All that way for just 4 days. What a shame you didn't have longer to explore. Hope you get the chance to come back for longer and get to see a lot more.

I love your enthusiam. A couple of small updates for you. The better wildlife park is Whiteman Park (pronounced Wit-man - dont know why). Its in the Swan Valley - where there are a lot of vineyards, which you can also do day tours to. But a new train line is opening that way soon and theres a stop outside the entrance to Whiteman Park. Also, Im not sure if you know this but theres a bus that goes around rottnest constantly. You can buy a day pass ticket in the information centre just off the jetty on Rottnest. That lets you go all around the island and gives you time to stop at the loveliest beaches and spots, including Cape Vlamingh. When you do that its best to go to the south and south west beaches in the morning and then to the northern shore beaches in the early afternoon. Thats because the sea breeze comes in from the south west so in the early afternoon the south shore beaches become a bit uncomfortable but the north shore beaches are protected from the wind. Just a keep an eye out for the prevailing winds and when they start and go to the side of the island where they arent. Dont go to the island when theres an easterly - all the desert flies get blown out to sea in easterlies and end up on the island. That can be VERY unpleasant. Last, the trainline south ends in Mandurah, on the Peel estuary/inlet. If you go into the town during the day its very pretty and there are good beaches about. Mandurah is easier with a car but you can access it be train and bus. There is a dolphin watching cruise but if you just walk down the footpath from the centre of town, past the Sebel hotel and the old fig tree (you cant miss it) to the mouth of the harbour entrance you will usually see the famous Mandurah pod dolphins playing or fishing. Theyre there pretty much every day except for a few weeks in september/october when they disappear from the area. YOu can get on the dolphin cruise but you can see them just as well from the footpaths along the estuary seawall. You can also occasionally see seals and big rays from there. Theres plenty of little cafes and restaurants etc in Mandurah if you want to eat there (especially at Dolphin Harbour). Mandurah is very pretty and famous for its crabs, the inlet, the canals, and bird sanctuaries. If you have a car, Clifton Lakes has a form of stromatolites. The further out from Perth you go - such as Kalbarri, shark bay to the north, and albany, denmark to the south, the more spectacular the scenery gets.

If you ever come to Perth again, take a train and then maybe an Uber down to Mandurah. It's about 50 minutes south of the city, and there's a zoo there called Ranger Redz Zoo. My daughter-in-law is from Austria and we took her there when she was last here because you can pat and feed the kangaroos and see a lot of other Australian animals, too. It's well worth the trip, and the zoo is small, so it doesn't take very long, and then you can check out the beautiful beaches of Mandurah and the shopping centre, too.

Years ago when backpacking in South America, I met two English lads. On saying I was from Perth, one remarked that I did not sound like I was from Scotland. The other said, No you fool, not that Perth, the other Perth, you know that CLEAN PLACE. I had never thought of my home town that way before, but when he said it I swelled with pride. Yes, that clean sunny place, my home Perth. Thank you for reminding us Perth-ites of the wonders of our city.

Ugly city. 90% of the city is just suburbs which all looks the same. City is boring. Only Freemantls is beautiful. Public transport is also garbage. City is not well connected. Do not listen to her.

I hate Perth. Horrible scorching hot, super expensive and housing/rent is appalling. Oh, and everything is over governed to the max. They have rules for their rules in Perth. Its probably ok if you're a well off middle class boring twat. And please be careful of the knife crime there...

I am Perth born and raised, and very pleased that you seem so genuinely happy to have visited. It is a shame, though, to have come so far and not really been able to get up close and personal with some of our more endearing fauna. As others have noted, quokkas are by nature most active at dawn and dusk, though the recent trend of people wanting to capture a selfie with a quokka seems to be causing them to alter their activity patterns to be somewhat more active through the day. As an adolescent, camping on Rottnest (during the mid 1980s), they would be very thick on the ground, fossicking between the tents for any food scraps that one might have dropped (not to mention any backpacks they could break into!) But the best place to see kangaroos, right up close, is at the Perth Zoo. This is in South Perth, pretty much directly across the river from the Central Business District (head to the Barrack St Jetty, from which you can catch a ferry to the other side, then it is about a kilometre walk to the zoo). Unfortunately, entry to the zoo is _not_ free, but they have a number of kangaroos in an enclosure through which you are free to wander, and they are sufficiently accustomed to people that there is a pretty good chance that they will come and check you out. It is worth spending as much of a day there as you can spare, so you can be around when they are being fed-they really are quite extraordinary creatures-and it will also give you the opportunity to check out my favourite bird, the Tawny Frogmouth!

I presume by now you have been informed kangaroos are marsupials they sleep all day and are awake all night. Next time you come take a 10 minute ride out on the freeway north come off at Warwick rd left next turn is Pinnaroo valley crematorium. Drive through to the lakes at rear around 4.30 onwards, you will see at least a dozen or more kangaroos feeding on the grass very active. Thank you for your kind words for our city.

Bless you for the great n exciting review. I’m 58 and have lived in Perth all my life. Sadly Perth is seen as “boring” and most people go to the eastern states of Australia to see Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane…I do agree Perth restaurants etc close early as compared to eastern states so looking for places late at night is hard. I guess being born in Perth I’m kinda like, Blahhh… but I have to say it is beautiful, less crazy like larger cities and has enough for me. Our beaches are some of the most gorgeous in the world and Kings Park is apparently the largest natural park;and in a CBD in the world {hope I got that right lol}…..glad you had a brill time here hun….😊
