I always suggest reversing if possible where you can see the drivers side of the caravan. If unsure get out and walk the site discuss with spotter where you the caravan needs to go. Spotter is better on the drivers side for safety and communication.

Hi Willem, Whilst a rear view camera can be very helpful, if you legally need towing mirrors and cannot use a camera as a replacement.

Never load the heavy weights `concentrated over the axle - loads should be spread evenly over the full length of the platform with a positive bias on the nose up to the limit of the tow bar - you can hang your bikes on the rear of your trailer as long as other weights are spread along the whole floor. Concentrating heavy loads over the axle will increase the risk of an uncontrolled sway since the lighter the ends front and rear are the easier it is for a side wind to push it out of line as in a flywheel effect around the axle centre then the weight over the wheels will add inertia to the return stroke back to the centre of equilibrium. - physical Fact. yet they have not worked this out - I would stand up infront of any one prepared to listen and demonstrate why - so far dumb idiots produce model rolling road that is totally misleading and I could show them why. Until these myths are removed there will be no solution.

I am surprized that no one knows what to do if a caravan or large trailer starts to sway, A swaying caravan or trailer will start steering the car in either direction, Do not try to fight this as you will only make things worse, Lock your arms and steer straight ahead take your foot of the accelerator, do not apply the brakes or accelerate the vehicle, You can apply the trailer brakes if you are able. I have used this method and it does work. If the problem persists you will need to proceed at a slower speed & fit anti sway bars to your vehicle
@Cruner622 жыл бұрын
Hi Barry - when I try to explain how a sway starts and how to stop it - it is falling on deaf ears almost all will not admit they experience snake all the time and just clench their bums and slow down to silly speeds in case others accuse them poor driving, speeding or loading. If you ask many they will say they do all the recommended things and still get bad sway. This is because the advice is wrong and until that is recognised the solution will never get out.

@@philbarnett9274 I can assure you luck is not the answer the definition of luck is when preparation meets opportunity and I have a system fitted that prevents snaking (uncontrolled sway) that many people believe is something that there is no problem that needs fixing, and I can prove this without any doubt that there are myths abounding that needs removing if any action is to be taken. Now I had stopped trying to get the industry to listen for years but have made an attempt to try again but I can see it is not going to work so I give up and will just watch as the incidents keep occurring caused by people like you. I can say without question that most caravan users experience sway every time they set out so the drive around at 50mph clinching their bottoms when/ if they overtake a truck and this need not be so. With a proactive control system it is like driving the vehicle with confidence like the modern braking systems offer.

@Cruner622 жыл бұрын
@@philbarnett9274 Hi Phil Let me explain when you loaded the trailer with the car having a rear engine then that is the reason why it would have been a bad thing to do since the weight would not be distributed on the whole length of the trailer, however if you still had a positive load on the ball up to the maximum the tow bar would allow then that would be ok and as good as it gets without a proactive anti sway in place - you are missing my point. If you understood beams a loads you would know the rules. "Clockwise moments = Anticlockwise moments" to work out with formulae where the axle pivot should be placed as Engineers like myself would have done when they built the trailer. I recognise your wealth of driving experience but like many don't understand engineering practices. If the overhang aft of the axle seems too long it will be for what the trailer was designed to carry ie if it was an artic the axles always seem to have a longer overhang aft of the axles but that is because it was designed to carry pallets evenly along the whole length of the trailer where some of the load is taken by the tractor unit. If you still need answers please reply.

@@aj-qj4lt This is where trucks and caravans differ - a truck and drag as we call them in the UK has a few variations one with a simple pin and yolk some have a 5th wheel turntable, however the weights and mass make sway almost an impossible event as long as the trailer is unloaded first and almost all will have air operated brake systems with ABS incorporated on both truck and trailer. Artics have a separate control valve to act as an emergency brake feature - it is not intended to stop any "sway" because that will never occur, what can occur is jack knife created when/if the trailer brakes fail and the secondary emergency system also fails.
@rspencer94893 жыл бұрын
I think this misses on a couple of key areas. Firstly you do mention the pressure wave from trucks when you are overtaking, but not how significant it is or how to manage a surge. (Applies to overtaking on dual lane carriageways too) Secondly you didn’t mention that being overtaken also gives same effect from truck passing you.

4th option, install stiff suspension at the rear of towing vehicle and it won't allow sway. I did 20 000 safe km with xc70 towing 7 meter camper in every weather and climate. Now towing 2800kg with a Sprinter van with reinforced stiff rear suspension ... 5th option, get a towing vehicle with an old style frame... trailer won't get any possibility for sway

Please see the overhang on the caravan. THAT'S the cause of the sway. TOO BLOODY much overhang. When ordering a caravan or even a box trailer ALWAYS opt for the 60 / 40 rule. If the dealer can't / won't do it your way, go somewhere else. 60 % in front / 40%to the rear. You may still have some slight sway but the combination will be much more controllable. Also use your electric brake controller to apply the trailer brakes. Having said this, if your caravan started to sway you would have both hands on the wheel, your eyes bulging WIDE open and you will be too busy shitting yourself to even think about applying the trailer brakes. Any caravan or trailer that has wheels in the middle, PISS it off.
@Cruner622 жыл бұрын
Warren you are almost there on some parts - Loads should be spread evenly over the full length of the floor front to rear with a positive bias over the nose to the maximum tow bar allowance -. the trailer brakes should never be applied when the trailer is on the return stroke since it will add impetus on the return to equilibrium resulting in the kinetic energy going over centre, here is the algorithm "Apply a force equal and opposite at or before the centre of equilibrium" by applying a braking force only to the "accelerating" wheel not the decelerating one. This can never be achieved manually since there is a risk of wheel lock and then jack knife unless ABS is involved on each wheel. Only one system can achieve this on overrun brakes "Differential Stability"(c) in combination of a double acting hydraulic damper. If ya need more proof ask away I will be pleased to help you if you can follow technical solutions. I would be delighted to go head to head with you to prove that this is the way to go. I am a qualified Transport Engineer of 40 years Experience. This system removes the bum clenching when overtaking a truck.

Are you using 'National Specs' or state legislation figures. Manufacturers will tell you any old rubbish. I recently had 'discussions' with the head office of a large vehicle manufacturer regarding their recommended towbar setup. I also spoke to an independant engineer who told me a completely different story. I took the engineers advice and our van tows great. (loaded correctly) Perth based.
