It looks like you all don’t know what it’s like being a parent. I will be in pain too if my biological daughter wants to stay with the family that kidnapped her. Will she still want to go back if her parents weren’t rich and if she didn’t had a nice childhood? Oo noo, she will blame the bio parents for not finding her sooner.

I cannot believe some of the comments on here with people blaming Janie/Jenny for not being gracious or wanting to be with her bio family. Seriously, did any of you even watch the movie or read the book? Yeah I get the bio parents wanting her back but you can't just expect her to come home and be your daughter again when she doesn't know you. Not to mention unlike many other unfortunate kids, she lived a good life with loving parents--who would want to give that up for strangers? Imagine you go your whole life believing you are one person and that your family that you live with/has raised you (with lots of love and not abused I might add) is yours, you have all your friends/boyfriend and then all the sudden SURPRISE! Turns out you were kidnapped, you're not who you think you are and your family is not your family and oh by the way your entire life is going to be uprooted and you're going to go live with these random strangers who though related to you by blood are not who you would consider family because you don't know them! How would you feel hmm? Bet you all wouldn't act so gracious if your entire life got uprooted like that and suddenly your whole identity gets thrown out the window. Nobody adapts to a situation like that that fast! How about you have some respect for the kidnapped girl who had no idea about all this and is being forced against her will to move in with people who are basically strangers to her and making her live a whole new life. She's scared, confused and rightfully so.

This is basically the same plot as Deep End of the Ocean but different perspective. That movie is told through the parents who lost their child and this one through the abducted child. Both are incredible movies but Deep end of the ocean just hits that spot 😢

People say teenagers aren’t mature enough to deal with these situations. I think you don’t have to be a full grown adult to show empathy to others. She could have tried her best to get to know her biological parents, by sacrificing her own feelings of homesickness and still had a relationship with the parents that raised her. Why couldn’t she consider the suffering her parents endured and the consequences her siblings suffered because of her kidnapping. She was fortunate to have four loving and caring parents in the end why be selfish and hurt her own parents even one more day? It’s heartbreaking really 💔💔💔

I fault the Mom for this because she depended on her older son to keep an eye on her, he pushed her down in the department store, she fell, and they left her; she should of monitored her children better...

In a case such as this, where the stolen child was not taken for the purpose of harm to him/her, it is a good lesson for birth parents to try to think of the person who has taken care of the child, whether it is the grandparents of the thief or the child stealer herself. The child still loves the one who brought him/her up and needs some access to her. Maybe after the person has served her sentence, visitation could be set up for her and the child, if the woman is deemed safe to be around and truly is repentant for her crime and her mental illness is being managed.

The Sands actions were so horrible. Janie hadn't seen them since she was 3 years old and they thought taking her to their house was getting her back. She didn't know them. The Sands took her away from everything and everyone she'd ever known and held her against her will. They kidnapped her again.

it's not in her best interest to just send her back without getting to know them first. yes they are her parents legally and biologically and they want her back but they need to make it as easy for her as well. how about they visit her at first and then work things out. I would think at 16 she would have a say in what happens also.

how did they even enroll her without a birth certificate? and I am guessing that is why the parents don't want her to take drivers ed

Ok for all the confused people. The Jessmonds did not know that Janie was kidnapped. Hannah was the Jessmonds daughter and she kidnapped Janie from the shoe store. The Sands were Janies biological parents. When Hannah showed up at her parents door with Janie it had been a few years since they saw her so they thought Janie was their granddaughter.

Wait. So there's a little red-haired girl missing. So "Janie" goes to scope out the Sands' house and...two red-haired kids get out. It shouldn't be shocking to her that the other Sands kids had red hair too, if the "missing girl" Jennifer had red hair. It doesn't make sense that it would lead to her figuring out her parents had lied.
