The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky Summary The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a coming-of-age story told through a series of letters written by Charlie, an introverted and sensitive high school freshman. Set in the early 1990s, the novel explores themes of friendship, mental health, trauma, love, and self-discovery as Charlie navigates the complexities of adolescence. Story Structure 1. Beginning/Exposition Introduction of Characters: • Charlie: The protagonist, a shy and introspective teenager who struggles with the loss of his best friend to suicide and unresolved trauma from his childhood. • Sam: A free-spirited senior who becomes Charlie’s close friend and love interest. • Patrick: Sam’s stepbrother, a charismatic and openly gay senior who also befriends Charlie. • Bill Anderson: Charlie’s English teacher, who encourages his love for literature and critical thinking by assigning him extra books to read. • Charlie’s Family: Includes his emotionally distant parents, an older brother who is a college football player, and a sister dealing with an abusive relationship. Introduction to Charlie’s Life: The novel begins with Charlie writing letters to an unnamed recipient, recounting his struggles with starting high school after his best friend, Michael, died by suicide. Charlie feels like an outsider but yearns for connection. He is highly observant but socially awkward, earning him the label of a “wallflower.” 2. Inciting Incident Meeting Sam and Patrick: One pivotal evening at a football game, Charlie meets Sam and Patrick, two seniors who immediately welcome him into their group of friends. Their warmth and acceptance mark the beginning of Charlie’s transformation. • The Secret Santa Party: Shortly after, Charlie attends a party where he tries marijuana for the first time and witnesses his new friends’ complicated lives. At the party, Patrick jokingly calls him a “wallflower,” meaning he observes life deeply without actively participating. 3. Rising Action • Friendship and Love: Charlie becomes close with Sam and Patrick, attending parties, discovering music, and learning about relationships. He develops a deep, unspoken love for Sam, who is in a complicated relationship with an older man. • Patrick’s Struggles: Patrick secretly dates Brad, a closeted football player, but their relationship falls apart when Brad’s father discovers the truth. Patrick leans on Charlie for support. • Charlie’s Personal Challenges: As Charlie becomes more involved with his friends, his own emotional struggles surface, including flashbacks to childhood trauma involving his Aunt Helen, who died in a car accident. • Sam’s Guidance: Sam helps Charlie understand the importance of living in the moment, urging him to “participate” in life. 4. Climax Charlie confronts the depth of his suppressed trauma. After Sam leaves for college, Charlie has a mental breakdown and is hospitalized. This moment forces him to confront the abuse he endured as a child and begin the process of healing. 5. Resolution Charlie writes his final letter, expressing hope and gratitude for the people who have supported him. He decides to stop writing and instead focus on “participating” in his own life. The novel ends with Charlie feeling hopeful about his future, surrounded by friends and family who care for him. Themes and Analysis 1. Identity and Belonging: The novel explores the universal teenage desire to find one’s place in the world. Charlie’s journey illustrates the importance of friendship and self-acceptance. 2. Mental Health and Healing: Charlie’s struggles with trauma and depression highlight the importance of seeking help and confronting painful experiences to heal. 3. Friendship and Love: Through his relationships with Sam and Patrick, Charlie learns about unconditional friendship and the complexities of love, both platonic and romantic. 4. Coming of Age: The novel captures the joys and challenges of growing up, including moments of self-discovery, rebellion, and learning to embrace life. Why the Title? The title The Perks of Being a Wallflower reflects Charlie’s unique perspective as an observant outsider. While being a “wallflower” can seem isolating, it also gives him the ability to notice and appreciate things others overlook. Takeaways • Empathy: The novel emphasizes understanding the struggles of others and the importance of kindness. • Resilience: Despite his hardships, Charlie demonstrates the ability to heal and grow with the support of his friends. • Living Fully: Through Sam’s advice, the story encourages readers to actively participate in life rather than merely observing it. Legacy and Impact • The Perks of Being a Wallflower became a modern classic for its candid portrayal of mental health, adolescence, and self-discovery. • It was adapted into a critically acclaimed film in 2012, directed by Stephen Chbosky, starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller.

0:34 I really cannot believe what I am seeing. Some intern had to photoshop a black man into a diaper dragging a big rock by chain through a cotton field. Is the next video going to have him in minstrel's attire eating a big slice of watermelon? Do better, these are videos for children.

I had to do this for my class. As soon as i opened the video, i realized what i have driven myself into. 3 minutes and 30 seconds of pure child torture. I was thinking, “is this really worse than KSI’s new music video? It cant be right?” Boy was I wrong. Im just trying to enjoy my freshman year of high school but this video just ruined my day and my entire year. Next thing you know, im going to have to go to a mental hospital to get this erased from my mind. The sound effects, the faces, the voices. OH THE VOICES OUT OF MY HEAD. I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE FOR I AM GOING INSANE.

Crap. It’s him saying that Hamlet has just been sentenced to banishment as a danger to the state. My being (seemingly )caught out is Hamlet’s death sentence. For THIS he dies? Oh MY offence is far worse. Justice is a joke.
