Mavers. Coulda Shoulda Woulda ... Been one of the biggest "rockstars" ... Musical genius for sure but as said ... The line between that and madness a thin one.

ToneGarvey! Do you have the full live concert video of The La's at the Town And Country Club in London, 1989? It use to be on KZbin, but seems to be scrubbed off the internet! You're the only one I know that would be able to find it, and Im dying to find it. I hope you never stop posting, Brother!

Is it the same gig when Paul Hemmings said at interview for In Search of The La’s “one night we played a gig at Everyman in town and I remember that it was packed, totally packed out with record company people. That was the night we met Andy MacDonald.”?

Lee was real troubadour and a true band leader. His rhythm playing was phenomenal and the band was so tight because of it. Just watch him playing 'Son of a Gun' on stage - look at that right going like the clappers! And John's voice is the perfect complement to Lee's. They were conduits for musical magic and it's such a shame that we never got to hear more of it. Rumor has it that Lee's been trying to perfect that first album ever since, just like Brian Wilson's still trying to perfect 'Good Vibrations'.

Fuckin John 1 year before this had never even played bass. Then that genius of adding the double chorus, staggered half beat creates the imagery of a jack in the box being knocked down. Thats incredible.

Was just reading that Mavers recorded some stuff in a studio in London in 96, has anything ever leaked out from this and does anyone know if he was recording the same songs off the kitchen/crescent tapes?

I love that period, so fascinating. It was recorded, Edgar Summertyme described it as "raw, riddled with feedback, couldn't go out on a modern label". Nothing has come out from there, though it does exist. I don't think it was productive, Edgar also says the flavour of it was loops and bars, not necessarily full songs. Band was Lee, Neil, Joyce and Edgar. Rat Scabies owned the Kew studio, it eventually got waterlogged being on the banks of the Thames. He had a diary online at some point describing Lee kicking a football around in the street between recording with the lads...

What a maverick, he could have been living in mansion like Noel with millions in the bank. The La's could have been huge and may have made it in America unlike Oasis. Respect for his integrity and principles, there's few that would do the same. But it's a pity that his many songs haven't been recorded in a studio for posterity.
