Idiotic statements. Lucretius mentions the gods as existing in a state of bliss and therefore uninterested or unable to respond to human requests. The Epicurean model as we have it is one that recognizes the gods as material beings quite apart from humans, so far apart that the two do not and cannot interact. Humans are on their own as a result. Of course this is the exact opposite of what we find in the Bible and both judaism and Christianity, so Lucretius and the Epicureans must be condemned as irreconcilable to the Word od God. Just say that rather than interjecting a lot of stuff that doesn't belong. It doesn't change the fact that one is a puerile fantasy....

I have lots of respect for anyone who can recite Hopkins from memory, but it's kind of cringey to see this continuous appeal to solve problems with things from the past that were just as problematic back then. The speaker who's reciting poetry as a cultural salve is also endorsing Plato, the autocrat who idealized a city without artists, especially poets, including I presume Hopkins. Somehow the deplorables indulge in tacky modern culture because it's easier than reading Shakespeare; would that be the same Shakespeare who, along with his fellow Elizabethan playwrights, was always on the verge of being forbidden to stage plays because not a few Christians argued that moral decadence (yes, people, there were cultural wars in the 1600s; yes, there were conservative curmudgeons who saw cultural decadence everywhere then) and the theater went in hand?

1 Behold the Bridegroom cometh in the middle of the night, And blest is he whose loins are girt, whose lamp is burning bright; But woe to that dull servant, whom the Master shall surprise With lamp untrimmed, unburning and with slumber in his eyes. 2 Do thou, my soul, beware, beware lest thou in sleep sink down, Lest thou be given o’er to death, and lose the golden crown; But see that thou be sober, with a watchful eye, and thus Cry, "Holy, holy, holy God, have mercy upon us!" 3 That day, the day of fear, shall come; my soul, slack not thy toil, But light thy lamp, and feed it well, and make it bright with oil; Who knowest not how soon may sound the cry at eventide, "Behold the Bridegroom comes! Arise! He come to meet the Bride!" 4 Beware, my soul! take thou good heed lest thou in slumber lie, And, like the five, remain without, and knock, and vainly cry; But watch, and bear thy lamp undimmed, and Christ shall gird thee on His own bright wedding robe of light,--the glory of the Son.

Going to watch that one again. Started on Newman’s ‘Development’ and couldn’t follow without a great effort. This was a great help. Thank you. I vaguely remember Chesterton saying something about Newman countering some of the uses made of the theory of evolution years before it was formulated by Darwin.

16:15 "false distinction between religious and civil marriage" If these really are one in the same, then marriage has no place as a civil institution *at all.* Society should not be enlisted into validating your cultic practices. It's totally contrary to the establishment clause. Now, you *could* have avoided gay marriage by eliminating marriage as a government institution. It was a proposal. John Kerry had that position, for example. You could've protected the "purity" of "your" institution by keeping it internal to your churches. You can't ask the government to implement your practices and then demand they implement them exactly how your cult prescribes. If your religion actually owned this, then your religion should've been taking full responsibility for it *from the beginning.* Either have your cake or eat it.

Nobody *owns* children. When you talk about governmental authorities claiming the state "owns" children, you are almost always misrepresenting their views and projecting your own sick attitudes. Outside the religious right, this idea of "owning" children is considered gross. Almost no one else talks this way. If you run a search of "who owns children" in KZbin, just about all of what comes up are religious people asserting parents "own" children. Few or none claim the government does, because the only people who talk about this stuff in terms of ownership are creepy religious people. Just about everyone else understands that (a) nobody owns anyone (child or otherwise) and (b) that parents have *obligations* not "rights" (certainly not rights of ownership). They have a duty towards their kids and their right to be involved extends only insofar as they faithfully perform that duty.

"we were being deliberately provocative. We weren't suggesting that parents were the owners of children." Ahhh. Did someone call you out on that in the chat? If you don't think parents own children, then just don't use that language. Period. No one other than you guys suggests that *anyone* owns children, so you have no excuse to be talking like that. Stop trying to offload responsibility by insinuating that anyone but you thinks or acts in these terms.

12:50 This was my favorite thing about Dostoevsky's The Idiot. That Mishkin was such an aberration to their perception of the world that they instinctively mocked him but without even being conscious of it they were also drawn to him. They didn't even know how desperately they wanted that earnest goodness in their lives until it was presented to them. You don't know what you don't know.

