I was hoping that you might be interested in looking at some stations of the cross that I have from a convent in NY. The Sisters have all passed away and there are no more religious sisters in this Order. The Sisters were among the very first social justice organizations in NYC to take in women off of the streets in 1890 (before they became religious sisters and were non-sectarian) and out of prisons and reform and reclaim these women into leading good lives. In 1903 they became a religious order and have housed over 100,000 women without fee or application, ending the cycle of recidivism and needing to engage in prostitution in order to stay off of the cold street. They also provided housing to young teen girls that aged out of orphanages and provided all of these women with the opportunity to work as laundresses, doing the laundry for as many people as they could get accounts for. And for women that had been considered undesirable at that time to have received recommendations of good character from the sisters meant that these women could branch out and leave the mission of the Sisters convent and lives and find work and marry. The final religious Sister is actually somebody that many have been stating is going to be up for canonization and that process will begin in September 2025. We have their stations of the cross and they are in disrepair. They are plaster they were never meant to be outdoors, but they stood outdoors for one century and so they are now 102 years old, according to the paperwork. They are to be gifted to a local Catholic charity hospital, which happens to be cardinal Dolans hospital of choice, and by this memorial park for which they are going to be placed outdoors at their new home at the hospital in memorial to the sisters, we get to be able to increase the endowment that the sisters have left, which will ensure the health of the community which the sisters loved so much. Do you think that you have any interest in working in this? The memorial will last in perpetuity as it will be a secret space blessed by his eminence. And we have even chopped down the trees that were planted at their final convent that we know for a fact, we’re planted by the sisters since the, entirety of it will be knocked down and made into apartment buildings anyway. And those trees are being mailed into which there will be a bench for every single station of the cross made out of the trees that the sisters planted in 1922 at their novitiate. I could use someone with your skill and as this will be a very large memorial site, every single hand that has been part of this memorial will have their name as part of the plaque that will be about 5 feet tall on a boulder that’s about 10 feet tall and flat And will be there permanently. so if you have any interest in discussing this further, please contact me. Great. Finally someone who understands painting. So many of these restoration video "after" photos are so flat and lifeless because the restorer doesn't understand washes, blending, etc. I'm actually stunned by how bad some of them are. I know of a 100-year old statue that was restored for a basilica in the Midwest. It is flat, dull, boring and it was a very expensive "restoration."

Great work. I've been asked to restore a statue and I had a difficult time hearing the type of paint you used in the video. Would you mind sharing the exact paint and varnish you used for the project?

Hi Denise. I just got a beautiful virgin Mary very old chalk/ plaster statue. It has quite a bit of damage and some of the plaster is very fragile where paint has come away. What is the best product to use to strengthen the fragile plaster( its kind of like honeycombed if that makes sense ..? I don't want to repaint it. I like it's age and it's story in that, but I do want to preserve it so it doesn't get any worse. It is very dull, which I also like. So do t want anything shiny that will ruin it's look. One is the divine child and his face had some scratches but I don’t know how to make the color and on the base , is a square but is broken on the edges, what material can I use to make the square again you said plaster and ?? That’s beautiful work Denise. You also did s phenomenal job on his gun. You really did your research, as the gunstock looks like a real camel gun musket stock. I’m currently working on Our Lady of Fatima, and I’d like to know what mixture you used with plaster and spackle to create a workable plaster putty.

can u please tell me the glue i have to use to connect the head of a statue to the neck; the head is quite heavy but no chalk fragments broken at all. thank you.

That looks great and your sculpting in the hand looks really good. I like that you didn’t repaint the entirely, but left some of the original patina. I also liked the sheer washes on the face. Well done!

Looks really good. May l ask how you would clean a plain (no colour) chalkware where someone has started to paint an outline and then left it - how would l get rid of the colour could l use the likes of vinegar?

Did you just swap a damaged one for undamaged one. Like a cooking show " here's one I prepared earlier". 😉 I have a hawaiian lady lamp from the 50s or 60s tretchikoff era , she needs repainting what paint is used for chalkware? I can't get much information about the paint they used. Her skin colour is a haunting grey tone looks like the living dead I wouldn't alter that or her hair but just her clothing and daisy in her hair. Obi wan kenobi your my only hope!!!

Well done! I am looking for information on doing a little bit of touchup on a few of our church's antique nativity figures; no pieces are seriously damaged, just a few nicks out of robes and a sheep is missing an ear. The majority of the repairs will be paint touchups, but for the deeper damages, what type of plaster do you recommend? Pottery plaster #1? Hydrocal? I feel like some sort of putty would be "just right" to fill in the spots. Not too runny, easily sculptable. Thoughts?

I suddenly have a chalkware project myself: a vintage Facsimiles LTD plaque my mother gave to me many years ago fell from where it was hanging and broke. I’ve fitted the pieces I could find together and along with watching your helpful video, I’ve read I could fix it with Elmers glue. Hello, I just found you video by searching for plaster restoration. Amazing job! I am going to attempt to fix the cartouche (decorative part on top of an antique mirror) that is missing some parts from when the mirror fell. It is plaster and has some wire running through similar to the hand in this video. I watched the video and read all the comments so I think I have it: I use plaster and joint compound/spackle, the little putty carver tool, denatured alcohol if needed, shellac and paint (likely oil paint for me). When do I apply the shellac? Thank you!

I also repair church statues. This is a wonderful video. Blessing's to you for all you did. I love doing this kind of work.
