My earliest memories of "You'll Never Walk Alone" are from the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, where it was his finale every year, sung with such deep emotion ... after adopting Madison as my FAVORITE drum corps while viewing the 1980 PBS broadcast, it was pure synchronicity when I found out the corps song ... THEN, after adopting Liverpool FC as my favorite Premier League side (because I am a life long Beatles fan), I find out that it is the Liverpool anthem ... signs from above that I picked the right corps and the right team ... So -- when I taught marching to the Lejeune HS band at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune NC from 2002-2005, what else could I do but convince the band director that THIS JUST HAD TO become the song for the band (if only because Lejeune HS is known as the Devilpups, as offspring of United States Marines aka Devil Dogs [Teufel Hunden], a mascot completely unique in all of the world -- so once a Devilpup, Always a Devilpup) -- I also did it because one of my best friends in the world marched in the 1975 Madison Scouts snare line, and I figured that he would totally get it ... So, I taught the Lejeune HS band students to sing the song, and made sure to have the guys in the band do the 4-note descent in the final chord ... I hope it made an impact on those students (now all in their 30s) as much as it impacted me each time I found another connection ... Thank you for indulging my memories.

Thank you for posting oh, very well said. I've been any activity since 1956 as a snare drummer. My first Chrome instructors were from what point when I was a kid that at Mount Saint Joseph Military Academy. I started competing with, olph Ridge men, from Brooklyn New York, 1956 through 1959, then I went to the Floyd Bennett golden eagles from Brooklyn New York 1960 and 1961, 1964 through 1968 oh, I was a member of the Long Island Sunrisers. After a 18 and a half hour spine surgery, I moved to Florida, 1992, co-founded, American Spirit senior alumni from and bugle Corps, along with John Dowling, one of the greatest growing strucker's ever any activity, he is a person that developed back sticking oh, we became very good friends. He is the only person that ever won four national championships in a single day, at the same contest, individual snare drum, drum quartet,, individual solo soprano, and Brass quartet. He was instructor for the United States Air Force drum and bugle Corps. He learned to play bugle his brother was a trumpet player for many years and also in a junior Drum Corps that's how we learned not only the plan with the right music extremely talented, may he rest in peace. He was drama instructor for several Junior national championship course over the years as well as a drum judge. Just thought I would share. Today is August 31st 2023.

This is such a great story. As a Southwest Onslow graduate, thank you for passing on great band traditions. Some of my favorite memories were at the Lejeune football games on base or when your band came to visit us. Your band director was one of the biggest voices in the local band community. Met him a few times. Even though I’ve moved away to the Midwest, Onslow County Bands really stuck together. They even started an Onslow County Band Classic before the marching band season officially kicks off to help the kids get better on their shows still to this day. I hope that makes you proud all these years later. I’ve made so many friendships from those area high schools I will cherish forever. We truly will never walk alone. There is a part of me that TRULY believes that the 1988 season is what "ticked off" DCI against the Scouts (as well as the Scouts' continued "WOW THE CROWD" philosophy, as opposed to kowtow to the judges) -- Madison goes to Europe, doesn't participate in the "regular" DCI season, then burns down Arrowhead with a scorched earth performance where the crowd reaction to the Scouts at DCI '88 Finals rivaled the volume of the crowd at a Chiefs game ... if the Scouts had not won that night, the crowd would have rioted and the judges would have been marked for death ... after that night in KC, DCI just. kept. THUMPING. on Madison, finally resulting in the Scouts dropping out of top 12 in 2002 while the host corps. All those years, DCI became seduced by all the BS spouted by the Allentown Predator (Corps = Band, etc.) but the crowds ALWAYS reacted to Madison, year after year after year after year, as the judges turned their backs on the Scouts ... NOW that SCV has gone inactive for 2023, I now wonder how long before DCI drops below a dozen active units (last year, DCA ginned up a three-class structure, with only four units per, because all-age corps is VERY slow to recover from the pandemic lockdowns) ... It is the treatment of the LAST TRUE DRUM CORPS by DCI and the sycophants of the Allentown Predator that caused me to break with DCI after my nephew's final season with Magic of Orlando in 2003 ... Nothing connected with DCI has seen any financial support from me since, and given that I see DCI as the summer extension of WGI, where visual spectacle gets the points, and aural output has become second-banana to the visual gymnastics (since any sound you want to produce can be electronically generated -- Bluecoats "bend", anyone?!?), until DCI figures out how to once again legitimately reward marching musical prowess (as opposed to some playing while not moving while everyone else scurries about while NOT playing), I will continue to eschew what the activity has become ... in fact, maybe it is time for DCI to truthfully rebrand as Bands of America-Independent World Class, since there is truly no difference in instrumentation between these units and the most highly-bankrolled scholastic bands within BOA ... If you have an issue with my opinion, just remember that is IS just that -- MY opinion, and only DCI might change it, if they can ... so please don't waste your time trying to proselytize or denigrate me ... just let me continue to watch these videos of the golden years of the Madison Scouts, and enjoy the PURE crowd reactions ...

