 1963.

Hello ArkyMalarkey, thank you for chiming in with such interesting anecdotes and considerations! I'm happy that you enjoyed the video! And yes... actually Roman numerals are generally used as ordinal numbers. 😉😃I would be curious to know which town the "spaceships shop window" was, I'm sure it was amazing. You are right, now I regret I didn't mention that the early models from 1963 had simpler 3-piece center blocks and no logo on the pickguard; I was afraid it would have been too lengthy to point it out. Also I fully agree with your considerations, both tone-wise and concerning the look and design. Please feel free to browse through the other content of the channel if you have time.

@@BobsToneReview: Thnx for your reply. In answer to your question: The shop with the ‘spaceships window’ was Whitwood Music in Whittier, a small town in California where I lived in the early sixties. That store is long gone now, but I’ll never forget the sight of those red, white, green and blue Firebirds in flight. In that same store, they were selling brand new Bursts for 150 bucks a piece, but nobody wanted them, including me. If I’d only known… As for the center blocks on early ‘63 Birds: forgive me for correcting you, but they really were two-piece (not three) with a center seam. And I have watched and enjoyed your videos, especially the one about the brownface Fender Tremolux, one of my favorite amps and a perfect match for the Firebird.

Years ago I saw Johnny Winter play both a regular Firebird and a reverse Firebird, and Sonny Landreth played one on the original "Slow Turning" tour with John Hiatt (it was the reverse model if I remember correctly). Sonny frequently plays his instrumental tribute to Johnny Winter, "Firebird Blues", in concert nowadays, except he plays it on a Strat! In the mid 1980s, Johnny himself switched to a lightweight, headstock-less Dan Erlewine "Lazer" as his main guitar and only rarely played the Firebird, darn it..... I seem to remember seeing pictures of Billy Gibbons playing a Firebird with ZZ Top as well.

That's interesting Goodun! "Firebird Blues" played on a Strat, ih! ih! As for the testimonials I mentioned in fact that it's only a partial rundown. Yes, Billy Gibson has also used the Firebird occasionally. I've never seen Johnny Winter playing a non-reverse model, are you sure? On the other hand, even when Johnny switched to the Erlewine Lazer as his main guitar, he always used the Firebird during his concerts, at least for a couple of slide tracks. In fact the video-footage I used refers to his last years.
@goodun2974
@goodun2974 2 ай бұрын
@@BobsToneReview , I'm not positive if I ever saw him with a non- reverse Firebird because the last time I saw him play live was in the mid to late 1980s, and that time he only brought out the Firebird for a couple of songs, as you mentioned. I saw him several times before that, maybe 1980-81, and it was Firebirds only, two of them I think, but I don't recall either one being white. It was over 40 years ago, and we were all in heavy duty party mode back then, so the brain cells assigned to those particular memories have probably gone down the drain! PS, not sure but I think even Hendrix was photographed with a Firebird once, as well as a flying V for certain.

@@BobsToneReview , The first time I saw Johnny Winter play it was at a club called the Shaboo Inn ---- you can probably look up online even though it's long gone. It was a real pit, a dive bar with low ceilings and crisscrossing pipes that you could reach up and touch. When I saw Johnny there it was a hot August night and people's sweat was condensing on the pipes and dripping back down on us like rain. Johnny had to towel himself off in between songs because he was dripping with sweat. A lot of famous people played there in the few years it was open before it burned down. I saw Bonnie Raitt, Elvin Bishop, and Arlo Guthrie there; the Police played there on their first US tour to only a couple dozen people, but I wasn't there for that show unfortunately. Rumor has it that the place was torched for the insurance.

Hello@@HD-Daddy, sorry for the silly joke in my previous message. Actually I don't think the thickness of the nitro finish can determine different hues of the black light reflection. I would tend to think that your guitar has not all original finish, provided that it looks exactly like the refinished Les Paul Deluxe in the video.

@@BobsToneReview Thanks! Everything seemes to work with my Dynacord Echocord Super 62, it fires up, tape is moving, signal in the green eye, valves are good. But nothing from the guitar amp not even the dry signal. If it needs a recab the parts Will be 235 USD. Will take it to a technitian to see what’s wrong. On the good side: Found a similar tape echo a Dynacord Echocord Super 65 in a shop for just a little more. So will buy it. Can’t beat a valve driven delay. Avalanche run and Afterneath of EQD are brilliant pedals. I use them a lot. But they`re not the real deal.

@@fredrikmoback146, absolutely! Those pedals do their job very well but I agree that the real deal tube/tape units are a whole different matter. Good luck with the Dynacord Echoes!

Does the reverb suck any of the tone from the guitar? I have a 6g6b that needs some classic reverb but almost anytime I run my guitar through any other pedal, even with true bypass, it seems different than going direct.

