I didn't know there were community orchestras. I played in a community band one summer (sax) which was nice because there was no audition, but we played a concert a week and changed half of what we played each week. It was like sight-reading as you're giving a concert! I'd love to find a community orchestra near me in northeastern Illinois.

Community orchestras were a great learning environment when I first picked up bass! Played in one for about two years and got lots of low-stress exposure to standard rep before I finally started getting calls for paying groups!

I played for 17 years in regional orchestras (Evansville Philharmonic, Baton Rouge Symphony) but nowadays I'm principal of community orchestras (Columbia Orchestra, Trinity Chamber Orchestra) and rely on my spouse's non-music job for our main source of income. Nice quick overview of the varying types, but where's the pick-up gig?