Allentown predator lol. I shouldn’t laugh, but I’m laughing. It’s kind of ironic. The Bluecoats are definitely one of my favorite corps, but like you alluded to, they have either led or participated in DCI trends that I don’t like. I don’t like heavy use of electronics. I don’t like ridiculous props. I hate the evolution of uniforms: corps either changing classic looks (Cadets/Cavaliers) or wearing morph suit WGI uniforms like the Bluecoats and others. But above all, I HATE singing and narration in Drum Corps, with few exceptions. The Cadets and Bluecoats have done this a lot, unfortunately. One of the Bluecoats shows was basically a damn concert and I absolutely hated it!

I was wondering if the crowd was going to jump to their feet at the end, but they made it. You just can't help it with those horns giving it all they've got on the last notes. Those folks don't know how lucky they were to see that show in that moment in time. What a great championship show.

Scott, thank you for this. It's near and dear to my heart. I'm 50 now but in 1988 I tried out with many others for this show. With no dance training, decent rifle skills....I made the cut and learned saber and dance in one day. I was on the cover of the Flint Journal during try-outs. My beatiful rifle instructor Steve and best friend Cathy are highlighted in the show. Rural, white Michigan had a lot of fear back then and at the last minute my parents had me to quit. I was heartbroken. But because of you I can watch this a million times and see my friends and reminisce and show my children. (Karen and Nick were the most beautiful creatures I had seen at that age and Orlando laughed at me and called me a skunk at try-outs but I put on the thickest skin I ever had and made it!!) I can see MY SPOT open up in the drill at times lol... AND I can HEAR MYSELF CHEERING IN THE AUDIENCE AND still muscle memory remember the RIFLE AND SABRE ROUTINES! LOL...

I saw the Scouts at the finals in KC that year. It is still my favorite drum corps performance of all time. It's interesting to see the changes made in the show from this early season performance to the finals, especially in the color guard, and no cymbals framing the soloist in the closer. Everything about the 80's was awesome, especially drum corp. Will someone PLEASE build a time machine!

DAMN...I immigrated to the UK, live IN Warwickshire County (had a foot op in the Warwickshire Hospital lol), just a 20 minute drive to Warwick (pronounced War....ick) from Rugby BUT, sad thing is I didn't move here until Feb 2003 lol. I'm a huge Scout (I was even an Infantry Scout...Motorized as we used turret mounted M60s) fan, ever since my Marching Band...Drum Major days in HS and College in late 70s early 80s. I was a Scout when the Scouts were here lol. I'm considering joining a Corps here, in DCUK. The Kidsgrove Scouts (whom are damn good) will participate in the DCI Finals Competition in 2020! There is another but I forgot who that is....maybe Beeches. I remember our HS Marching Band playing Malaguena......we had several Trumpet players who loved Maynard Ferguson lol....fortunately! Nice to hear the Brits in attendance giving the Scouts much deserved love.
