Lithium-ion batteries consist of an anode (typically made of graphite), a cathode (usually containing lithium cobalt oxide or similar materials), and an electrolyte solution. During charging, lithium ions move from the positive electrode (cathode) to the negative electrode (anode) through the electrolyte. When discharging, this process reverses. When a lithium-ion battery is charged to its maximum capacity, the cathode reaches a state where it's fully loaded with lithium ions. Further attempts to force more ions into the cathode can lead to unwanted side reactions, such as the formation of lithium metal deposits called "plating." These deposits can cause the battery to lose capacity and become less stable over time. Additionally, the electrolyte can degrade due to overcharging, leading to the formation of gases and potentially causing the battery to swell or even catch fire in extreme cases. To mitigate these risks and prolong the battery's lifespan, phone manufacturers implement charging algorithms that control the charging process. These algorithms typically stop charging the battery when it reaches around 90-95% capacity, leaving a buffer to prevent overcharging and minimize stress on the battery components. By stopping the charging process before reaching full capacity, the battery's chemistry is better preserved, reducing the likelihood of degradation and prolonging its overall lifespan.
