Very interesting that Polk was defeated for governor in his home state of Tennessee more than once. What was really interesting was that Polk won the Presidential election but at the same time lost Tennessee.

Thaddeus Stevens was obsessed with punishing the south. The Confederacy had been militarily crushed by the Union armies commanded by Grant and Sherman. The war was over. General Lee wanted to become an American citizen again. Why was the vote taken away from southerners? The African Americans could vote but whites couldn’t because they happened to be white? Does that make any sense? Why were governors installed in the southern states without an election? Is that fair? Reconstruction was a disaster for both the north and the south. The occupation of the south by the military after the war was a disaster. All of these punishing policies created resentment and when the remaining troops were withdrawn what happened?White supremacy started which was unfortunate especially for the south. The punishing Reconstruction policies directed at the south started white supremacy and segregation and the terrible violence against African Americans. Slavery was immoral, the south never should have seceded from the Union, but the south surrendered and the war was over. But the war was not over as far as Thaddeus Stevens was concerned. He was determined to punish the south, take away the vote from whites while at the same time giving the African Americans the vote. Reconstruction helped to bring about white supremacy, violence against African Americans, and segregation which lasted until well into the twentieth century. Reconstruction and Thaddeus Stevens was not good for America.

Buchanan’s Secretary of War John Floyd was a crook. Buchanan fired him and he was indicted a couple of times for fraud. He was a disgrace who abused his office. George Washington would have been appalled at Floyd’s actions.

Brown was wrong. Killing people because they were pro slavery was not the answer. Violence breeds more violence and becomes a vicious cycle. He accomplished nothing by his raid on Harpers Ferry except more casualties including his son. Brown and today’s Black Lives Matter are the same.

"The South must be punished under the rules of war, its land confiscated--nothing less". Quote from "The Tragic Era" by Claud G. Bowers, copyright 1929. After effects of the devastated South were not enough for Thaddeus; he wanted punishment for all, including the 2/3 who never owned slaves and who didn't rebel but fought in defense against the invading demon Sherman who "Made Georgia HOWL". The South got its punishment all right, I know, because I grew up there. Even in the 1950's the punishment was still evident, especially in my rural home, where kids still went to school with no shoes, and who's homes had an outdoor privy instead of a modern bathroom, and where the most common health problem for children, both white and black was hookworm, spread by walking barefoot near those outdoor privies. My father was principal of one of those rural schools where 100% of the kids tested positive for hookworm, which saps the energy and retards growth and development. I guess Thaddeus would have been happy to hear that. Don't know if Lydia would have been happy to know that or not. I prefer first-hand eye-witness books on history, not afterwards speculation. P.S., only 12.5% of southerners served in the Confederate army. And did you know that there were blacks who owned slaves? One in Louisiana had more slaves than most white slave owners! Shhhhh! don't tell. btw, NY City, Detroit, now have "BLACK RULE", So does Haiti. How's that working out? And how's Africa doing these days? Google "World IQ MAP".

What officially caused Buchanan’s death was respiratory failure. I mean he was having trouble breathing and was suffering from rheumatic ghaut. On top of that, he had pneumonia.

I was my hair once a week, I think it really depends on a person's hair type and how sweaty you got, like I work indoors and I have wavy but thick thick hair, so I don't produce oil as fast as someone with straight hair. My husband has really fine, soft, straight hair and he has to wash his daily

Hi Stephanie, I live in RI and know she died in 1903 in Narragansett. Do you know if the cottage is still there? It seems that Narragansett must have been the place to get away from it all then. I recently found out that Jefferson Davis' daughter died in Narragansett just 4 yrs. earlier at a large hotel that was eventually destroyed by fire.

I thoroughly enjoyed the video on You Tube.. I want to add that Mr. Urban was a member of the Lancaster Elk's Lodge. I'm not sure when he may have joined, but in 1907 the Elks purchased 219 N. Duke St. Mr Urban was the architect and served on the committee for the remodeling of the building when the Grille room was added to the back of the building on the first floor as well as a large ballroom on the second floor, also two bowling alleys in the basement. He was a member until his death in 1939, so it's quite possible he may have designed the front of the building when the new entrance on Duke St was added as well as the dining room and Empire room. That was done in 1933.

I want to ad that People's Skating Rink was opened on 6/28/1907 while Rocky's was opened on 7/4/1907. Given the similarity of the two rinks, it's quite possible that Mr. Urban was the architect for both rinks although I could not find anything in the newspapers to confirm that. There was an article that negotiations were concluded on 6/15/1907 by H.B. Griffiths, the manager of Rocky Springs and E. M. Cooper of Coney Island for a magnificent roller skating rink, to be erected where the tennis court formerly was at Rocky Springs Park. Amazing that it was apparently built in about one month.

The location of the General Tire Co. was at the intersection of Marietta Ave and West Orange St. Also the Steamboat House was at the corner of Columbia Ave and Marietta Ave. That information is from the pictures you show from Lancaster History org. Also Peoples Skating Rink was not in Rocky Springs, he had his own park across the Conestoga from Rocky. The picture with the bus in front of the skating rink was opened i on 2/21/1948. Also West Orange St and West King Street never meet, it does meet with Columbia Ave and that is shown on an 1875 map.

Part of the reason Lancaster has supported the arts is that historically this area has produced or nurtured artists in every field of art. From colonial times to now, talent has shown itself in Lancaster County. Maybe its in the water. I thought this was a well presented program and I'm looking forward to the next one. Thank you.

This was an excellent talk. Explained the context of the election, and the major issues at play. The fact that Pierce would prove a strict constructionist and veto a lot of infrastructure bills was also a factor that helped alienate Northern and Northwestern Democrats. I would have been interested to learn more about Scott as the Whig Candidate. I recall reading that the Whigs tried to woo Irish votes away from the Democratic Party but Scott was smeared for ordering the San Patricio Battalion executions!

Hi Ben! We know that the right chamber was used by the original owner of Wheatland, William Jenkins, and his family because he had multiple children of varying ages (hence the varying seat heights and widths). We believe the the left chamber, which has three adult-size seats, was used by the domestic servants. We base this belief on the knowledge that there was class separation in early America at the time of William Jenkins. Thanks for your comment!

He sent a fleet to Paraguay to force them to pay compensation and apologize for killing a U.S. sailor, prevented the Pig War from escalating into a serious crisis or an actual war, and successfully hosted the young Prince of Wales during an important visit. So that's something I guess. Although Buchanan's presidency was unquestionably a failure, he did have a few successes.
