Best one yet. Thanks for the chord and string pattern. I've been playing so long and I have been trying to get this great song from start to the end! I'll have to watch and study this at least 30 times, and then I think I can get it!

Thank you so much for the response. I'm a huge Gordon Lightfoot fan and I've been trying to play the song 'Beautiful ' and ' If You Could Read My Mind' for the longest time. I would bet that you would play these songs so wonderful! My issue is I do not like to use a capo and Gordon Lightfoot uses the Capo a lot.

Another way, in my opinion the most accurate way on the fly, is to do the 5th fret harmonic on the lower string, and the 7th fret harmonic of the higher string.
@robsguitarschool2 күн бұрын
That’s a great way to do it too.

Hahaha, I was driving myself insane a couple of days ago because I thought that *all* the strings had to be the 5th above. Now I know I was just busting myself for no reason. Why is the e string like that?

G*
@robsguitarschool7 күн бұрын
Hey there! That’s a good question about the G string tuning. The guitar was first made as a strumming instrument so it was all about chord shapes. If all of the strings were tuned in 4ths you’d end up with a tuning of E A D G C F, which means you wouldn’t be able to do barre chords. By having a major 3rd between the G and B strings, you can lay your finger all the way across to make a barre chord (tuning E A D G B E). With this tuning the thinnest string is the same note as the thickest string, and the second thinnest string is the 5th of the barre chord being played. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. ~ Rob

But on a bass guitar, the fifth fret trick is harder (being a bass, lower note ranges = harder to compare against each other) so one free trick (only works well in a quiet room) is to compare the harmonics between adjacent string pairs: 7th fret harmonic on the upper string, compare to (by playing both simultaneously) 5th fret harmonic on the lower string. Which, of course, works for guitar string pairs except on either pair with B string.... if you can hear those higher/harmonic notes. Those small devices that clamp onto your tuning head are also very cool, great for professionals/gigs, not as much fun as old school comparing string pairs, but a BIG win with the not-free devices is: you and your other guitar/bass band members can all get to the same result (eg A = 440hz and all other notes ) independently... hoping your keyboardist has agreeable equipment, and if not, tune one note of your guitar/bass to your keyboardist, and use the harmonic pair trick.

Wow! Thanks Doug for the great insight on tuning with the bass. Our shorts here are intended to inform people who are new or interested in playing so we don’t get into much detail. Your detail is much appreciated. Thanks for being a fellow teacher! ~ Rob

Can I use a pick to avoid callises
@robsguitarschoolАй бұрын
Hey there! A pick will Avoid callouses in your picking hand. You will still get callouses on your fretting hand. If you’re worried about blisters, when you play, play to the point where you think that if you play any further you might get a blister. At that point stop playing and wait until the next day. Keep on doing this and your fingers will toughen up so you won’t have to worry about blisters.

Hey Quinn! Yes, my brother still plays and he’s a fantastic player. Seeing as I started teaching him after I had been playing 6 months, he’s been playing and gigging for 42 1/2 years. He also occasionally teaches workshops at our guitar school. I’ve also been in a few bands with him too. :)

@@robsguitarschoolwow what a great story! My brother and I started learning on our own together during the pandemic. I was amazed how quickly my brother was progressing in comparison to me. Sadly he fell out of love with it and hasn’t picked it back up. I still continue to mill around on it every night, hopefully one day he’ll start playing again. I’d love to teach him all the new things I’ve learned!
@robsguitarschoolАй бұрын
Yup, I’m sure he’ll pick it up again at some point. As you know, guitar is all about having fun, and when he sees you having fun playing guitar, he’ll want to pick it up again too. We all have our own path as we learn to play guitar (or anything, for that matter). You have yours and he has his. I’m sure your paths will cross again at some point. Do you think that Paul Simon cared about all this? Or did he create this because he had talent?
@robsguitarschool2 ай бұрын
Hey there!, Good questions. He definitely is supremely talented. I think he had fun using his talent to create great songs like this one. I’m thinking he probably tried not to care too much about what people thought about what he created. He just had fun writing music that he liked. That’s my two cents. What do you think? ~ Rob
@alancumming640728 күн бұрын
@@robsguitarschool I think you are right. His songs were/are carefully and beautifully crafted and I guess that is a lonely process. He would probably have written those songs whether anyone liked them or not. I think that is the best way to be creative.