Jesus is the only rock, Cephas ( Peter ) was a stone, Wonder deeply about the water that came out of the rock at HOREB ( the mountain of God) when it was smited. 1 Corinthians 10:4 “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” Exodus 17:6 “Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.” Deuteronomy 32:4 “He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.” Deuteronomy 32:18 “Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.” Deuteronomy 32:15 “But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.” Deuteronomy 32:30 “How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?” Deuteronomy 32:31 “For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.” Galatians 2:7 “But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;” Galatians 2:8 “(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)” Galatians 2:9 “And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.”

Do you see the irony in the title? "Catholics, intolerance...""? Really? The catholics' platform of non-involvement during the holocaust, the Spanish Inquisition of the 1400's effectively labeling the century: "The Dark Ages", the catholics' treatment of women, their LONG-STANDING HISTORY OF RAPING CHILDREN, hiding the offenders by giving them new jobs, murdering orphans in Scotland, slave labor of unwed child mothers, the list is ENDLESS! The word, "INTOLERANCE" is practically written in Latin above every crucifix in every cathedral and church around the WORLD! And you have the AUDACITY to claim the gay community is FORCING THEIR VIEWS on YOU?! Dude. Look up the word, HYPOCRISY! You might learn something. After that, GO SEE A FREAKING DENTIST! For the love of PETE! That mouth looks like 2 picket fences in a hurricane when you talk too fast! No wonder you hate gays. There isn't a gay that would hit on you unless they had beer goggle laser surgery and you were covered in money and good shoes! Just because you aren't pretty, doesn't mean you can poo poo those that are when they won't give you the time of day. Try hooking up with Sean Vaughn! He has a church! And he's a closet case, too! He was arrested for fraud when he was an insurance agent, but at least he's not a priest that diddles cub scouts! You two would be the cutest ugly couple since Sharon and Ozzy! Tell him I said you should chat!

I noticed that any thing to do with a racial category like 'nation' has not even been used. He also does not mention the phrase "the moral order". For the moral order does not include 'mankind'. De Koninck seems to have made up his own definitions of what virtue is. In Latin, originally, 'virtus' had NO moral meaning whatsoever. In II Peter 1:5 the author says, "Supplement The Faith with Arete". Now arete does have moral meaning and its definitions were solidified before it was said there. Why are Roman Catholics so determined to rewrite history and definitions of words? For the Arete of righteousness uses the Greek term 'patrida' translated as 'fatherland', blood and soil. Yet, we skip and dance around this part! The Common Good is the Common Good of one's kin society, one's nation. That is the moral order. Another thing missing is the word "duty". There is just a lot of weasel words, redefinitions, and the heresy of globalization in this talk. I call it no good.

First and only 37 minutes late, nice guest and fascinating topic. Edit: Maria Theresia was not instantly Empress and there never was a Kingdom of Austria. The Bavarians got elected Holy Roman Emperor and the Hungarian Crown was also not hereditary and she had to beg for Hungarian help which they mostly gave and that kept Hungary on side for a while. She was later coronated. As for First World War, while I reckon King William's War (1688-1697) is an earlier candidate, the scale was undoubtedly less so maybe this one. The claimants ought to be that war, Queen Anne's War (1702-1713) and King George's War (1744-1748). Edit2: I am glad Mr Pearce got the point about the French revolution, it was awful however the Church was being assailed by secular powers in the name of enlightened interests by the way, Priests were persecuted worse than in protestant countries by that point, monasteries were forcibly closed, Papal authority was asphyxiated and yet through all human disaster the Church rose again. Ultramontanism was codified in the Church, religious expression flowered and many previously unseen people were brought into the fold, many Vietnamese for example. Write what you will, He really battered those crooked edges.

This is not the best advertisement for Thomas More College. Pater Edmund Waldstein is reading to the students. His voice is bland without any passion or interest. There is so much to say about the Common Good that is interactive and exciting in today's world. I doubt that many people would apply based on this video. Always put your best foot forward to attract investigative minds. E, Maloney-O

I disagree. The topic is interesting in and of itself, and he has a measured delivery. I think a truly investigative mind will attend to what is being said here, and those who need the 'honey to help the wormwood go down', won't. These small catholic colleges tend to have more applicants than they can accept, rather than the other way around, anyway.