Hello Rhythmicons, are you referring to the Surfy Industries Surfybear Classic? I've also used it in studio and I confirm that it's an effective modern rendition of the original Fender 6G15 unit; no quality loss, highly recommended! The "Metal" model is also great: thmn.to/thoprod/511408?offid=1&affid=2034

9:34 Interesting that the agreement was signed so early, prior to the appearance of the Rickenbacker 12 string. At this point only John played Rickenbacker routinely, Harrison's 420 being used only for a short period.

Good point Chris. In fact, as you can see at 10:39, the 12 string model was not even included in the first run of instruments shown in the Rose Morris catalog; also only a few batches of these guitars were ever produced.

@@BobsToneReview Another point is the effect of RM importing the Shaftesbury brand. Today Rickenbacker are renown for protecting their intellectual property and I've often thought that this has its roots in this period.

@@chrisst8922 Chris, that makes absolutely sense. in fact I think that presenting maliciously the Shaftsbury copies with the same model codes of the originals, was definitely a deal breaker.

@@BobsToneReview The Shaftesbury guitars were played by The Rolling Stones briefly. I live near London and have visited Denmark Street many times. Whilst other shops appear slightly down at heel and have come and gone, Rose Morris's shop appears to be the nicest shop on the street. On display are pianos, acoustic guitars and music books, unless you knew you'd never associate them with something as cool as The Beatles. Then last year they displayed a brand new 4005XC and there was a poster proclaiming something to the effect that Rickenbacker was back after half a century.

@@chrisst8922 I didn't know the Stones played Shaftsbury; that souns funny if you consider that they had an endorsement from Gibson during the McCarty era! 🙂 I've been several times in Denmark St. and the Rose Morris shop; that's quite an experience if you love guitars! I even bought an early reissue of Firebird back in the early 1990's, can't remember the name of the particular shop.

Good video, Bob! You covered this topic very well, I have a particular interest in these guitars as a collector of them (I also started a Facebook group dedicated to 1960s era Rose Morris Rickenbacker guitars). Just a few notes that hopefully add context (or corrections): It’s important to point out that the 325 had completely discontinued production after 1959 until the Rose Morris order was placed in Dec. 1963. While an F-shaped sound hole was standard on the 325 models (both in 1958-1959 and when reintroduced in 1964), the first two batches of Rose Morris 1996 models had a wider sound hole on a different position (called “two o’clock” position). This was changed by May 1964 to the more typical F-hole of the other hollow-body Rose Morris Rickenbacker models. 11:17 - the 1995 is not a version of any guitar that George Harrison played (he had a 425 with an added pickup, while the 1995 is identical to the 615 model). They are both through-neck cresting wave bodies, but the 615 has the pickups surface-mounted like hollow-body Rickenbackers, while the 425 is more budget oriented and recesses the pickups into the body. 12:55 - the “Made in USA” printed on the truss rod cover was primarily done to identify the country of origin for import reasons, not necessarily for the benefit of customers. 14:11 - I used to own this guitar (the ‘65 Rose Morris 1993 12-string), built in February 1965 and exported to Australia. I currently own another example from this same batch. Only 100 of these guitars were made, in four batches of 25 across a 10-month period. 23:30 - that particular guitar shown (1964 Rose Morris 1993) is refinished. The color is, and always was, Fireglo. No Rose Morris models were ever officially “Autumnglo” but there was a shipment of “red burst” 1997 and 1998 models made in early 1966 after Rose Morris requested a red model, but they were not popular. 25:50 - it wasn’t that Rickenbacker was unable to fulfill Rose Morris orders quickly enough….they were unwilling to do so. This is obvious when looking at the overall production records from Electro String (which produced all Rickenbacker guitars). 1966 and 1967 were the factory’s biggest production years in that decade. They were simply prioritizing U.S. domestic production after previously prioritizing export shipments in 1964-1965.

Hello CollinWhitley, first of all thank you for chiming in! I'm really happy that you liked the video. Thank you so much for sharing your observations: they are a great basis for constructive and interesting confrontation. No doubt you are a great expert on this subject. Even so I can't agree with everything you say. 1 - I know about the "2 o'clock Position F-Hole" on the early batches of the 1996 Model. A KZbin video, is not inherently the best medium or instrument to convey such level of detail. Although my channel is committed to this kind of information, exceeding with too many technical details can make the video dull, long and tedious, especially for less involved audience. That's exactly the reason why at the end of the video, I invite the viewers to deepen the topic from other sources, for more comprehensive information. 2 - Thank you, I meant that the 1995 is reminiscent of George Harrison's 425, I should have made it more clear. 4 - Thank you, great information, congratulations on your amazing collection! 5 - I think that " officially" is the point of what you say; I'm sure that both of us have seen plenty of vintage rarities that do not exist in official literature. It is worth noting that Martin Kelly's book reports that a number of "Autumnglo" guitars were actually shipped to Rose Morris. A collector friend of mine also had an original 1998. 6 - "They were simply prioritizing U.S. domestic production" - Yes, I completely agree with that. Still I believe that they would have processed the orders from the British distributor on time if they could.
