I was 17 when this movie first came out in theaters - which was back in 1997. Watching it through the eyes of the 17 year old kid that I was, just about all of its biblical references and correlations went straight over my head. Watching it again at 44 years old, I was utterly blown away and moved beyond words. What I didn't realize then that I do now was what the Devil's ultimate end-goal was in this move (which doesn't become clear until towards the end) and that was to effectively persuade Kevin into fornicating (and therefore impregnating) that of his half-sister - for the sole purpose of perpetually creating what would become the Anti-Christ. Because Kevin and his half sister were the devil's half blooded offspring - their own offspring would have created the full blooded demon the devil needed to become his perfect anti christ - not a child of God's. The whole caveat was that because God gives all of His children the gift of free will - the choice was up to Kevin and his half sisters volition of how the devil's desperately wanted end game was going to play out. While the half sister clearly chose the side of the Devil - Kevin was hesitant. Kevin's realization that the devil needed Kevins gift of free will to choose what the devil wanted - and that without it, the devil's plan couldn't possibly come into fruition. Kevin puts the same gun that had once belonged to his murderous client, up to his head and he pulls the trigger resulting in his own suicide. Kevin choosing to kill himself, symbolized his choosing to deny the devil and therefore his choice in choosing God. This is immediately followed by all chaos ensuring - the devil is enraged with vengeful spite and malignant anger - causing all of those who chose to put their faith into him - to ultimately burn and perish into ash - which symbolized the after life of eternal hell.

I really enjoyed this film, it uses the book to warn about being overly zealous, and portrays it in a way few actually can see, the reason corso went about unharmed despite being the focal point, is that he was always skeptical about the devil and religion in general, because of that, he wasn't ever chasing the devil, he was chasing the TRUTH, and because of that, the lord protected him and, after much trials and tribulation, gave him the answer he sought, and when he got said answers, he turned away from it, and stayed on his path. Truly beautiful messages.

Balkan merely tailed Corso---Corso was actually doing stuff, pratically acting out that which was depicted in the engravings, whereas Balkan did nothing...nothing to earn passage through the final gate; in other words, he hadn't passed through any of the first 8 gates, but Corso had, and his final act of lust (as depicted in the engraving) was the ninth gate, which welcomed him. And note, Corso didn't even need to perform that pointless ritual that got Balkan killed, he simply approaches and the 9th gate opens.

The question that I had was: What if Dad Meiks was always under a demonic influence disguised as an angel of light? While the people he was after were certainly bad, the purpose of the demonic entity might have always been to exacerbate and continue the spiral of murderous negativity in the world, from which it fed upon (after all, Fenton's insanity was probably triggered by trauma, as he would not have become a serial killer if it wasn't for the twisted turn of events induced by the strange entity). I thought about it, but unfortunately the movie gives you enough clues about the higher purpose of Dad Meiks' rampage of justice. For example, blood never stained their clothes after the killings except when they murdered a normal person (an unfortunate and undesired event caused by Fenton's disbelief). So in that case, what was the lesson here regarding Fenton's skepticism? That disbelief, lack of faith, attachment to the laws and customs of men, the inability to connect with the divine are signs of... diabolical influence.
