All good Bryan. Old Kenwood is great. It's as you probably know the precursor to Accuphase. I got a KA6000. It's a great sounding amp. They went all out in this model. I agree that the KA2000 is good. The simpler the better in many ways. There is a lot of snobbery out there. I've heard some very pricey stuff to that I cannot afford but I'm good with what I have. Great videos mate.

I don't have the budget to be a snob. LOL! My old stuff I've had many years, and that I started in this hobby with almost a year ago, are pretty entry level. Before getting into vintage audio I never knew anything about them being low end, but they've always sounded so good to me. So I'm perfectly happy getting it restored, and buying other low end/low power, but **well designed** equipment. 😃

I have been trying to get one of these but haven't snagged one yet. I see a lot of KA-2002A models that look the same except they are all aluminum as far as I can see. Are they the same internally?
@acrossthedialКүн бұрын
The biggest difference is the pre-in and pre-out jacks were deleted on the later KA-2002A.

It certainly isn't a waste of your time in my opinion. They are fantastic after you restore them.

Hi Bryan. You are so right. I'm still enjoying my KT1000/TK-150U combination each of which you refurbed in the past. They bring me joy equal to any of the other rigs I have in my house. Let the snobs go hang with other snobs so we can keep these secrets to ourselves without driving prices sky-high. I really appreciate what you had to say about the landfill issue as well. Such a shame to rob future listeners of great audio experiences.

I think the correct value would be 1uF. Given what looks like a 56K load resistor right after it, and the very high input impedance of the tone control circuit that follows (caused by the negative feedback wrapped around the circuit), 10uF would give a low frequency F3 of about 0.3Hz, which is unnecessarily low. 1uF gives an F3 of about 3Hz, which is more reasonable. Also, the tone controls have a 1uF input cap. The schematic is a little out of focus, so I might be reading these values wrong. Oh, and they're not really forming a bipolar I don't think, because the cap in question is DC biased by the collector voltage and the 56K resistor.

I listened to the amp through the phono stage and can't hear a difference between the 2 caps although technically there is a difference.

It obviously passed quality control. And nobody noticed up till now. I mean I've had bad caps that the ESR meter couldn't even measure them. And the amplifier still worked. Actually sounded okay. Lol. Modern electronics are not not as forgiving.

They retailed for $129.95 in Australia and were often on special for $79.95. The big brother was the Minimus 22 but nothing ever came close to the fantastic T200 or Mach 1 speakers. Rdio Shack/Tandy audio products were always underrated except by leading hifi magazines that knew how good they really were.

Great video. Great camera I have one here in uk in the same condition. By the way Thorium wasn't added to Super Takumars until 1965/66 with the model 37800 50mm f1.4 - 7 element and the Model 37102 55mm f1.8. The lens issued with the S1a was either model 345-3 or 345-6 55mm f2.0 produced until late 1965. There are also 2 models of the S1a one with a Green letter R on rewind crank and the later one has a Red letter R on the rewind crank The latter one will accept the 50mm f1.4 Super Takumar but this lens will be damaged if used on the earlier Green R version. Mike.

I have the same pair. They are in perfect condition. I want to find one of the several receivers RS made that had a special EQ button on the back specifically for these speakers.

I was fortunate enough to run across a pair in the wood cabinets a couple of years ago. They were in a box in the back of a small thrift shop. Just about wet myself. Got both for $5. They are Japanese made. I'm not giving them up ever as they remind me when I use to lust after gear in the Radio Shack catalog, but didn't have a nickel to buy anything. I would go once a week to Radio shack and immerse myself in the sound and smells of brand-new electronics........The staff were always so nice and professional, even to my teenage self.

Saturday afternoons at Radio Shack. I remember one time just before Christmas early 80's buying some batteries (big spender) and the owner asked me to pick up a hotdog and drink for him because he was working alone and couldn't leave. I brought him his lunch and change from a $5-. He gave me a 3pack of blank cassettes for my errand. Wow!

Sweet , minimus 7 in walnut, the most desirable version. I have a pair still in service on a stepped ceiling and hang them as height speakers on the home theatre. The avr crosses them over internally at 80hz. They work great.

No you're right. Electrolytic capacitors has become expensive. Especially Nichicon and other good wellknown quality brands. I think a part of is because SMD components has taken over the market in new products, so sales is gone down for the "old" type components and then the price goes up. Last time i bought some electrolytic capacitors in good quality I was stunned by the price.

rant without the vitriol... I DO NOT shotgun units with caps. You test and assess. Save yourself some money. Parts are stupid expensive. I absolutely cannot tell the difference in quality of operation or fidelity after replacing a bunch of overpriced caps for NO REASON. You are actually molesting a unit by compromising discrete component values with whatever china crap you bought in bulk off Amazon. I see a lot of that now. Sometimes it's so bad, I just close the unit up and throw it in the parts box. Cheers.

"I DO NOT shotgun units with caps" - Agree, I use an ESR meter to determine good/bad caps instead of blindly carpet replacing. Lots of good units out there, some with 'auto-discharge' :ø)
@sdjgfashjasbfasd16 күн бұрын
When I started building tube amps I got into the habit of buying more parts than I needed at the time. Payed off as now the caps and transformers have gone way up in price. I still have a few Hammond transformer sets that are now double what I paid for them, and the Canadian dollar was much better then also. Antique Electronics has 15% of caps right now so maybe a good time to place an order. They won't be getting any cheaper, and that's if you can find them.

I just recently had my beloved little Pioneer SX-434 restored to spec by a local tech, and he was obligated to tell me that the cost will exceed the value. Yep, OK, thanks. But... 1) the cost only exceeds value if I sell it, otherwise it's just numbers on paper (my wife can sell my Pioneer at my estate sale), 2) it was given to me in 1979 so I only have the restoration cost into it, and 3) the little guys deserve some love too. Don't they? Now it's generally good to go for... how many more years? And isn't that worth something to me? (Spoiler alert: Yes, it is.) And it sounds so GOOD and is so much cheaper than the new stuff. I have 2 more little guys waiting - H/K 330B and Sansui 661, and they'll each get their turn.

Great points. HK-330B is a nice receiver, have one in my recroom.
@jeffbranch807216 күн бұрын
@@acrossthedial , I think of H/K as kind of the "engineer's stereo equipment" with their designs and some of the features. Who else put pre out/main in connections on a 20 Wpc receiver? Twin Power available in as low as 25 Wpc. Understated styling. And they didn't seem affected by the stereo wars, they just continued to sell a well designed, solid lineup.
@JonPaul16 күн бұрын
Your comments are spot on - if we were to "bell curve" the vintage audio repair efurb business, we're certainly past the top on value of repair efurb due to lack of techs and now those caps you're talking about - those are also becoming so much more expensive. Well done. I liked your intro as well.
