Thanks 🙏🏽 a lot for the great playlist on the subject of the Viable System Model. You explained everything so well and easy to understand. So my sincere complements and I when you have time in the near future, make more videos because the world needs more understanding on the VSM 💪🏼❤️

4:56 you draw the regulator and management unit outside the circle on higher recursion level and inside the circle on the lower recursion level. I mean something is wrong. It’s confusing. What correct? Can please clarify that. Thank you 🙏
@MarkLambertz
@MarkLambertz 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing out this detail! And before I answer I want to admit: It is sometimes also confusing to me too :-) My answer (or interpretation): It depends! In theory there is a regulator within the operation and at the same time a regulator which belongs to the overarching management. Sorry that I made this not clear.

Mark, thank you so much for your videos. You have clearly got a mastery of the subject and a great ability to simplify complex issues. Your videos are excellent. I am working my way through them now. I've always liked the VSM model (although I certainly don't have any real depth of understanding) but find it heavy on theory and concepts. As an idea for a future video, and hopefully you plan more, may I suggest something? Could you take something as a worked example (apologies if you have...I'm still working my way through your great videos); perhaps you could do a worked example with an institution like the European Union, a government or a company and map it out - how it would fit into VSM? So, for example, take the EU. I'd be stuck understanding if the Commission was the operations part, the co-ordination part or the management. It could fit into all parts. What about the European Parliament? It's not really management - nor operations. I appreciate that VSM is about the functions more than the particular roles - that's why I said it looks theoretical. Hence, a real example would be very helpful. I suggested the EU because I guess most people in Europe will be familiar with it no matter where they come from. Thank you again for your first class videos. Paul
@MarkLambertz
@MarkLambertz 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul at first thanks for your encouraging words. Secondly, yes I will produce from now on (mostly) exemplary applications / interpretations. Regarding the EU: This is a difficult example for me, since I don’t know enough about all the institutions and their respective functions. I already tried some years ago a mapping, but I stopped it because I lacked the know-how. Nevertheless, I try to answer it. It depends from where you start in terms of recursion. When I think about the political Union as such (Brussels, Luxembourg and the member states) I would see the commission as a governance function, something between System 3 and System 5. And here a first example on how to use the VSM in the context of an Agile software development field: intelligente-organisationen.de/viable-system-model-example More will follow!

@@MarkLambertz Wow, thank you for the link Mark. That looks very interesting. I will block out some time to go through it tomorrow. On the EU, sorry, I did reflect later on what I had put. I think that if anyone mapped the EU to VSM then they would need to start off about aged 10 - and if they were lucky, their great, great grandchildren may get to the half way stage. I was just thinking of a very high level. But your model in the link is better and I am looking forward to reading that. Thank you so much for coming back to me. Best wishes, Paul

@@pauls7056 Hi Paul. I was introduced to the VSM a few months ago by a colleague. We are currently using it within some of the work we are doing. If you have not already I highly recommend taking the time to read Stafford Beer's original work "The Brain of the Firm". This book is challenging to get through - lengthy explanations - but once I got through it (over the course of a couple months) I had a much better understanding of the model and Stafford's thoughts. Another good, more recent book is one by Patrick Hoverstadt called "The Fractal Organization" - I have read that book as well and it is well worth the read. I continue to go back to these books, along with videos on KZbin by Stafford and Patrick to help firm up my understanding. Good luck!

@@johnnysimdude1966 Hi John. How nice of you to take the time to provide some helpful suggestions. I do have Professor Beer's book - all of his series in fact. But, looking good on the shelf was as far as I got with them. That was before I knew much about the VSM model. I dived right in and found it looked daunting. Now, I'm more comfortable with the VSM model and you are right. I think things will slot into place now. But where in the house is the book! :D I'll find it. Thanks again for your suggestions. That's definitely what I am going to do.

@MarkLambertz
@MarkLambertz 7 жыл бұрын
