The Nakalele blowhole is such a magical place! But all the tourists standing right next to it made me so nervous. Last thing we need is more people hurting themselves there and having another area we can't go to because it's “dangerous" 😢 So if you visit, stay far away from any wet areas! You can feel the mist from it from quite a distance, no need to endanger yourself or others. People have been swept away here, stay safe! ❤

For years the rivers were piped into oceans and lakes to keep the water level consistent as you can see the water levels are back. California Pacificades have finished . Now this area has. The trees growing on the sides of the cliffs are the markers to where the lands were extended outwards into the waters. I'm glad to see that the rivers decided to take care of their own needs instead of worrying about the wants of others. I hope if others decide to this to them again ; nature will not be as patient or as kind that she has been in the past. . ....be grateful for what you have ; instead of building what you cannot.

As an Erosion expert - all of this could have been avoided with proper engineering and planning. Unfortunately, our Maui and Hawaiian govt have taken bribes for years and this is the result. It's going to get worse.

Lining pockets is what these developers care about, along with certain politicians. As long as there's land, they will always find a way to make money off it despite the damage it causes. The proof is in the sandbags
@TheTravelBugBite4 күн бұрын
I guess the problem is that the developers make money when they build, even if it will be destroyed in the long run. Insurance company is in businesses will be the ones paying for that cost, not the developers… maybe that’s a solution? Make the developers pay for the insurance.

I agree it's happened every year for the last four years straight now when we get these Kona storms. This time around it's the worst I've seen it, though. Every time it happens, the damage to S. Kihei Road is worse than the time before. Four years ago, erosion from one of these storms ate a tiny little nibble off the shoulder of S Kihei Rd across Isana. They just painted the center road lines to arch around the spot for a while and otherwise let traffic through as normal anyway before they fixed it. The next year there was a storm, a significantly bigger chunk of the road washed out in the same area where the manhole cover is, and the loss to the road was big enough that they completely closed that section of S Kihei Rd between Ohukai and Kaonoulu for a few weeks. In that same storm, there was also a bit of shoulder of the road loss near the bridge by the intersection with Kaonoulu. Lengths of guardrails washed away, too. Now with the new storm, a -lot- more length of road was washed out, plus the first damage to the road across the ABC store/Sugar Beach Bakery. Those stores keep getting flooded out in these storms and are closed for weeks. I don't know how many more times they will tolerate doing that before they move or rebuild their location on stilts. And then when all that mud dries, it blows in the wind making outdoor exercise awful with all that nasty dust in the air. This is not sustainable.
@TheTravelBugBite4 күн бұрын
Well said! I don’t think this is really unique to Maui either. I mean, just look at the wildfires. No controlled burns, no investment in preventative measures, just billions of dollars every time there’s a disaster. It really is a slap in the face to the native people who understood the land so well.
@bmolitor6156 күн бұрын
this looks like more damage than usual - solid hits all thru from Menehune to Sugar Beach, multiple places the asphalt chewed away, usually it's one or two channels the most get chewed up some...
@TheTravelBugBite5 күн бұрын
Yeah definitely more than usual; but also different kind of damage. It always depends how far north the storm goes. Crazy that the whole road cracked open.
